3.2. Representative nature of Christ's death: Is.53:3-6: 2 Cor.5:14, 21.

One has died for ALL; so we ALL have died. He died specifically for us.

3.3. Substitution: I Jn3: 16; Eph.5:2.

Christ died ON BEHALF of us; so WE NEED NOT die. Sinner must die, Christ died
instead. It shows man's inability to deal with sin.

4.0.0 Salvation in Three tenses:

A Sinner was saved from the Penalty of Sins

A Sinner is being saved from the Power of Sin

A Sinner will be saved from the Presence of Sin

The Need for Salvation: It is because of one element called ‘Sin’. If man were holy, he would not
need salvation.

5.0.0 Who needs Salvation? Sinners! Since all have sinned, all human beings need salvation. Living
selfishly is our natural, personal and deliberate choice. (Prov. 20:9; Eccl. 7:20; Is. 53:6; Rom. 3:12,
23; Js. 2:10; 1 Jn. 1:10).

5.1.0 The Condition of the Sinner: The sinner is described by God as wicked, deceitful, ungodly, an
enemy and an evildoer. He is cut off from God and dead in transgressions and sins. He is bound for
everlasting ruin and destruction in Hell as punishment for his sin. (Ps. 11:5-6; Jer. 17:9; Mt. 25:41, 46;
Rom. 3:10-20; 5:10; 6:23; Eph. 2:1, 3)

5.2.0 Man’s utter helplessness: Not only are we sunk in ruin, misery and shame, we are also utterly
unable to do anything about it. We are ungodly and totally powerless to rectify our condition
(Jer.13:23; Jn. 3:6; Rom. 5:6). Our ‘good works’ and ‘righteousness’ can never measure up to God’s
standard of absolute holiness in thought, word and deed (Is. 64:6). If we get what we deserve, it would
be an eternity in Hell. God must intervene if man is to be saved from eternal damnation.

5.3.0 The Situation before God: God is Holy. Therefore, He must punish sin and the guilty one.
(Is. 13:11; Nah. 1:3)God is Love. Therefore, He longs to show mercy to the sinner. (Ps. 103:8;
Ezek.18:32; 2 Pet. 3:9).

Holy God: The sinner must be punished

Loving God: The sinner must be saved. God needs a solution that satisfies both His holiness and His
love.

5.4.0 The Solution: God has made a way. It is through ‘Substitution’: A Substitute dies for man, thus
paying the penalty for his sins as well as being able to allow the guilty one to go free!

5.4.1 Who can be a Substitute?

A Man is needed. The Substitute must be of the same kind because it is human beings who
have sinned. (Heb. 2:14-18).
A Sinless Man is needed. A sinner cannot die for another sinner. Therefore, we need a
person who has satisfied the requirements of the Law in absolute obedience. (Ex. 12:5; Lev.
22:20).
An Infinite Man is needed. One sinless man can die only for one sinner. We need a person
who can die for all mankind and die for all time. Only God can fit this description or fulfill
this requirement.
A Substitute whose blood can be shed is needed, for blood symbolizes life. Only when blood
has been shed does death take place and forgiveness occurs (Lev. 17:11; Heb. 9:22).
A Willing Substitute is needed.

5.4.2 The glorious news of the Gospel is that such a Substitute has been provided. The Lord Jesus
Christ is God’s Substitute for us!

 He is a Man (Jn. 1:14; Rom. 8:3; Phil. 2:7b).

 He is absolutely Sinless and totally fulfilled the Law’s demands (Jn. 8:46; Heb. 4:15; 1 Pet.
1:19).
 He is infinite because He is God. He is fully-Human and fully-Divine. He has secured an
Eternal Redemption (Jn. 1:1; Rom. 9:5; Col. 2:9; Heb. 9:12, 14).
 He shed His blood (Jn. 19:34; Col. 1:20; 1 Pet. 1:18-19).
 He was a Willing Substitute (Lk. 22:42; Phil. 2:5-8).

The Substitutionary death of Jesus Christ is the most important and significant event in all history. It
is the point where two eras meet: one that ‘looked forward’ to it and another that ‘looks back’ upon
it. •Christ foretold as the Sinner’s Substitute throughout the Old Testament Scriptures; the
Substitutionary death of Christ was anticipated by ‘types and shadows’ and also by ‘direct prophetic
statements’.
