3.3. Role of inter-electrode gap size

In ECD, the distance between elctordes affects the machining


speed and should have stable equilibrium machining gap by the
electrochemical effect. The equilibrium gap increases as the input
voltage increases and decreases exponentially as the feeding speed
of the electrode increases [23]. It is enviable to keep the IEG as
small as possible as it reduces the loss of parent material and
deburring time [21]. But, when the gap is extremely small, short
circuit will occasionally halt the process and destroy the adjacent
surface [20,30]. An increase of the IEG causes a decrease of the
machining current due to the increase of the gap resistance. This
leads to decrease of the deburred radius and lower productivity
[31]. A non-uniform machining gap likely to change the hydrody-
namic conditions of the mixture and thereby results in uneven
depth and width in the workpiece edge [15,22].

6. Process capabilities and limitations
