ABSTRACT

Explain how forecast bucketing works when a Shipping Calendar is defined.

HISTORY

24-Jan-2024 - Created

DETAILS

When Forecast are defined in Period buckets, the Manufacturing Calendar and Shipping Calendar must align for proper forecast bucketing in the Horizontal Plan.

SUMMARY

In Advanced Supply Chain Planning (ASCP), Forecasts are entered in Period Buckets on the E-Business (EBS) instance. After the data is collected and the ASCP plan is run the
Horizontal Plan displays the forecast quantities one period earlier.

Forecast Data - EBS

Bucket Date Quantity
Periods 25-FEB-24 31,485
Periods 31-MAR-24 12,133
Periods 28-APR-24 11,483
Periods 26-MAY-24 34,435

The above data indicates that the customer has their Calendar Type setup as 5/4/4.

Horizontal Plan - ASCP

Order Type 25-FEB 31-MAR 28-APR

Forecast 12,133 11,483 34,435

For 25-FEB-2024, Horizontal Plan shows 12,133, this is the EBS figure for 31-MAR-2024.
For 31-MAR-2024, Horizontal Plan shows 11,483, this is the EBS figure for 28-APR-2024.
For 28-APR-2024, Horizontal Plan shows 34,435, this is the EBS figure for 26-MAY-2024.

The expectation is that the forecast data in the Horizontal Plan should align with the forecast data entered in EBS.

The issue can be reproduced with the following steps:

1. Define Shipping Calendar and assign it to the Organization.

2. On the EBS instance, enter forecast data in Period Buckets.
3. Run the Planning Data Collection in Targeted Refresh Mode and for Forecast data.
4. Associate the Forecast as a Demand Schedule for an ASCP plan.
5. Run the ASCP Plan.
6. Open the Supply Chain Workbench and navigate to the Horizontal Plan for the item and observe the difference in the quantities and dates compared to EBS.

The cause of the issue is that a Shipping Calendar has been defined and it does not match the manufacturing calendar assigned to the organization.

The calendar being used to enter the forecast data in EBS is defined as 7 days on and 0 days off with Sunday being considered the first day of the week.

The Shipping Calendar being used by this plan is defined as 5 days on and 2 off (Monday - Friday on / Saturday - Sunday off).

When the ASCP plan is run, the initial scheduling of the demand takes place using the Shipping Calendar. The forecast date falls on a Sunday, the Shipping Calendar sees this as an
off day, so it is moved to the previous working day which would be Friday.

This can be observed by comparing the forecast data in EBS with the forecast data in the Supply Chain Workbench:

Forecast Data - EBS

Bucket Day of Week Date Quantity
Periods Sunday 31-MAR-2024 12,133
Periods Sunday 28-APR-2024 11,483
Periods Sunday 26-MAY-2024 34,435
Periods Sunday 30-JUN-2024 20,483

Supply Chain Workbench - ASCP

Order Type Day of Week Date Quantity

Forecast Friday 29-MAR-2024 12,133
Forecast Friday 26-APR-2024 11,483
Forecast Friday 24-MAY-2024 34,435
Forecast Friday 28-JUN-2024 20,483

Because these dates fall 2 days earlier, they are actually being bucketed in the previous period and this is why they show up in the Horizontal Plan one period early.

Solution

In order to fix this, the calendar being used for forecast data needs to be rebuilt with Friday as the start of the week.

1. Ensure that the profile BOM: Week and Period Start Day is set to 'First Day of Calendar' at the Site level.
2. Change the From Date in the Calendar Date Range section of the Workday Calendar form:
a. Navigation: Bills of Material > Setup > Calendars.
b. Query the 7 on 0 off calendar being used for forecast data.
c. Change the From Date so that it falls on a Friday.
d. Save your changes.
e. Tools > Build.
3. Now when you go into your forecasts, for your Bucket Types of Periods, the date shown should be Friday.
4. Run a Targeted Refresh Planning Data Collection for Forecasts.
5. Run the ASCP plan.
