Aptitude procedure for the master's degree program in Mathematics in Science and Engineering at the
Technical University of Munich
2.3.1 a transcript of records with modules amounting to at least 140 credits, of which 118 credits
must be shown as examination achievements; the transcript of records must be issued or
certified by the responsible examination authority or the responsible study secretariat,
2.3.2 the curriculum on which the university degree is based (e.g. module handbook),
2.3.3 a tabular CV,
2.3.4 a written justification of a maximum of 1 to 2 DIN A4 pages for choosing the Mathematics in
Science and Engineering course of study at the Technical University of Munich, in which the
applicant explains the particular motivation and career goals that made them choose this
course consider the course of study to be particularly suitable; The special willingness to
perform must be justified, for example, by statements about course-specific vocational
training, internships, stays abroad or subject-specific further training in the bachelor's
program that goes beyond attendance times and compulsory courses; This must be proven by
attachments if necessary:
2.3.5
(Curricular analysis), in which applicants compile their grades, credits and semester hours per week of
their examination achievements in accordance with 5.1.1 point 2; If necessary, the credits must be
converted into the European Credit Transfer System in accordance with Section 7 APSO; If necessary, the
grades must be converted into the grading system of the Technical University of Munich in accordance

3.31The selection committees each consist of two members from among the members of the Faculty of
Mathematics who are authorized to examine in the course of study in accordance with Article 62
Paragraph 1 Sentence 1 BayHSchG in conjunction with the University Examiner Ordinance.2At least
one member must be a university professor within the meaning of the BayHSchPG.3The activity as a
member of the commission for the aptitude test can be carried out in addition to the activity as a
member of the selection committee.4The members are appointed by the commission for the
aptitude test for six months; No. 3.2 Sentence 9 applies accordingly.5Different selection committees
can be appointed for each criterion and level.
1.Professional qualifications
1The curricular analysis is not carried out through a schematic comparison of the modules,
but rather on the basis of competencies.2It is based on the elementary subject groups of
the Bachelor's degree program in Mathematics at the Technical University of Munich (at
least 27 credits) listed in the following table.3If it has been determined that there are no
significant differences in the acquired competencies (learning outcomes) for modules
amounting to at least 27 credits according to modules at the Technical University of
Munich, a maximum of 50 points will be awarded.
4Missing skills will be deducted from the score of 50 according to the credits of the
assigned modules of the Bachelor's degree program in Mathematics at the Technical
University of Munich, multiplied by a factor of 2.5Negative points are not awarded.
2.Final grade
1For every tenth of a grade that the average calculated over 118 credits is better than 3.0,
3 points are awarded.2The maximum number of points is 60 points.3If a final certificate
with more than 140 credits is available at the time of application, the assessment will be
based on the best-graded modules totaling 118 credits.4It is the applicant's responsibility
to list these as part of the application and to ensure in writing that the information
provided is correct.5To the extent that this occurs, the average is calculated from the best
graded module examinations amounting to 118 credits; If this information is missing, the
overall average grade provided by the applicant will be used.
6The overall grade average is calculated as the weighted average of the graded modules
listed.7The grade weights of the individual modules correspond to the assigned credits.8th
When determining the grade, one decimal place is taken into account; all other decimal
places are deleted without rounding.
3.Letter of justification
1The written justification is evaluated on a scale of 0 to 10 points based on the examples
2. Interest: The applicant can present the connection between personal interests and the
content of the course in a structured manner.
3The two selection committee members independently evaluate each of the two criteria,
with the criteria being weighted equally.4The score is the arithmetic mean of the individual
ratings, rounded up to whole scores.
17
5.1.2 The score for the first level is the sum of the individual scores, rounded up to whole scores.
5.1.31Anyone who has achieved at least 55 points has passed the aptitude test.2In cases where it has
been determined that only individual technical requirements from the first degree program
are not met, the selection committee may require that basic examinations from the
bachelor's degree program in mathematics worth a maximum of 20 credits be taken.3These
basic examinations must be taken in the first year of study.4Failed basic examinations may
only be repeated once within this period at the next examination date.5The examination
board can make admission to individual module examinations dependent on passing the
basic examination.
5.1.4 Anyone who has achieved fewer than 45 points has not passed the aptitude test.
5.2.21The selection interview must be carried out individually for each applicant.2The interview lasts
at least 20 and a maximum of 30 minutes per applicant.3The content of the conversation
covers the following main topics:
1. Ability to work scientifically or in a fundamental and method-oriented manner,
2. existing specialist knowledge from your first degree (e.g. by outlining the solution to an
exemplary problem),
3. Applicants' insight into possible subject areas of the course as well as their particular
willingness to perform and motivation; The applicants are willing and able to educate
themselves independently beyond the classroom hours.
4The documents submitted in accordance with 2.3 may also be the subject matter.5Technical
knowledge that is only to be imparted in the Master's program in Mathematics in Science and
Engineering is not decisive.6With the consent of the applicants, a member of the group of
students can be admitted into the audience.
5.2.31Each selection committee member independently evaluates each of the three areas of focus,
with the three areas of focus being given equal weight2Each member records the result of
the selection interview on a point scale from 0 to 90, where 0 is the worst result and 90 is the
best result.4The number of points results from the arithmetic mean of the individual
evaluations.5Non-vanishing decimal places must be rounded up.
5.2.41The total score for the second stage is the sum of the points
0 - 90 points from 5.2.3 (selection interview),
0 - 50 points from 5.1.1.1 (technical qualification),
0 - 60 points from 5.1.1.2 (final grade).
2Anyone who has achieved 90 or more points has passed the aptitude test.3Applicants with
an overall rating of less than 90 points have not passed the aptitude test.

5.4 The established suitability applies to all subsequent applications for this course of study.
6. Documentation
1The process of the suitability procedure must be documented; In particular, the documentation
must show the names of the people involved in the decision, the assessment of the first and
second stages and the overall result.2A transcript of the aptitude interview must be made,
showing the day, duration and location of the assessment, the names of the selection
committee members, the names of the applicants and the key topics of the interview.
7. Repetition
Anyone who has not passed the aptitude test can register for the aptitude test again.
