1 INRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction
The proposed Radar Station is one of the structures to be put up under the project of
“Proposed Coastal Defence System”. The Radar Station is to be built in Ndekye,
Rubirizi District.
The Radar station comprises of the Radar Tower, Radar building and the Genset
canopy. The Radar Tower and the Genset Canopy are steel frame structures with
reinforced concrete foundation while the radar building is reinforced concrete frames
building.
All the structures are designed to absorb both the vertical and lateral loads. The
gravity loads are the dead loads and the imposed live loads while the lateral loads
are the Notional, Wind and Earthquake loads.
The radar tower foundation was designed based on the structural layout provided by
the client. The genset canopy and the radar building were designed based on the
specifications provided in the statement of works (SOW).
The structures have been designed based on Eurocodes with a design life of 50 years
with minimum maintenance such as painting but not structural distress. The design
was carried out in reference to the design information outlined in the subsequent
chapters.
Hence, this report outlines the detailed structural design for the Ndekye Radar Station
(Radar building, Radar tower foundation and Genset Canopy).
The topographic survey is therefore used in the preparation of detailed drainage and
other civil works designs.
RSV Engineering Group Ltd was contracted to carry out geotechnical investigation
for the Proposed Radar Station at Ndekye in Rubirizi District.
The primary purpose of this study was to determine the stratigraphic characteristics
or geotechnical design parameters of the site based on field and laboratory tests. The
specific objectives were to:
The results from the geotechnical investigation were used to analyse and design the
foundation of the structure accordingly.
3 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
3.1 Introduction
A linear elastic finite element 3-D model was used to conduct the modal analysis of
the single storey building, as a space structure. Figure 3-1 and 3-2 represents the
finite element model set up for the complete typical floors for the structure as well as
the 3D structural model for the whole structure. The building was also analysed to
resist Earthquake lateral force and vertical gravity dead and imposed loadings. The
structure was modelled, analysed and designed using finite element analysis
software (ProtaStructure ®2018) from which beams, slabs, foundations and columns
were designed. Analysis results are in Appendices 5.1.1 and 5.1.2.
Figure 3-1: Structural Model – Radar building Roof slab Plan View
The structure was subjected to the following loads (Design information: section 3.2
Table 1):
A linear elastic finite element 3-D model was used to conduct the modal analysis of
the radar tower by AFI. Figure 3-3 represents the finite element model set up for the
complete 3D structural model for the radar tower. The radar tower was also analysed
to resist Earthquake and Wind lateral forces and vertical gravity dead and imposed
loadings. The radar tower was modelled and analysed using finite element analysis
software (Robot®2018). The results from the analysis were used to design the
foundations of the tower using finite element analysis and design software (Safe
2016). Analysis results are in Appendix 5.2.1.
A linear elastic finite element 2-D model was used to conduct the modal analysis of
the Genset Canopy, as a framed structure. Figure 3-4 represents the finite element
model set up for the complete 2D structural model for the Genset Canopy. The
Genset canopy was also analysed to resist Earthquake and Wind lateral forces and
vertical gravity dead and imposed loadings. The Genset canopy was modelled,
analysed and designed using finite element analysis software (Prokon ®2.4) from
which the structural steel members, steel connections and foundations were
designed. Analysis results are in Appendix 5.3.1.
Table 1 below indicates the design data used in the design of the radar building,
Radar tower foundation and Genset canopy. The information was fed in the modelling,
analysis and design software (Protastructure ®2018 and Prokon ® 2.4).

Table 2 Design load for the Radar tower foundation
An In-situ Reinforced Concrete Moment Frame system has been used for the
structure. The reinforced concrete frame comprises ground support RC slab and one-
way and two-way spanning solid roof slabs (150mm thick), supported on beams. The
beams are supported on columns. The reinforced concrete beams are typically
200mm wide by 500mm deep. The R.C column are 300mm by 300mm in section.
A steel Frame system has been used for the structure. The steel frame comprises
horizontal and diagonal bracings, universal I beams and Columns. The RC raft
foundation is 9m by 9m and 600mm thick.
A steel Portal Frame system has been used for the structure. The steel portal frame
comprises ground support RC slab, universal I beams (eaves beam), rafters, and
Columns. The purlins are Z-purlins. The eaves beams are IPE100A, the rafters being
IPE100, the columns are IPE 160 and purlins are Z-100x50x20x2mm thick. The RC
Isolated foundation is 1.2m by 1.2m and 300mm thick.
The structures (Radar building, Radar tower and Genset Canopy) comprise of an
in-situ reinforced concrete frame and steel frame. Destabilizing forces are likely to
arise from mainly lateral earthquake loading, wind loading and under gravity loading
(dead and Imposed loads) and the design has taken care of this.
All continuous vertical deflections have designed and checked against the following
limits:
Appendix 6.2 indicates that the horizontal drifts of the designed frame are within
acceptable limits below:
4 STRUCTURAL DESIGN
4.1 Introduction
The Radar building, Radar tower and Genset canopy were designed to resist the loads
regimes.
From the analysis, the structural elements (Slab, beams, columns and the foundations)
designed.
The reinforced concrete columns were designed as shown in Appendix 5.1.4. This
included the design of Column C1.
The reinforced concrete beams were designed as shown in Appendix 5.1.5. This
included the design of all the floor beams and roof slab beams.
4.2.4 Slab Design
The slabs were designed as shown in Appendix 5.1.6. The slabs are 150mm thick.
From the analysis, the structural elements (beams, columns, Connections and the
foundations) designed.

Notes and Assumptions
1 All bolt holes are assumed to be normal clearance holes.
2 All bolts are assumed to have threads in their shear planes.
3 It is assumed that the connection is deep enough for the flanges
to resist the compressive and tensile forces in them.
4 It is assumed that compressive forces in flanges and stiffeners
are conveyed through welds and not through bearing.
5 Axial force in the column is not considered in the design.

Fmax = 27.682 kN
The resistance is the smaller of the 3 possible failure modes :
4 . Mpl .
R1 = 1000

2 . Mpl . 1000 + n . 2 . Bt
R2 =
m+n
2 ×0.17 ×1000 + 18.7 ×2 ×24.278
=
21 + 18.7
= 31.436 kN
R3 = 2 . Bt
