Background
This playscape is proposed to be at Bay South, Gardens By The Bay. This space is
located besides Active Garden, with the vision of being a ‘People’s Garden’. It is designed
to be a communal space for people of all ages and walks of life to hang out and bond
through play.

The proposed design shall be aesthetically pleasing, excite both adults and children,
and fitting to the overall nature theme of Active Garden, Bay South, Gardens by the Bay
Singapore.

Design Criteria
1. A nature-based playgarden which complements designated space.
2. Creative & unique with a storyline that ties with the family values (Families for Life)
3. Proposed play structures and elements abide by playground safety standards and
guidelines.

Designbrief: reading between the lines
Criteria
1. connecting to nature 1. playing in/ with nature
Playing in nature and with nature builds environmental
awareness from an early age stage.
In the city, we can design playgrounds with a natural
look and feel, to emulate the atmosphere of woods
or forests. Plus, the integration of greenery and
trees always produces a comforting and cooling
environment.

2. designing for adventure 2. unexpected play possibilities

Instead of tending to be pretty directive on what to
do and how to play, we prefer to work with more
general objects, playable landscapes or multi-usable
interventions. What is most stimulating for children
is a place that fosters possibilities and caters for the
unexpected to happen.

3. shade 3. designing according to user's needs

We consider playgrounds an integral part of public
space. When adults are unchildishly invited to
participate, the playground can become a meeting
place for the whole community. Therefore comfort and
shade are essential characteristics for a public space
to be perceived as inviting and pleasant to everyone.

4. open-ended play 4. stimulating children skills

By setting aside preconceptions about play and the
strict ‘locating’ of different age-groups, we focus on
borderless spaces and multifunctional public areas.
Imagination and creativity are two crucial skills that
need to be developed from a young age, therefore
we always welcome unforseen uses of the spaces we
design.

5. conquering fear 5. learning to take risks

To be prepared for what life has in store for us, we need
to learn to conquer fears and get out of our comfort
zones. Learning by doing, not being afraid to take
risks, practice cooperative learning are some of the
ways children can start to expand their boundaries.
Group play becomes the most important type of play
when children grow up, and can occur in endless
combinations.

Becky’s Play Trail

Playscape Concept
An Immersive, Playful, Close-Up of Nature
This playscape is designed to transport people into the world of
Becky Bunny and her family, and have adventures amidst the
beautiful nature. There are many interesting and unique forms and
textures of nature, from the meandering tree roots, towering trees,
to the intricate patterns of the leaves. Highlighting these features
of nature, this playscape inspires people to look at and immerse
themselves in nature in a different way. The whole scape offers a
range of experiences, from active, challenging play, more calming
play which piques the senses, to open, communal spaces to relax,
making it inviting for families to have fun exploring together.
Cultivating Family Values
Love. Care & Concern. Commitment. Respect.
Families embark on shared adventures, crawling through
burrows and scaling tall trees, fostering bonds through
collaborative play. With collaborative play, families will be
encouraged to communicate more and to learn to respect one
another. This immersive experience among nature transcends
traditional play, inviting families to connect deeply, creating
lasting memories and reinforcing the enduring values of love,
care, commitment, and respect for one another.

As the children spin the carousel, the kinetic energy
will be converted to electrical energy to light up the
attached shade structures

Proposed Shading
Variations of Shading
Shading structures play an important role in playgrounds,
especially in hot climates like Singapore.

The idea comes from the tree canopy of the forest. To

resemble the leafy roofs one can find in this environment,
we introduced simple structures with abstract leaf veins
structures, in different textures such as knitted fabric and
acrylic sheet.

Not only do the patterns reflect the theme of the playscape,

they also provide a playful, close-up take on nature when
the different shadows are casted onto the ground.

We also proposed features such as cooling mist and night

LED projection to bring across varying, intriguing sensorial
play experience while enabling families to beat the heat
with some cooling sensation.
