MAED TS 1

I. Write the formulas for compounds containing the following ions:

1. K+ and F- - KF
2. Ca2+ and Br- - CaBr2
3. Mg2+ and N3- - Mg3N2
4. Na+ and S2- - Na2S
5. Ba2+ and O2- - BaO
II. Write the formulas for these compounds:
1. strontium chloride – SrCl2
2. potassium iodide - KI
3. aluminum nitride - AlN
4. calcium sulfide - CaS
5. sodium oxide – Na2O
III. Name these compounds
1. Cl2O – Dichlorine monoxide
2. SO2 – Sulfur dioxide
3. CBr4 - Carbon tetrabromide
4. N2O5 - Dinitrogen pentoxide
5. ICl3 - Iodine trichloride
6. NaNO3 - Sodium nitrate
7. Ca3(PO4)2 - Calcium Phosphate
8. KOH - Potassium hydroxide
9. Li2CO3 - Lithium carbonate
10. NaClO3 - Sodium chlorate
Problem Solving:

1. When heated in the air, 1.63 g of Zn combines with 0.40 g of oxygen (O 2) to form zinc
oxide. Calculate the percent composition of the compound formed.
ZnO
Zn = 65.38 g
O = 16 g
ZnO = 81.38

Zn = 65.38 g/81.38 x 100 = 80.34%

O = 16g /81.38g x 100 = 19.66%

2. Aluminum chloride is formed by reacting 13.43 g aluminum with 53.18 g chlorine. What
is the percent composition of the compound?
AlCl3
Al = 26.98g
Cl = 3(35.45g) = 106.35
AlCl3 = 133.34 g

Al = 26.98g/133.34 x 100 = 20.23%

Cl = 106.35g/133.34 x 100 = 79.75%

3. How many moles of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) are there in 1 kg of sodium hydroxide?

number of moles = mass (g) / molar mass (g/mol)

Given:
m = 1kg = 1000g
M = NaOH = 23 + 16 + 1 = 40g/mol

n = m/M
= 1000/40
n = 25 moles
4. How many molecules of hydrogen chloride (HCl) are there in 25 g of HCl?
HCl = 36.45 g/mol
H=1
Cl = 35.45

25g/36.45g/mol = 0.686 mol

0.686 mol x 6.022 x 1023/ 1mol = 4.13 x 1023 mol

5. The analysis of a salt shows that it contains 56.58% K; 8,68% C; and 34.73% O.
Calculate the empirical formula of the substance.
CK2O3
C -12.0107 g/mol - 8.68%
K - 39.0983 g/mol - 56.58%
O - 15.9994 g/mol - 34.73%

C - 8.68/12 = 0.7
K - 56.58/39.09 = 1.5 or 2
O - 34.73/15.9994 = 2.1707 or 3

6. A sulfide iron was formed by combining 2.233 g of iron with 1.926 g of sulfur. What is
the empirical formula of the compound?
