Famous US cities

New York City

Located on the East Coast, New York City is the most densely populated city in the US. It
has a population of over 8 million people in around 780 km2. As it is on the East coast and
the state it’s lovócated it is one of the original 13 colonies, it is quite old compared to other
Western states.
It also played an important role in the American Revolutionary War, with Americans and
British both struggling to occupy New York and have it under their control.

Today the city is one of the most popular and economically successful cities of the USA. It
has become an iconic city with attractions like Central park or the Statue of Liberty, which
was designed by a French sculptor and now stands on Liberty Island.
Or for example Times Square, which is a commercial hub and a junction of famous roads. It
is famous for its immense amount of LED lit billboards which light up the area at night and
give Times Square sort of a cyberpunk futuristic vibe. Times Square is also famous for the
New Years Ball Drop, when a big ball descends on a pole and when it reaches the bottom it
signifies the New Year.

Las Vegas
Located on the Western side, though not directly the coast, Las Vegas is in the state of
Nevada. Las Vegas is a very young city, as young as 1905, this makes sense as it’s located
on the west, which was colonized later on than the East.
The name Las Vegas is Spanish and it means “the meadows”. Though many people call it
Vegas for short or by other nicknames like “The City of Lights” or “Sin City” or “What
happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”, which is the advertising slogan of the city. It was used
to lure people who want to escape to a fun paradise without any consequences. This makes
sense with the city’s many casinos, hotels, bars and other less healthy coping mechanisms.
These famous luxurious hotels and casinos are the main attractions of the city as well.

For example the Bellagio Hotel and Casino, which is especially well known because of the
movie Ocean’s Eleven starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts. The film
centers around robbing the safe of the casino of the Bellagio Hotel (which is great press im
sure). There are other luxurious hotels in Las Vegas like Caesars Palace but one thing that
all hotels in Las Vegas share is that all of them have a casino on the bottom floor.

Washington DC
-Is located on the East side of the USA. It is the capital of the country and isn’t a part of any
state, it’s a district and its creation is tied to the US Constitution.
-It was named after George Washington, the first president of the USA.
-Today it is one of the most influential cities in the USA and it exercises most of it’s influence
in the field of politics, since the USA’s political center is here, namely the White House, as
well as the Capitol.
-The White House is the official residence and workplace of the American president since
1800 when the capital was moved from Philadelphia to Washington DC.
-It has six floors, almost all of which serve a different purpose.
-It is considered a National Heritage Site.
-The United States Capitol is the seat of the US Congress and the legislative branch of the
federal government.
-It is designed with beautiful architecture and art lining the walls and hallways.
-In 2021 January 6th the Capitol was stormed by a pro-Trump rally, which got so violent that
many people were injured, some died.
-This was during the counting of electoral votes and these rioters were so angry because
they believed that the votes had been counted unjustly.

Los Angeles
-Located on the West coast of the USA, in the state of California, it is the second largest city
in the States and the most populated on the West Coast, with a population of roughly 4
million people.
-The name Los Angeles, means ‘The Angels’ in Spanish. Spanish influence can be felt all
over California, since it was under the rule of Spain and then later Mexico until the Mexican
American War in the 19th century.
-Los Angeles is most known for its beautiful beaches and Mediterranean climate.
-It attracts tourists from all over the world because of it’s geographic advantages but also
because of other attractions like the famous Hollywood sign on Mount Lee which has
become the symbol of the film industry in the USA. Even today, the most amount of movies
are shot all over Los Angeles, but mostly in Hollywood.
-Another popular attraction is also tied to the film industry, which is the Hollywood Walk of
Fame which has over 2700 stars embedded in the ground with the names of people who
were awarded the star in the entertainment industry. This includes actors, producers,
directors, singers and even fictional characters like Mickey Mouse, Shrek, Snow White and
Tinker Bell.
