You may do this activity like a play. Ask a few students to act
as the hosts and a few students to act as the guests. The guests
must tell the hosts what they do/do not eat. The hosts must
try to help their guests and serve food which they would like
to eat.
Let’s Listen
Read out the sentences to the class. Ask them to pay attention
to the different food-related words.
• Vegetarian – A vegetarian is a person who does not eat
meat or fish, they eat mostly grains, vegetables and fruits.
• Non-vegetarian – A person who eats meat and fish along
with other vegetarian items is a non-vegetarian.
• Dessert – A sweet dish usually eaten at the end of a meal
is called a dessert. Jalebis, custard and cake are examples
of desserts.
• Spicy food – Some foods are hot or spicy. They are not
‘plain’ or ‘bland’. They may make our tongue feel like it is
on fire. Some spicy foods are peppers and chillies.
• Salads – Usually eaten at the start of a meal, a salad is a
mix of fresh vegetables (and sometimes meat) eaten with
a sauce called as dressing. The ingredients are cut into
small pieces and tossed together. It is usually a cold dish.
• Soups – Soup is a liquid (watery) or creamy dish. It usually
has many vegetables and meat cooked in water for a long
time to make it soft. Soup is usually eaten before the main
dish.
• Lentils – Lentils are pulses. They can be cooked with water
or made into a dish. Dals and chickpeas are examples of
lentils.

• Green, leafy vegetables – Vegetables whose leaves are
green in colour are good for us. They keep us healthy
because they are full of nutrients. Spinach, cabbage and
