Homework #9: Directional Drilling Due Date: Monday 11/12/2023

1) The table below gives data from a directional survey.

Survey Point MD, ft Inclination, I° Azimuth, A°

A 4100 4 30
B 4400 7 12

Point A has coordinates

X = 100 (ft) positive towards the east
Y = 100 (ft) positive towards the north
Z = 4,000 (ft) TVD, positive downwards
The coordinates of the wellhead are (X, Y, Z) = (0, 0, 0)
I. Calculate the X, Y, and Z coordinates of points B using:
A. The Tangential method
B. The Minimum Curvature method
II. Calculate and tabulate the horizontal departure and directional at B point using the
Minimum Curvature Method.

2) Given the following data, calculate the maximum inclination of the well and the
measured depth of the well.
Kick-off Point, KOP 1,000’
Horizontal displacement at total depth 4,000’
Projected TVD of well 10,000’
Build Rate, BUR 4° deg/100’
This is a build and hold wellbore.
