PEC16101: DIRECTIONAL DRILLING

Q. No. Question

1 Following is the well path of a directional well drilling with 20/100 ft deflection tool after
1500 ft TVD of KOP-
i. The well reached at station ‘A’ in N400E azimuth after 400 feet curvature drilling.
ii. From station ‘A’ by drilling 200 feet curvature, the well reached at station ‘B’ and
achieved 100 inclination to left side.
iii. After station ‘B’ by drilling another 200 feet curvature, the well suddenly was
turned to 300 of right side and reached to Station ‘C’.
iv. From Station ‘C’ the well was further turned to 300 of right side by drilling
another 200 feet curvature and reached at Station ‘D”.
v. From Station ‘D’ The well needs to turn to original azimuth at Station ‘E’ by
further drilling of 200 feet curvature to the high side

Using graph paper, draw the complete Ragland Diagram for each deflection of the
above well and mention the inclination, azimuth, tool face setting and dogleg angle
at each station.

A drilling company drilled a 50 incline directional well A of 12 inch bore hole size using
10 inch drill collar in bedding plane of 400 dip in N700E azimuth. He experienced
average 20,000 lb weight on bit.

In the same field in N450E azimuth, the operator is planning to drill Well B of 10 inch size
using 8 inch drill collar with 200 inclination in 300 dip bedding plane.

Using Supplied “Woods and Lubinski” chart determine the required weight on bit for
successful completion of drilling work.

3 A target exists at 10,000 ft TVD, 2500 ft north and 2800 ft east is required to be achieved
by a directional well profile using a bent sub of build up rate 4 0/100 ft. Calculate the
maximum inclinations and total drilled depths to be achieved from 1500 ft, 2500 ft, 3500
ft, and 4500 ft KOP depths.

4 Following are he survey data of a directional well-

KOP = 1000 ft.
Station 1: MD1 = 1200 ft. α1 = 150 ß1 = N810E
Station 2: MD2 = 1400 ft. α2 = 190 ß2 = N930E

Using Minimum Curvature Method, determine actual three dimensional coordinates of

the bit at station 2.

Using 20/100 ft deflection tool the well is desired to turn back original azimuth of station
1 by drilling another 400 feet curvature.

Make a Strategic plan for the correction run and mention three Dimensional coordinates
of the bit after correction.
