PNOTES #2 : VISAYAN LITERATURE

The Regional Literature:


Region VI, Western Visayas , made up of the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo and Negros Occidental,
Hiligaynon is the lengua franca, The mother tongue is Kinaray-a or Hiraya. The popular literary art forms are are Binalaybay or poem,
Paktakon on riddle, the Sugidanon or story folktale, the banggianay or debate, the Hurobaton or proverbs, Asoy or epic, Amba or
songs and the Composo or traditional song. Examples of these literary forms are the pieces like Tungkung Langit and Alunsina, (Laze
Selfish Goddess, a Myth) This was myth about two gods who fell in love with each other but ended separate because they ‘d lost their
trust and patience to each other.; Hinilawod , an Asoy. Was an epic poem written by the early inhabitants of the place called Sulod in
Central Panay. The term hinilawod means “Tales from the mouth of the Halawod River.”
This is not just a literary piece but also a source of information about culture, religion and ritual of the ancient people of Sulod,
showing us that ancient Filipinos believed in the “sacred”, the importance of family honor and in the personal courage and dignity of a
person.

Kinds of Myths
1. Origin Myths – the origin of the world, of places, and natural phenomena. Creation myths are origin myths. They
explain why things are the way they are.
2. Historical Myths – myths that tell of some event that might have happened in the distant past. What is lost in
accuracy is gained in meaning, showing the plasticity of myths.
3. Psychological Myths – myths that explain why we do what we do or feel as we feel. Often explained as an
external force responsible for our feelings or actions, they relieve guilt and anxiety.

Amon ginsumsuman Ugaling con icao uhauon Ngaa mapalayo ako sa puloy-an
Sa dalan magbobonbobon.

Linagpang nga turagsoy Buglas, nga ginbuglas, ginbuglas ako
Kanamit gid pro sa puloy-an.
Ang panyo mo cag panyo co
Pagkatapos namon sang kaon Dala diri cay tambijon co Apang ikaw karon ang akon
Linagpang ko nagbati Ugaling con magcasilo palamugnan.
May nagadihal, nagasiyup-siyop Bana ta icao, asawa mo aco.
Ngaa ako saimo indi mapahamtang?
Kay ang bibig tama gid kahapdi
Ang imo kagulangan madulom kag
