IV. METHODOLOGY/PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity

A. Preparatory Activity

I. Daily Routine
Good Morning Sir!
Good morning class! We’re doing good Sir
How are you today?
(Prayer leader: Let’s bow down our head
Everyone, please stand up for the prayer. and pray…. Amen.)
Jamie please led the prayer.
May I remind everyone about our classroom rules, (Students are listening)
1. Keep quiet and listen carefully
2. Gadgets are not allowed during class hour unless
it’s emergency.
3. Raise your right hand if you want to answer and if
you have a question.

Are we clear about the rules? Yes Sir.

B. Lesson Proper

I. Elicit

Our lesson for today is about Solving Problems involving

Conversion of Units.

Let’s start with situations that might need for

conversion of units.

Everyone is accustomed to a certain units of any We are not sure sir because we are
measurement. For example If I ask you how cold or only familiar with degree Celsius.
warm is 72 degree Fahrenheit? Anyone?
It’s close to normal room temperature
Probably you are only familiar with degree Celsius Sir.
when it comes to temperature, then how cold is 22 °C?

Correct, but actually 72 °F and 22 °C are

approximately the same.

How about when you are filling up a form which

requires your height and it says in centimeters (cm) but
you only know your height is 5 feet and 4 inches.
Have you encountered that? What did you do? Yes Sir! I looked it up in google.

Or when you need to buy 1 galloon of “tuba”, How 4 liters Sir or approximately 4 liters.
many liters is one galloon?
You will pay worth 4 liters of tuba according to the
seller, but is it exactly 4 liters though? I think so sir.

No, it is only 3.785 Liters. You loses around 200 mL

of tuba with what you have paid.

II. Engage

Why do we need to learn conversion of units? Because conversion is used in various

activities every day.

How does it helps us in our daily lives? It can help us in cooking for example
Yes, that correct! sir or in professional jobs.
A good example of this is in cooking. Imagine you're
in the kitchen, ready to bake your favorite chocolate
chip cookies. You've found a delicious recipe online,
but there's a catch, it uses different units of
measurement than what you're accustomed to.

(Show the learners the ingredients)

INGREDIENTS (Students examines the recipes and

found out they are not familiar with
8 ounces Butter “ounces”)

6 ounces Brown Sugar

4 tablespoons Golden Syrup

12 ounces Self-raising Flour

8 ounces Plain Chocolate Chips

2 tablespoons Milk

What will you do? Convert the units’ sir into our familiar
units.
Correct! You need to convert the measurements to
ensure your cookies turn out just right.

Probably you are accustomed in using “grams” or Yes Sir.

“cups” so you have to convert the units of the recipes so
you can continue.

But it doesn’t stop with the conversion alone.

What do you think will happen if your conversion is It will probably affect the taste of the
wrong? cookies Sir.

Correct! It will affect the taste, texture, and overall

outcome of the cookies.

Same goes in construction and science experiments. It

will cause problems if the conversion is wrong.

That’s why we need to be precise and accurate when Yes Sir.

doing our conversions. Understood?
III. Explore

Let’s have an activity!

Group yourselves into 2 members each.

Instruction:

Measure and record your height and your partner in

meters. Convert it into feet (ft.) and inches (in) and into
centimeters (cm).

Or if you already know your height in your accustomed

unit such as in feet (ft.) and inches (in), write it down
on the table then convert it to meters (m) and (cm).

Copy the table below in a separate sheet of paper for

your answer. Show your solution.

1 ft. = 12 inches
1 inch = 2.54 cm (Students will get a whole sheet of
1 m = 100 cm paper and will commence in doing the
activity)

Questions:

1. What is the height difference between you and your (Students will answer based on their
partner in terms of meters, inches, and centimeters? calculated answers)

2. Do you know now how to convert meter and inches Yes Sir!
to centimeters? How did you convert it? By using the conversion factors that
are given with the table.

Very good class!

IV. Explain

To be able to solve problems similar to the given (Students will listen to the discussion
activity, we need to practice the skill of converting and will ask questions regarding the
measurements from one unit to another. topic.)

Conversion of units is the conversion between

different units of measurement for the same quantity,
typically through multiplicative conversion factors.

Conversion Factor is a number used to change one set

of units to another, either by multiplying or dividing.
What are the two measurement systems? Metric System and English System Sir.
That’s correct!

The English System which is based on a non-universal

way of measuring by means of human body parts or
other instrument and the Metric System which is based
on a decimal system.

The conversion could be from same system: English

System to English System or Metric System to Metric
System. It could also be from English System to Metric
System and vice versa.

The table of conversion is needed to convert one unit to

another unit.

(Distribute copy of the conversion table to students)

(Students will then examine the

conversion table with Metric System
and English System conversions.)
How to Convert A Unit of Measurement to
Another Unit?

Correct! So here is a step by step procedure on how to By using the conversion factors found
convert a unit into another unit. in the table Sir.

1. Compare the two units.

2. Find the conversion factors that gives the
appropriate ratio to the given unit.
3. Write the conversion as a fraction, where the
denominator is in the same unit as the given unit.
4. Write a multiplication problem with the original
number and the fraction
5. Cancel out similar units that appears on the
numerator and denominator.
6. Solve

Now let’s apply that in an illustrative example.

Illustrative Examples:

1. Conversion of length

Did you understand how it was solved class? Yes Sir!

Very Good!
Let’s have another examples. Anyone wants to try Mettan: Yes Sir, I will try to answer
answering it in the board? the examples on the board.

2. Conversion of mass

3. Conversion of area

4. Conversion of volume

5. Conversion of temperature

Now let’s try applying it in solving problems.

SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING

CONVERSION OF UNITS OF MEASURE

Knowledge of measurement and problem-solving

strategies are necessary in solving problems. Many
problems can be solved using arithmetic or algebraic
processes. There are problems, however, that can be
solved by simply drawing a diagram.
Example: Basha is holding a bucket to be filled with
water. If Popoy pours 143 ounces of water into the
bucket three times to fill it, how many quarts of water
does it take to fill the bucket?

Did you understand how it was solved class? Yes Sir!

Very good!

V. ELABORATE

Let’s have an activity, let’s apply what you have

learned in our discussion.

Answer the following in a sheet of paper. Please show (Students will get a sheet of paper and
your solution. We will check your work right after. will commence answering the activity.)

If you have questions or clarifications, please don’t Yes Sir.

hesitate to ask.

Test I.

1. 8 mi = _________meter
2. 28.08 qt. =_________gal
3. 325 km² =_________ha
4. 85 °F =_________°C
5. 2.2 lb. =_________grams

Test II.

Solve the given word problems below and show all

necessary solutions.

1. The oven has a temperature of 150 °F. What is

the oven’s temperature on the Celsius scale?

What is the volume capacity in cubic inches?

Are you done class? Yes Sir!

Let’s check your answers one by one and discuss how (Students will check their work and
you came up with your answers. will join the discussion while checking
their papers.)
VI. EXTEND

Now that we have learned the prerequisite skill which

is the conversion of measurements from one unit to
another in both Metric and English systems.

Let’s try applying it in situational problems.

Group Activity

Solve the following problems with your partner (Same

groupings with the first activity).

Read and understand the given situation and use your (Students will get a sheet of paper and
learning on solving problems involving units of will commence answering the activity.)
measure to solve the given problems. Show your
complete solution on a separate sheet of paper.

1. A three - layer cake weighs half a kilogram per

layer. In each layer, the cake is decorated with
icing which weighs 100 g. A candle which weighs
250 g is added. What is the total weight in
kilogram of the fully decorated cake?

2. A landscaper is putting in a brick patio. The area

of the patio is 110 square meters. If the bricks
