What is Technology?

•the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry

Main Ages
• Pre-Mechanical Era
•It can be defined as the time between 3000 B.C. and 1450 A.D
• Early humans’ life was simple and the concern of the members of the community were food,
water, shelter, reproduction, and safety from natural occurrences and wild animals
Petroglyph- are images created by removing part of a rock surface
•the abacus was invented in this period after the development of numbering systems.
• Smoke signals were especially useful as a tracking tool.
• As an alternative for smoke signal, they used horns to signal and communicate with others.
Used plants and stones as writing materials
Papyrus- is made from a plant that grows on the banks of the nile river in egypt.
• Mechanical Era
The mechanical age can be defined as the time between 1450 and 1840.
• A lot of new technologies were developed in this era due to an explosion of interest in
computation and information
• slide ruler (an analog computer used for multiplying and dividing) were invented in this
period.
• Blaise Pascal invented the Pascaline, a very popular mechanical computer capable of adding,
subtracting, multiplying, and dividing two numbers.
Printed materials are mass produced through the printing press. Libraries and other repositories
were built.
People used the power of steam, developed machine tools, established iron production and
manufacturing of various products
• Electromechanical Era
•The electromechanical age heralded the beginnings of telecommunications as we know it today
•This age can be defined roughly as the time between 1840 and 1940.
Telegraph - is the long-distance transmission of textual or symbolic messages
The telephone was created by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876
The first radio developed by Guglielmo Marconi in 1894
Television
The invention of the world’s first electronic television was created by a 21- year-old inventor
named Philo Taylor Farnsworth in year 1927.
Punch/Punched Card - paper cards with fixed rows and columns to record information that can
be read back or interpreted later by other machines called card readers,
Harvard Mark 1 created by IBM in 1944. This 8ft x 50ft x 2ft big computer weighed a
whopping five tons and had to be programmed using punch cards.
• Electronic Era
The history of computer began when ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator
and Calculator) was completed in 1945.
The first multipurpose computer, ENIAC set speed records with an amazing 5,000
additions per second.
•This age can be defined roughly as the
time between 1940 and 1970.
Vacuum tube

•Digital Era
•The information age, made possible by the advent of electronic computers, is
characterized by the shift from traditional industry to an economy based on information
digitization.
•This age can be defined roughly as the time between Late 90’s to Present.Information Age
•One of the major factor that made possible of the foundation of the information age is
the emergence of Internet.
Internet and social networks paved the way for faster communication. Voice, image,
sound and data are digitalized.
• Also known as the computer age, digital age, or new media age.
• People advanced the use of microelectronics in the invention of personal computers, mobile
devices, and wearable technology
Brief History of Internet
•Internet itself has existed since 1969
•WWW (World Wide Web) was created in 1989 by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee and its
introduction in 1991

Internet of Things
•The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to the billions of physical devices around the world
that are now connected to the internet, all collecting and sharing data.
•Sometimes knows as Internet of Everything, IoE. Internet of Things
•The Internet of Things is making the fabric of the world around us smarter and more
responsive, merging the digital and physical universes (Ranger, 2020).

History of Internet of Things

•The actual idea of connected devices had been around longer, at least since the 70s.
Back then, the idea was often called “embedded internet” or “pervasive
computing”.
•The term internet of things was first introduced by Kevin Ashton in 1999 during his work at
Procter & Gamble.
•Kevin Ashton wanted to attract senior management’s attention to a new exciting
technology called RFID. Because the internet was the hottest new trend in 1999 and
because it somehow made sense, he called his presentation “Internet of Things”.
•One of the first examples of an Internet of Things is from the early 1980s, and was a
Coca Cola machine, located at the Carnegie Melon University. Local programmers
would connect by Internet to the refrigerated appliance, and check to see if there was a
drink available, and if it was cold, before making the trip.

Examples of Internet of Things

• Airbiquity - is a software and engineering company that provides over-the-air (OTA)
updates and data management services for connected cars.
• Dash - Dash's free app for iOS and Android receives data from a variety of sensors to
keep you informed about your car's current status and immediate or future maintenance
needs.
• Insteon - In addition to controlling lighting and appliances, Insteon lets users monitor
windows, doors, water leaks, smoke and more via sensors.Examples of Internet of Things
