EXERCISE 1

a. Ray uses the word hi to address his mother, while Ray addresses the principal using the word
good afternoon. Ray refers to his mother as mum, while referring to the principal as sir. Ray uses
two different words because he is closer to his mother, and there is no need to speak formally
to her, whereas he speaks formally to the principal because that is how it should be.
b. The use of greeting words is of course different depending on the object used, if to address the
principal, of course using words that are more formal than addressing mom and dad or close
friends.
c. It's not that Ray is unloving, he's just annoyed that he can't get home on time, which is why he
calls his principal "Sootbucket".

EXERCISE 4

a. Vocabulary choices : Tender / give, exact / right, state / tell, destination / where you’re going.

The varitiation is syntax, because both sentences use imperative structures.

b. different ways of conveying the expression. Sentences a and c are more formal and polite. While
sentences b and d are more informal and casual.
