THE GOSPEL OF DOMINION AND LIFTING UP

Text: Genesis 1: 26 – 28

Memory verse: Genesis 1: 28

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the
earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the
air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Introduction

From our memory verse above, we can see that the mind of God for mankind is to have
dominion, over all other creatures. Dominion simply means :

1. Sovereign or supreme authority; the power of governing and controlling.

2. Power to direct, control, use and dispose of at pleasure.

Right of possession and use without being accountable; as the private dominion of
individuals.

From the above meanings, we can deduce that God has given man the supreme authority to
be the governor and controller of all His creations right from the beginning of the world.
But it is a known fact that majority of the people don’t exercise this God-given authority
these days. This is the concern of this bible study.

A. Man Given Dominion

Genesis 1: 26 – 28; Psalm 8: 4 - 8

God’s intention in His creation of man in His image and according to His likeness is that
man would express Him and represent Him; God gave man dominion to subdue God’s
enemy, Satan, who rebelled against God.

God created man so that man would look like God and have the capacity to contain God so
that he may express God.

B. Man Lost His Dominion by Sin

Genesis 3: 1 – 8, 15; Romans 4: 12 - 14

Unfortunately, the first man, Adam, failed and fell into sin and as a result of that the whole
human race lost this precious dominion and become slaves to Satan and sin.

God, however did not leave us in that hopeless condition but made arrangement of our
redemption through His Son, Christ Jesus.
C. Dominion Restored in Christ

Romans 8: 3 – 4; 4: 15 – 19; John 3: 16; 2Corinthians 5: 17

The Lord Jesus Christ came as a man, in the likeness of the flesh of sin, and He lived a
perfect human life on earth; on one hand He expressed God in His divine attributes through
His human virtues, and on the other hand, He represented God with His authority by
dealing with God’s enemy, Satan.

Through His death and resurrection, Jesus became a life-giving Spirit to as many as accept
Him as their Lord and personal Saviour. This gives us eternal life and makes us to become
new creation in Him. He has now restored our lost dominion and has given us the power
and authority to rule over the old things, like sin, Satan, sicknesses and diseases etc. that
used to have dominion over us.

D. We are Now Lifted Up With Christ

Ephesians 2: 1, 5 – 6; 1: 20.

When we accept the Lord Jesus into our lives as our Lord and Savior He translates us from
our downtrodden position of sin and lifts us up to sit with Him into the position of dominion
in the heavenly places. Our dominion, having been released from the grip of sin and Satan
is from heavenly where our Lord Jesus Christ is.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is essential for us to know and let others know that the dominion and our
position in Christ Jesus is part of the package of salvation and it is a good news to the
people to hear again.

Application

1. Jesus said “come unto me all ye that labor and area heavy laden I will give you
rest”……… Dominion is rest – Mathew 11:28.

2. Living in dominion and being dead to sinful nature is mutually exclusive.

3. Dominion is attainable to everyone as we can be positionally be where God desired

us to be in Christ Jesus.

4. We, can begin to appropriate the dominion in our life by taking control of situations
and circumstances around us.
