HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan as an indoor sport for
businessmen. Originally called “mintonette,” it gained popularity and was renamed
“volleyball” due to its volleying nature. The sport’s rules were established by Morgan
and printed in the first edition of the Official Handbook of the Athletic League of the
Young Men’s Christian Associations of North America in 1897. In 1916, joint rules
were issued by the YMCA and the NCAA. The United States Volleyball Association
(USVBA), now known as USA Volleyball (USAV), was formed in 1928 and became
the governing body for the sport in the United States. National championships and
tournaments have been held annually since then. Volleyball was introduced to
Europe during World War I by American troops, leading to the formation of national
organizations. The Fédération Internationale de Volley Ball (FIVB) was established in
1947 and grew to include over 210 member countries. Today, volleyball is played
globally and has become a beloved sport in schools, playgrounds, and various
organizations. It continues to captivate audiences with its dynamic and exciting
gameplay.
