Instructions
Step 1: Pass out Teengagement Aptitude Test.

Step 2: Instruct students to read each scenario and circle the letter of their response.

Step 3: Provide the students with a short mini-lesson on the five factions:
(If possible, use the website http://divergentthemovie.com/ to “show” the students what each faction is like.)

Dauntless
Candor (honest) (brave)

Abnegation Erudite

Amity (peaceful)

Step 4: Instruct students to work with a partner in order to label each of the options with a faction. They
should write the faction name in the box to the right of each option. Complete the first question together.
Students should read the scenarios again and then read each option, deciding which faction matches each
option.

Step 5: Share the answers to Step 4 with the students.

Step 6: Instruct students to fill out the chart that looks like this on the bottom of the last page of the test:
For administrative purposes: DO NOT COMPLETE THIS PORTION UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO!
When directed, write the number of responses you chose for each of the following factions:
_____ Candor (honest) _____ Dauntless (brave)
_____ Abnegation (selfless) _____ Erudite (intelligent)
_____ Amity (peaceful)

Based on the number of responses you chose for each faction, in which faction would you choose to

Teengagement Aptitude Test

1. You are sitting in a rapidly filling movie theater. An older gentleman and his
wife walk down the aisle. You notice that there aren’t two seats available
next to each other, but there is a single seat next to you. Which of the
following do you do?

A. Think to yourself, “They should have gotten here earlier. First come, first served.”

B. Stand up, unnoticed, and walk to the back of the theater, allowing the couple to
sit down.
C. Stand up and call attention to everyone, saying, "If it is possible for everyone to
scoot down a seat or two, please do so at this time so this lovely couple can sit
down together."
D. Wonder why this couple would want to see this movie and think that maybe it
isn't the best movie for them to see anyway.
E. Immediately jump up and offer them your seat, smiling and insisting that they
should sit together and it is not a bother for you to move to another seat.

2. You are walking down the street, and you see a man run in front of a car.
The driver slams on the brakes but can’t avoid him. Her car slightly hits his
side, knocking him to the street. He lies still for a second, but then tries to
stand up. What do you do?
A. You run to the scene and begin checking to see that everyone is okay. You ask
the man if he needs any ice or a drink of water. You give the driver a hug because
she looks pretty shaken up.
B. Stay back. You think the man shouldn't have been running across the street; plus
you just don't think it will matter if you don't get involved.
C. You observe the scene for a moment and then walk up to see if the man and
woman need any assistance.
D. You immediately run to the rescue, directing traffic around the man and
checking to see if he is okay.
E. You check out the scene. You don't want to rush into things too quickly. Once
you feel it is safe, you walk up to the scene and begin asking lots of questions.
3. You are spending the night at a hotel. Your room is on the 14th floor, and it
is 2:00 am when the fire alarm wakes you from a deep sleep. What do you
do?

A. You immediately rush to the stairs, passing anyone you can on the way. You feel
sorry for the people who are slower, but you believe that you shouldn't suffer
just because they can’t keep up.
B. You head toward the stairwell, checking all of the doors for heat before you open
them. Before stepping into the stairwell, you check to see that things are safe.
Then you begin your descent, constantly working on a back-up plan in the event
the stairwell becomes blocked.
C. You walk into the stairs, smiling at everyone and encouraging them as you go.
The happier you can keep everyone, you think, the better things will turn out.
D. You jump into the stairwell and go up to the top floor, checking to see if anyone
else needs help. You stop at each floor and check to see if anyone needs to be
carried to the bottom. Things like this do not scare you.
E. You make your way cautiously down the stairs, attempting to help anyone who
may need assistance along the way.

4. You wake up one night to the sound of whirring noises and flashing lights.
A voice says, “Open your hand!” You do so. Then it commands, “Imagine a
device, and it will appear in your hand.” You have no idea what is going on,
but you think that you may be in danger. What do you picture?
A. A bag full of supplies such as water, apples, matches, and fishhooks that you can
use and give out to other people in the event of emergencies.

B. A bouquet of flowers to use as an offering in any dangerous circumstances.

C. An information device that includes survival techniques in any environment and

a translator for any language.
D. A syringe filled with serum that will make those injected with it tell the truth so
that you can find the "voice" and determine what is going on.

E. A tool that has several sharp devices that can be used as weapons.
5. You are sitting with five people in a small boat in the ocean. Land is not in
sight. A heavy rock drops out of the sky and crashes through the bottom of
your boat. The boat begins to sink slowly. There are two life jackets on board.
What do you do?
A. You see that there is one other girl who looks to be in incredible shape. You say,
"She and I are going to begin swimming to look for help. You people decide who
gets the life jackets. We don't care. We will swim as long as we can until we can
find someone to rescue you all. Don't worry. Everything is going to be okay!"

B. You realize there are two people who don't look very strong. You say, "These two
shall be allowed to have the life jackets. The rest of us can form a chain of bodies
and try to keep each other afloat until help arrives.”

C. You know that chances are slim that you will survive. But that doesn't upset you.
You say, "Let's let the two youngest people have the life jackets. They have the
most to live for. Let's form a circle and hook onto each other in the water. We
should sing songs to keep us uplifted and happy. There is no sense suffering as
this happens. Let's keep up hope!"
D. You look at the life jackets. You wonder if you could figure out how to break
boards off the boat and attach them to the two life jackets, making a small
device that can float, allowing everyone to hold on and keep their heads above
water. "I've thought it through," you say. "Everyone help me bust boards off the
boat so we can make a craft that floats. We can do this!”
E. You look at everyone and determine that you and one other man look healthy
enough to survive floating in the ocean until rescue arrives. You say, "There is no
way anyone other than that man and I would survive. I'm sorry, but this is the
truth. So he and I should be allowed to have the life jackets."

6. A man is walking you through a long corridor. You are carrying a large
notebook and are dressed in a school uniform. The man says, “You are now
at The Education Institution. You will be allowed two minutes to choose the
classroom you would like to enter. When you make that choice, you will be
expected to be educated in that field. You will live out your life productively,
using that skill to help our citizens.” Which classroom do you choose?
A. Law

B. Charitable Organizations and Social Services

C. Military

D. Engineering

E. Public Parks, Recreation, and Civil Beautification

7. You are walking through a dark and creepy forest. Vines curl down
menacingly from burnt trees. Crows angrily scream at you from the
treetops. Then you hear crying. You look back and see two small boys crying.
You ask them what is wrong, and they say, “We have lost our puppy. Can
you help us?” What do you do?
A. Say, "Let's find a safe place, first. I will help you find your dog, but we have to
make sure you two stay safe first."
B. Say, "No way. I'm out of here. You shouldn't have been out here walking in this
forest with your puppy, anyway. That puppy isn't worth losing my life."
C. You say nothing. You look at the boys and think they might be suspicious looking
themselves. You weigh your options. If you say, "No," you may have lost some
friends who could tell you how to get out of the forest. However, if you say, "Yes,"
you may be falling into a trap. These boys may be bad guys. But they could be
good. After thinking over all of the possibilities, you decide to help them.
D. You cry out, "Of course, little guys! Here, hold my hands. Stop crying, be happy!
We'll find that puppy together!"
E. Say, "Absolutely! Let's find that dog! Pick up the biggest and sharpest stick you
can find so if we encounter any monsters along the way, we can show them who
is boss!"
