Reaction Of Beams

Aim:

The sustaining force for a bar are calculated in this experiment based on the load X’s application point.

Apparatus:

The experiment include.

- Elastic line under different support conditions.

- Elastic line under different loads.

- Demonstration of the Maxwell-Betti law.

- Supporting forces in statically undetermined systems.

Procedure:
The experiment is set up as shown in the diagram.
The following equipment is required:
- Steel bar 6×20×1000 mm (4)
- Rider for weight (6)
-Suspender for weights (5)
-3 weights 5N, 1 weight 2.5 N
-2 articulated supports (2) with dynamometer (7)

The load of 20 N is applied in the Centre at x=500 mm.

-Fasten the articulated supports (2) at a distance of 1000 mm.
- Push the rider (6) for the weight suspender onto the bar (4) and place the bar on the supports.
-Loosen the locking screw (1) on the support (2).
-Adjust the height of the support using the rotary knob (3) until the bar (4) is horizontal.
-Re-secure the support using the locking screw (1)
-Set the scale on the dynamometer (7) to zero by twisting
-Suspend the weight (5) and load the bar
-Read the supporting forces on the dynamometers (7) and record
Theory:

Measurement of the supporting

forces:

 Balance of moments around

support B:

∑ MB = 0 = F (L-X) – AL

 Supporting force A:

A = F (1- X/𝐿 )

 Balance of moments around

support A:

∑ MA = 0 = BL – FX

 Support force B:

B=F(X/L)
Observation:

A bar with a length L =1000 mm and a load of F =20N produces the following supporting forces must
correspond to the load.

Measured supporting forces at a load of F= 20N (values for one half only; the
other half is symmetrical)

Results:

I note from the results of the above table that when we removed the weight from point A, the reading
results decreased and the reading results increased at point B.

When doing the calculations, I noticed that the value at point A decreases, while at point B it increases.

Discussion the result:

Significance: The table above shows the correctness of my results.

Compare the value: When comparing the results of the book (the reference), I found that the results of our
readings are very close, and this means that the experiment was successful.

1. In case of emergency, call University Security on 9114 0217 and inform the instructor/lab technician
immediately.

2. Ensure that you know location of all fire exits and evacuation route(s) from the laboratory. Eating,
drinking, or smoking is NOT allowed in the laboratories. The working area is to be kept clean and free of
personal belongings.
