— darkness exists to make light truly count. ☾

It’s one of those nights. One of those nights, meaning Jeongguk is smoking in that tiny excuse of a
balcony that he’s slowly becoming acquainted with. It’s November, and Jeongguk knows
November means cold nights, way too cold to be outside wearing just a t-shirt. But he also knows
what would happen if he tried to smoke inside—don’t you dare smoke in my apartment, spoken in
that deliciously deep voice that’s always echoing in some corner of his head.

He’s almost mesmerized, watching the way the smoke twirls in the air with the bright lights of the
Seoul sky behind. He’s never been one to romanticise what is probably his filthiest vice, but no one
can deny that it looks sort of pretty. Or maybe it’s just Jeongguk’s tired brain, erroneously
mistaking banal things for beauty at two in the morning.

Even with the cold biting the bare skin of his arms and raising goosebumps even on his ribcage,
Jeongguk always finds it hard to not get stuck in his mind. It’s something he can’t help, getting lost
in his thoughts when he goes for a smoke. He used to be worrying about assignments and marks all
the time, even if the reason why he smokes—before it became a need—is to calm his anxieties, but
he has always had a busy mind. Lately there’s something else that he’s been trying to figure out.
He’s been thinking about the meaning of happiness.

Jeongguk is aware of how naïve of him it is to say that happiness is that full, euphoric feeling in his
chest he has been feeling lately, because he knows how ephemeral those moments are. But it’s a
constant lately, steady and overflowing, and thinking of it being gone seems stupid.

He tries to not fall into a cliché, because hey, maybe what he feels isn’t really happiness, after all.
Maybe it’s just elation caused by a good moment, one that will turn into a good memory once it’s
over. The conclusion he gets to is that happiness isn’t what he feels, but the reason behind it.

And who knew happiness could be a boxy smile? That it could be the asymmetry of a pair of
brown eyes with one monolid and a double eye lid? A freckle on the tip of a big nose, on the border
of a thick, full lower lip?

“What are you doing? You’ve been there for ages,” calls a voice behind his back, startling
Jeongguk and almost making him drop his cigarette.

“I’m smoking,” he replies, earning himself a raised eyebrow. “What?”

“You’re a smartass.” Jeongguk just smiles, stubbing his cigarette against the railing and taking the
end with him—he used to be careless and drop them down to the street, not minding if someone
was unfortunate enough to be right under. It’s Taehyung who’s reason why he hasn’t dropped one
on the sidewalk for months.

“But I’m your smartass,” Jeongguk replies then, catching a glimpse of an eyeroll before Taehyung
sneaks back into the apartment, Jeongguk trailing behind. “Tae?”

Taehyung hums, turning around a little as Jeongguk closes the door behind him, locking it. After
that he leans forward, pressing a noisy kiss on the corner of Taehyung’s mouth.

“What was that for?” Taehyung asks, trying to sound indifferent. But Jeongguk doesn’t miss the
way the corner of his mouth lifts up into a small smile, the tiniest hint of delight.

“Just feeling soft,” Jeongguk replies, hiding his face in the crook of Taehyung’s neck. He’s not
embarrassed of showing his affections, especially not when it comes to Taehyung, but sometimes
his heart feels too full and he gets shy, afraid it will show in his face and actions and scare
Taehyung away. Because no matter what, he’s determined not to drive Taehyung away, to make
him stay.

Taehyung huffs out a laugh, using one hand to cup Jeongguk’s jaw and tilt his head up, aligning
their lips. Jeongguk doesn’t wait for Taehyung to lean forward first, their lips meeting halfway as
Jeongguk melts against Taehyung. The angle is a little off, Taehyung not quite facing him as his
mouth welcomes Jeongguk’s in a sweet, slow kiss.

A kiss. A kiss can be happiness, too. Jeongguk refuses to believe otherwise as he slowly drinks
Taehyung in, takes in how soft the sliver of exposed skin where his sweater rides up is, in how
good he smells.

And then there’s a whine, and the feeling of tiny paws against his calves, and even before
Taehyung’s lips let go of his, he knows what’s going on. Taehyung laughs a little, crouching down
to pick up the brown puddle at their feet.

“Oh my God, Fudge, you’re such a jealous baby, aren’t you?” he says, Jeongguk watching as the
dog licks Taehyung’s nose and cheeks. “Don’t worry, you’re still my favourite, aren’t you? Ah, my
baby.”

Jeongguk rolls his eyes fondly, seeing right through Taehyung’s lie. He knows he’s the favourite
now, and there’s nothing Fudge can do about it. But there’s still something incredibly endearing
about it, about Taehyung, Fudge and him and how it makes him feel at home, like after so long he
has found his place.

It’s one of those nights, and Jeongguk is in love.
