Comfort zones
Which of the following situations make
you feel comfortable? Which make you
feel uncomfortable? Why? Tell your
partner.
• being in an airplane
• being late to a party
• driving on a highway
• meeting new people
• riding an escalator or elevator
• speaking in public
• swimming in the ocean
• visiting other countries

READING
Conquering a fear
Read Marty’s story. What was his fear? How did he overcome it?
READING AND SPEAKING
“On the one hand” / “On the other hand”
Read about Jason’s lesson. Why does he
use “On the one hand” and “On the other
hand”? Choose the correct answer.

“I learned something useful from this. On the one

hand, it’s good to push yourself out of your
comfort zone. On the other hand, you don’t want
to push yourself too far. Take it slow! You might
surprise yourself.”

a. to compare two problems that he has

a. to list two reasons why he does something

a. to show two opposite ways of thinking

READING AND SPEAKING
“On the one hand” / “On the other hand”
Work with a partner. Make your own statements with
“On the one hand” and “On the other hand” to show
two different facts or thoughts. Then report on your
partner’s ideas to the class.
On the one hand, I like...
I enjoy seeing...
I’m afraid of...
I try to avoid...
On the other hand, I don’t like...
I hate seeing...
I’m not afraid of...
I can’t really avoid...

On the one hand, I like exercising in the

mornings. On the other hand, I don’t like
studying in the mornings.
SPEAKING TASK
Out of your comfort zone
Think about a time when you pushed
yourself out of your comfort zone. It can
be true, or you can make it up. Take notes.

1 What activity or event did you feel

uncomfortable doing? Why?
2 How did you try to overcome the challenge?
Did it work?
3 What did you learn about yourself from the
experience? Would you have done anything
differently?

A woman goes skydiving for the first time.

SPEAKING TASK
Out of your comfort zone
Work in small groups. Tell your story. Tell
each other how you would feel if you tried
doing each other’s activities.

I was pretty scared to go up in a small

plane like that. I never really liked
flying, and this time I wasn’t just on a
small plane. I was jumping out of one!

If I went skydiving, I would

be really frightened!

I wouldn’t be scared in the plane,

but I would be scared after I jumped!

A woman goes skydiving for the first time.
