INSTITUTE DURING ONLINE CLASS

Chapter I

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Not all students can actually afford the expenses of securing a stable internet

connection. The internet stability in our country is also really challenging, aside from

the fact that it's really hard to adopt this new normal way of living new normal way of

learning the more important is the teacher’s presence in the process of learning is

actually compromised. Also, it must feel also need the presence of the students. Teacher

presence affects the learning of the students according to studies this is one of the major

issue of each students in Tanauan Institute to have a stable internet connection is a great

help to adopt properly the lessons taught by teacher.

Online learning is one of the mode of distance learning where teachers and

learners can teach and study in their homes. All educational institutions are looking

toward using online learning to continue the process of education to the students. They

use of online learning platform because of widespread disease which is called COVID

19. On online learning the teachers offers efficient way to teach their lessons to the
students with using the tools such as videos, and PDF as part of their lesson plans. During

online classes, there is a greater chance for students to be easily distracted by social

media or other sites. Another challenge is about internet connection, without consistent

internet connection for students and teachers.

As response to the challenge caused by Covid-19 widespread disease that has also

affected the sector of education leading to envision what people commonly called NEW

NORMAL. In education, new normal demands to unlearn what we have always known-

-the rows of desks, heavy bags, tangible outputs, physical interactions, public exams,

mass lectures, and even parent-teacher relationship. With this basis, distance learning is

directly agreeable as an enabler of this new normal delivery mode of education relying

much on online learning and digital means to adapt as education practices transit to the

new normal.

Seeking clearly, teachers have been allocate a ways to continue the learning

process of students, refusing to give up on their vocations. Shift in evaluating students’

learning. It’s normal for teachers to do seat works and quizzes in virtual mode of

learning. The attention span of whole students at Tanauan Institute has always been a

challenge for teachers, particularly at the level of basic education, but the new normal

has given it a whole new way and dimension. Teachers themselves claim that having

strong internet access is a key problem in the delivery of their lesson especially in

introducing properly the lessons in each day of classes.


Due to the online learning, the school system had changed which truly affects the

students and teachers. This study hopes to contribute awareness towards the barriers and

challenges that encountered by the students at Tanauan Institute. It also hopes to

contribute realization from the people in Institution in regards of students having a hard

time to catch up on unskilled new school system. It will help us to know what are the

situations of the students during the new normal education and will give significant

contribution to our education by providing detailed status and findings.

We all know that the Covid-19 pandemic brought to us a huge problem, especially

to the students and teachers who were truly affected in terms of online learning. This

topic is relevant and timely in this time of pandemic and the researchers chose this topic

to give informations in the administrators to seek possible solutions that may help

students about the challenges that they encountered in everyday life. On the other hand,

the researchers chose this topic because they experienced those various barriers and

challenges by themselves like other students.

The objective of this study is to define the barriers that encountered by the

students in Tanauan Institute during online class. This study aims to raise the awareness

of the institutions towards the barriers that is encountered by the chosen Tanauan

Institute students, on their situation during online class. Some of the students did not

attend in online classes because of unstable connections, noisy environments and so on.
Also, most of the students are pressure and stress in this new normal system of education.

The proponents aim the study to contribute in our school to raise awareness of them

towards on this issue. At the end of the chapter, the participants will be able to provide

support to the continuous of impact of new normal system education specifically of

online learning to the student learners amidst of pandemic.

Statement of the Problem

The main objective of the study is to determine the Barriers Encountered By The

Students In Tanauan Institute During Online Class.

Specifically, it sought answers to the following statements:

1.Determine the students understanding during online class in terms of:

1.1 Having slow internet connection

1.2 Time management

1.3 Noise barrier

1.4 Lack of Gadgets

2.Identify the differences about face-to-face learning and the new mode of learning.

3. Determine the various barriers that experienced by the students.

4. Create potential solutions to the barriers faced by students during in this time of online

learning.
Significance of the Study

Learning is that the aspect of development that connotes modification of

behaviour skills and knowledge that results from practice and skill which probe for

quality of latest normal education system. This significance of the study could be a part

of the introduction of a thesis, it should determine who benefits from the study and the

way that specific audience will enjoy findings vital results of this investigation may be

highly significant and beneficial, specially to the subsequent:

To the school administrators

This research can help them for getting evaluation. Also, it can also guide them

in developing educational policies, curriculum, and strategies toward a more effective

delivery of communication.

To the teachers

This study can help them to identify and access if they are effective teacher .This

study will help them to figure out their weaknesses and strength in some sides also to be

able change their attitudes towards it to make some proper and appropriate adjustments.

To the students

The direct recipients of the study are the students from Tanauan Institute to raise

awareness on their academic performance. This study can help the students to voice out

on what they feel about the online learning, on what are the challenges and experiences

that they faced during online class.

To the community
This study will be beneficial to the community because they will be more

knowledgeable and aware so they will be able to keep up with the new education system.

The study can also measure the level of community acceptance of what the new normal

system of education has.

To the researchers

This study will serve as their guide or pattern in making their own research that

is inline or similar in the said study. It can be use as the basis of their study on how the

barriers affect the Students in Tanauan Institute during Online Class.

Theoretical Framework

This theory supported by Baticulon MD, (2021). The coronavirus disease 2019

(COVID-19) epidemic in the Philippines led medical schools to suspend face-to-face

learning activities and switch to an online curriculum in March 2020. From the

standpoint of a medical student in a developing country, the goal of this study was to

identify hurdles to online learning.

According to Batalayo (2021), the global pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019

(COVID-19) has disrupted education, resulting in school closures all around the world.

Schools in the Philippines followed suit, transitioning to various forms of remote

distance or online learning to ensure learning continuity during unprecedented


occurrences like the COVID-19 pandemic. On the other hand, there are some

reservations about the new learning platform.

Most online courses, however, particularly those serving K-12 students, have a

format much more similar to in-person courses. The teacher helps to run virtual

discussion among the students, assigns homework, and follows up with individual

students. Sometimes these courses are synchronous (teachers and students all meet at

the same time) and sometimes they are asynchronous (non-concurrent). In both cases,

the teacher is supposed to provide opportunities for students to engage thoughtfully with

subject matter, and students, in most cases, are required to interact with each other

virtually. (Loeb, S., 2020)

The flow of the study was presented through a framework. It includes, Input,

Process, and Output (I.P.O.) that are considered essential in the whole study.

Research Paradigm

To further understand the study, the researchers provided the conceptual

framework. Input-Process-Output (IPO) model was used. The conceptual framework

illustrates the different factors that's could affect the outcome of the study and how it

was conducted.

The first box contains the input of the study. We all know that new system of

education and learning towards now this time of pandemic has a many concerns, such
as having an unstable internet connection, noisy surrounding, lack of gadgets, and time

management that experienced from students during online class.

The second box represents the process of the study. And it contains the survey

questionnaire for gathered data.

The third box presents the output of the study. As the analysis of the barriers

encountered by the respondents was determined after the treatment of the gathered data.

Assumption and Hypothesis

This study was conducted based on social connection is the most significant

predictor of online learning enjoyment, and a lack of social interaction is the most

significant impediment to student achievement;

1.Technical challenges

They have trouble with live classrooms, using proper icons, MS Office,

communication-related apps and websites, and browsing study materials, among other

things. They may be unfamiliar with technology skills such as logging in, attending live

classes, generating and submitting work, and connecting with teachers and peers.

2.Distraction

Online learning lacks the framework of a typical classroom, it can be difficult and

distracting. Social media, texting, television, and family are among the most common

distractions for students, all of which can divert focus away from the task at hand and

reduce productivity.
This research demonstrates there are three key factors that represent barriers to e-

learning: the nature of e-learning as a learning approach, the use of technology, and

concerns about lack of time and potential interruptions when trying to complete e-

learning.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study focused on the Barriers Encountered by the selected students in

Tanauan Institute during Online Class. This research study consists of 30 respondents.

The respondents randomly selected the students of Tanauan Institute. They are chosen

one because they are the recipients of the school. Due to the new normal system of

education our respondents have difficulty adjusting because of this and it cause such a

problem that we do not experience in our usual way of learning such as being pressured

and stressed to have a good signal, in loads of gadgets to be used, in noisy surrounding

and much more.

The researchers utilized survey questionnaire as an instrument in gathering data.

This study only determined the Barriers Encountered by the Students in Tanauan

Institute during online class. Likewise; it does include other concerns and perceptions of

the respondents towards other form of the Barriers Encountered by the Students in

Tanauan Institute during online class.


Definition of Terms

For consistency, unity of concepts and ideas and for a better understanding the

following terms which were used in the study were defined.

Barriers. It is the factors that affect a student's performance during online classes.

Online Class. It can also be called as online learning. It is defined as a normal

class with a virtual medium where teachers use certain apps to communicate and lecture

students.

Encountered. It is called the tackle challenges of online class like distraction and

management, technical issues and also understanding course expectations.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the relevant literature and studies that the researcher

considered in strengthening the claim and importance of the present study.

Related Literature
This part of literature is composed of several ideas which seized primarily from

different research papers. It includes some studies conducted by different researchers

which can be related to the present study about its subjective matter.

Foreign

The book of Heafner, T., et al (2020) entitled Exploring the Effectiveness of

Online Education in K-12 Environments, stated that the integration of technology in

classrooms is hastily rising as a manner to provide more educational possibilities for

students. As digital learning environments become more popular, evaluating the impact

of this technology on student success is vital. “Exploring the Effectiveness of Online

Education in K-12 Environments” combines empirical proof and best practices in

modern studies K-12 distance learning and virtual schools. Emphasizing modern study

and opportunities, this book is an all-inclusive reference source for administrators,

teachers, researchers, teacher educators, and policymakers interested by the

improvement and implementation of mixed and electronic learning in primary and

secondary education.

According to Mm Zalat (2021) the experiences, challenges, and acceptance of

e-learning as a tool for teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic among university

medical staff e-learning was underutilized in the past especially in developing countries.
The perceptions, evaluate their experiences, recognize their barriers, challenges of e-

learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, and investigate factors influencing the

acceptance and use of e-learning as a tool teaching within higher education. The highest

barriers to e-learning were insufficient/ unstable internet connectivity has highest,

inadequate computer labs is the second highest rate, lack of computers/ laptops has the

third in percentages, and technical problems was the lowest percentage.

The research article of Ashraf, M. Et. Al.( 2021) entitled The Challenges of

Online Learning during the COVID-19 Pandemic Encountered by Students in Pakistan,

identified the challenges faced by Pakistani students and to determine regarding

challenges faced during online learning in perspective of students in Pakistan . As a

results, online learning in Pakistan cannot produce good results in developing countries,

where a huge impacts of students are not able to access the good internet facility due to

technical as well as financial issues.

Beer, M. Et.al (2015) their book entitled E-Learning Challenges Faced by

Academics in Higher Education: A Literature Review, stated that some of the research

work on the limitations of e-learning technology, categorises it in five challenges that

teachers are faced with and suggestions for a successful e-learning outcome, and also

discusses the use of e-learning technology some of the challenges they face during

online learning.
The journal of Becker, K., et.al. (2013) sought to identify the key barriers to e-

learning use as perceived by past users. The extent to which these barriers impact on a

user’s intension to use e- learning in the future was examined. It identified especially

how these barriers mean users are less likely to want to use more e-Learning. There are

some caveats to be offered in relation to the findings of the current article. The

respondents to the survey were all employed in one industry and therefore generalising

to other industries. This may have represented a range of different types and formats of

e-learning experience.

According to United Nations, Education During COVID-19 Beyond,

Educational institution closures have had a significant impact on the provision of critical

services to children and communities. The finance of education may confront

considerable issues as fiscal pressures rise and development assistance is strained.

Governments and partners around the world responded quickly to support education

continuity, resulting in the development of distance learning alternatives.

According to the book published by Amir et al (2020), the sudden closure of

universities has been an issue because of the pandemic. It says that students’ struggles

during online learning were unstable internet connection, financial difficulties, and time

management. However, the students the students can still adapt to it despite of the

situation.
Local

According to the article by Hermanto, B. (2021) revealed that the Covid-19

pandemic requires almost all human interest to shift to virtual media, including education

services. Now, education services should adapt to online learning methods. This change

is a challenge in education, which should also prepare students to adapt to face the

challenges of the generation of society.

In an e-book by Barrot, Llenares, and Rosario (2021), the educational system

has faced a health crisis that dealt problems to students. It is important to have

understanding of students’ online learning difficulties. It is revealed that the COVID-19

pandemic had the greatest impact on the quality of the learning experience and the

students’ mental health. In addition, their greatest hindrance in online learning is

environment at home, and their least challenge was their familiarity towards technology.

According to this article of Doherty ,D., et al. (2018) it has identified barriers

and solutions amongst medical educators to the implementation of online learning in

medical education. Results can be used to inform institutional and educator practice in

the development of further online learning. This article also has thematically synthesized

evidence of key barriers and solutions to the development and implementation of online

learning from the medical educator’s perspective. These included skills, resources,
institutional strategies and support and attitude with similar themes across many studies.

This highlights the ubiquity of barriers to online learning across diverse medical

education systems and speaks to a shared history of attempting to overcome them.

According to Mabulay, (2021). Barriers to Online Learning in the Time of

COVID‑19: A National Survey of Medical Students in the Philippines, The coronavirus

disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic in the Philippines caused medical schools to

abruptly switch to an online curriculum in March 2020, forcing them to discontinue face-

to-face learning activities. The goal of this research was to find out what obstacles people

face when it comes to getting a job. Medical students in a developing country’s opinion

on online learning. Demographics, medical school information, access to technological

resources, study habits, living conditions, self-assessment of capacity for and perceived

barriers to online learning, and proposed interventions were all collected using a

barriers were classified into four groups. As they attempted to adjust to online learning,

assign activities. New blended learning helps those students who is not adaptive to have

efficient learning because of the barriers that was blocking their intelligence such as their

noisy surrounding and having problems with their internet connection and it seems they

aims to be unlearned. Some establishments published that the learners have their own

learning materials and do all quizzes, class projects, and other forms of performance are

required. So it is possible to make activities, such as quarterly assessments.

Internet connectivity, and technical problems were the main barriers in online classes.

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of parents regarding the

challenges of distance learning faced by their children during the coronavirus outbreak

challenges both the teachers and the students as it occurs something new to them.

Covid-19 forced the shift to online learning, but some universities in

underdeveloped countries are not adequately equipped to each online efficiently.

Moreover, the faculty training ids different globally between high-income, middle, and

lower income countries. Another major obstacle is the internet connectivity for

underprivileged students. It is a defector that face to face instruction is more efficient

than online and the complete shift to online during covid-19 mistakes it necessary to

investigate the perception of faculty and students on online learning to identify the

advantages, and challenges of online learning (Beteills, et al., 2020).

According to Fabito, B.(2020) Barriers and challenges of Computing Students

in Online learning Environment: Insights From one private University in the Philippines.

The literature outlines a number of benefits of blended learning, policymakers must

identify the constraints and challenges that students face in order to ensure that their
online learning experience is not harmed. Understanding these academic institutions in

developing rules that will assist students advance and improve their online learning

experience. This study was done to determine the obstacles faced by computer students

at one private university in the Philippines.

The latest study by Barrott (2021) reveals that despite the very fact that

countless studies are conducted on the topic, little is thought about the challenges

students confront and also the techniques they employ to beat them. As a result, the goal

of this study is to fill within the gaps. The findings, which were supported a mixed-

methods approach, showed that online learning challenges among college students

differed in type and intensity. The foremost challenging challenge they experienced was

associated with their home learning environment, whereas digital literacy and

proficiency offered the smallest amount of a challenge. They are going to possess lots

of trouble. The COVID-19 epidemic, per the studies, has the best impact on students’

mental state and also the quality of their learning experience.

A study conducted by Cahapay, (2021) stated that the problems encountered by

college students in online assessment amid COVID-19 crisis . This paper aimed to

describe the problems encountered by the students in online assessment amid the

COVID-19 crisis. The results revealed six themes of problems encountered by the

students during online learning. These problems of students that encounter during
online class which is anxiety over tracking tools ,unstable internet connection, electric

power interruptions ,and distractions in the environment.

A study conducted by Baticulon, R. (2021) states that barriers to online

learning in the time of COVID- 19: A national Survey Of medical Students in the

Philippines Each medical school developed its own rules for learning activities, altered

assessment measures, and established promotion procedures after being forced to switch

to an online curriculum. As a result, students’ learning experiences varied between

medical schools across the country. The student network of the Association of Philippine

Medical Colleges called for the suspension of online learning and the end of the current

semester in an open letter posted on social media, citing difficulties that students had

faced, including poor internet connection, limited access to gadgets, and a lack of study

space at home.

Another study by Bahian, E. (2020) sought to assess the online learning

difficulties faced by students at Eastern Visayas State University-Ormoc City Campus.

It looks at the differences in student capacity for online learning, student barriers to

online learning, and some demographic and technological aspects of students.

Barriers towards online learning among graduate nursing students in a

Philippine higher education institution during the global COVID-19 outbreak.

Philippines was no exception and schools in the country in learning to ensure continuity
of learning to the students. The purpose of this study to determine the barriers to online

learning among graduate nursing students in a higher education institution in the

quality of learning from the students which is the learning environment at home,

learning experience , and students’ mental health during online class. The result of study

online learning students experience in challenges, in how the COVID-19 impacted their

online learning experience, and the strategies that they used to confront these challenges.

Synthesis

The different studies in related literature and studies helped a lot in pursuing

the purpose of the study. The related literature and studies gave more knowledge to the

researchers for better understanding of the study. And it focuses on the Barriers

Encountered by the Students in Tanauan Institute during Online Class.

The previous studies conducted by different researchers showed similarities to

the present day. The study of Abuhammad (2020), Apau, J. (2020),and Baticulon

(2021) was similar to the present study and their studies stated that the barriers encounter

by students during online class.

The study of Barrot (2021) and Dryer (2017) provides the factors of barriers

that can affect to the students during online class.

Additionally, the studies conducted by Callabero, R. (2015) and Bahian, E.

(2021) proved that the internet cost and technical problems are the major problems of

the students in this time of new online learning.


In general, the mentioned researchers were similar to the previous study since

they all focused on the barriers in online learning. Also, our study covered the Barriers

Encountered by the Students in Tanauan Institute During Online

The research literature confirms that the new blended learning helps those

students who is not adaptive to have efficient learning because of the barriers that was

blocking their intelligence such as their noisy surrounding and having problems with

their internet connection and it seems they aims to be unlearned.

As discussed ,it has identified barriers and solutions amongst medical educators

to the implementation of online learning in medical education and the goal of this

research was to find out what obstacles people face when it comes to getting a job. And

lastly, it can be used to inform institutional and educator practice in the development of

further online learning.

However, in the related studies confirms that the one of the basic problem is that

the implementation of classes despite of the closure order. And also teachers and

students need to adopt a new normal in teaching and learning amidst the pandemic. This

platform challenges both the teachers and students as it is something new to them.

As discussed, The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on the students’ learning

environment at home, learning experience, and students’ mental health during online
class. The result of study online learning students experience in challenges, and

strategies they used to confront these challenges.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter affords the research layout, sampling method, the difficulty of the

look at, research tool, technique of information and references.

Research Design

This have a look at determined the barriers encountered with the students in

Tanauan Institute throughout on-line class. The descriptive - correlation approach

become used on this look at. Descriptive research design can use a wide variety of

research methods to investigate not one only but it also more than variables McCombes

(2019)

Subject of the Study

The subject of study consists of 30 respondents which are randomly selected

from Senior High students both Grade 11 and Grade 12 of Tanauan Institute. They are

the respondents because they are the recipients of the school. Due to the new normal

system of education our respondents have difficulty adjusting because of this and what

are the challenges and experiences that they are facing under it.
Research Instrument

The main tool used in this study was a researcher – made questionnaire –

checklist. Set of questionnaire-checklist was constructed for the student respondents.

As an effective research with the obligation to collect information about questions

connected to the barriers that encountered by the students of Tanauan Institute in this

time of pandemic, we developed 15 questions about the performance of students during

this pandemic on how they handle their time and how to improve knowledge amidst of

the barriers that they experienced in new system of education.

Data Gathering Procedure

After the validation of the instrument, the researcher's secured a written permit to

the administrator of Tanauan Institute ,Records from the registar office and guidance

office are useful enough for the needed data on Barriers Encountered by Students during

online learning.

After given permission ,the researcher explained the purpose of the study to the

selected respondents and then they made sure each participant corresponds to their

predefined criteria. The researcher's collected the data by means of survey questionnaire

that comprises their age ,gender ,year level , and student status .The problems

encountered by the second part of the questionnaire that was given to them. After the

respondents have taken the questionnaire the Google forms were checked ,tallied ,

interpreted and analyzed.


Sampling Technique/ Sampling Method

The researchers use random sampling where the respondents comprise of 30

Senior High School both Grade 11 and 12 students are randomly chosen in Tanauan

Institute .
