College of Business & Hospitality Management

Department of Business Administration & Hospitality Management
ENTR 480: Entrepreneurship Field Studies – 3 Credits
Course Syllabus

WHAT IS BUSINESS PRACTICUM?

Basically, the internship has two objectives: to give the student the opportunity to have a
meaningful work experience that is directly or indirectly related to his or her particular academic
studies and, in addition, to enable the student to test his or her ability to successfully operate a
business. Briefly, then, it is a work-study experience, which combines a job and academic project
in a unique learning situation.

HOW IS BUSINESS PRACTICUM ORGANISED?

The internship is designed by the Career Services, the faculty adviser, the student, and a
representative of the sponsoring agency or organization, (who is called the on-site supervisor).

HOW LONG DOES THE BUSINESS PRACTICUM LAST?

Normally, an internship is for one semester or and can be for 12 to 15 weeks. An internship may
also occur throughout the summer months.

PRACTICUM? HOW MUCH TIME DOES A STUDENT SPEND ON BUSINESS?

Because interns are often taking regular courses in addition to their internships, actual working
hours are usually limited, the amount of time spent on the internships will vary according to the
amount of academic credit accorded, as well as the nature of the work involved. Work schedules
will also vary according to the needs of the sponsoring agency.
HOW MUCH CREDIT CAN A STUDENT RECEIVE FOR BUSINESS PRACTICUM?

Students normally work 8-10 hours per week on the job for 3 credits. It should be noted that
credit is granted primarily for the academic projects, not for the work experience alone. Also, the
internship is graded on a letter basis by the faculty internship advisor.

WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE STUDENT INTERN?

Before the internship begins, the student must submit the Internship Agreement Form, obtained
from the Internship Office. This is a contract to be completed by the intern, the faculty internship
adviser, and the on-site supervisor. The student is required to state his or her educational
objectives and to submit a reading list as part of the agreement form. In addition, the intern will
consult with the faculty internship adviser and the on-site supervisor to establish the duties,
responsibilities, and goals of the internship. The Internship Agreement thus completed must be
submitted for approval to the Chair of the Department, all proposals must be approved by the
Chair in order to be eligible for credit.
WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ON-SITE SUPERVISION?
The on-site supervisor oversees the activities and work projects of the intern as these have been
established and organized by him or her through consultation with the intern and faculty
internship adviser. Changes may occur in the work of the internship as it progresses. Ideally the
on-site supervisor assigns a variety of tasks for the broadest possible exposure to the supervising
organisation.

The most successful internships are usually those in which the supervisor and intern meet often
(or regularly) to discuss the intern’s experiences and any questions the latter may have.

A mid-semester review, conducted by the faculty internship adviser, will require consultation
with the on-site supervisor.

Finally, the supervisor will provide a final written evaluation at the completion of the internship.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE FACULTY INTERNSHIP ADVISER?

In completing the Internship Agreement Form, the faculty internship adviser describes the
criteria for evaluation and the academic activities, which the student will be expected to perform
in order to receive credit.

The academic projects are assigned by the faculty internship adviser. This may include written
and oral reports, discussions of readings, and/or development of a journal or portfolio. The
adviser’s main task is to assign projects that will encourage the student to reflect on the
internship as it progresses and to test the work done against course study and learning. For
example, students might be asked to consider such questions as: How does your internship
experience relate to or affect your knowledge as developed through your reading and classroom
discussion? What are your attitudes towards decision-making, work consideration and the role
of personality in tasks performance? What understanding of yours has been confirmed or
disproved? What things would you do differently and why?

As the internship begins, it is helpful if the faculty internship advisor establishes a contact with
the on-site supervisor through a brief letter or phone call. At that time a tentative date for a mid-
semester visit can be arranged. Although an on-site visit is not required, many advisers have
found it useful.

During the internship the faculty internship advisor should keep in touch with the intern through
internship reports, regular meetings, or telephone call if the internship is some distance away.
Most students say they like to meet with their advisor often, in order to let them know how their
internship is developing.
The faculty internship advisor also plays an important role throughout the internship by being
supportive when the intern may encounter difficulties or roadblocks along the way, by
encouraging the intern to be adaptable and responsible. Frequently, it is a matter of pointing out
advantages that may accrue in taking the initiative when an opportunity arises, and when the
internship allows, as often is the case, a certain amount of freedom for the intern to develop and
carry out projects or activities on their own.
