FAIRY TALES
Fairies’ stories or as they are more commonly known, fairy tales, are short stories,
set in the distant past, depicting events that would not be possible in the real world.
Traditional fairy tales are a subcategory or folk tales which include fables and
legends.

Definition
According to the Oxford Companion to Children’s literature (Hahn, 2015), fairy tales
are “wonder” stories, characterized by magical occurrences, where hero/heroines
2 are mortal. Magical creatures like dwarfs, giants, witches and ogres make up the
dramatis personae.

Although fairy tales and the oral traditions that existed before then have evolved
through the centuries from culture to culture, the “Golden age” of folk and fairy tales
spanned a century from 1812 to 1912. Before then, in the seventeenth century, the
term contes des fees was coined in France to describe such stories. But it was
during the 19th century that European scholars like Charles Perault, Hans Christian
Anderson and the Brothers Grimm, who began collecting and cataloging folk tales
from various cultures around the world, writing them down and publishing them so
that these stories would not die out (Zipes, 2013).

The Importance of Fairy Tales

Fairy tales are important because they spark the imagination. They give us an outlet
for experiencing things in our minds before we experience them in the real world. It is
where the troubles of the real world can meet the supernatural and mix things up. In
a fairy tale anything can happen and any kind of creature can exist, and when
anything can happen, we can find solutions to things in our real lives. Through
imagination, we learn about our world. We can explore outcomes and possibilities.

Examples of Fairy Tales in Popular Culture

We can find fairy tales in every element of our culture. They are, in many ways,
given life through popular culture. They appear in books, movies, music, and art. As
the fairy tale is such a creative art-form, itself, it is understandable that it would
appear in all creative mediums. With each new interpretation or retelling of a fairy
tale, we learn a little bit about the story-teller, the audience, the culture and the time
in which it is told.
Probably the most recognizable producer of fairy tales in our culture is Walt Disney.
Disney has turned the fairy tale into an industry, producing movies, books, toys,
clothing, and just about anything else you can think of and branding them with fairy
tale characters.
Stories such as Cinderella, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Jack and the
Beanstalk are all traditional stories.

Indian Folktales
The folklores and folktales have been an eternal part of every culture since ages.
When it comes to Indian folk tales, the country of diverse religions, languages and
cultures has a complete range of tales and short stories. Indian folklore has a wide
range of stories and mythological legends, which emerge from all walks of life.
3 Being full of moralistic values, Indian folklore makes perfect stories for children, who
are required to be, instilled with right values. All these ancient stories have been
passed from generation to generation, creating bondage of traditional values with
present-day generation.
