3. Commission for the aptitude procedure, selection committees

3.11The aptitude procedure is carried out by the aptitude procedure commission and the selection
committees.2The commission for the aptitude procedure is responsible for preparing the
procedure, organizing it and ensuring a structured and standardized procedure for determining
suitability within the framework of these statutes; It is responsible unless another responsibility
is determined by these regulations or delegation.3The implementation of the procedure
according to No. 5 subject to No. 3.2. Sentence 11 is the responsibility of the selection
committees.
3.21The commission for the aptitude test consists of five members.2These are appointed by the dean
in consultation with the dean of studies from among the members of the Faculty of
Mathematics who are authorized to examine and who are involved in the course of study.3At
least three of the commission members must be university professors within the meaning of
the BayHSchPG.4The student council has the right to appoint a student representative who will
serve in an advisory capacity on the commission.5A deputy is appointed for each member of the
commission.6The commission elects a chairperson from among its members.7Article 31 of the
TUM Basic Regulations in the current version applies to the course of business.8thThe members'
term of office is one year.9Extensions of the term of office and reappointments are possible.10
The chairperson can make urgent decisions that cannot be postponed instead of the
commission on the aptitude test; He or she must inform the commission of this immediately.11
The study office supports the commission on the aptitude process and the selection
committees; The commission for the aptitude procedure can assign the study office the task of
the formal admission test in accordance with No. 4 as well as the assessment of points based on
previously defined criteria for which there is no scope for assessment, in particular the
conversion of the grade and the determination of the total number of points achieved.

3.31The selection committees each consist of two members from among the members of the Faculty of
Mathematics who are authorized to examine in the course of study in accordance with Article 62
Paragraph 1 Sentence 1 BayHSchG in conjunction with the University Examiner Ordinance.2At least
one member must be a university professor within the meaning of the BayHSchPG.3The activity as a
member of the commission for the aptitude test can be carried out in addition to the activity as a
member of the selection committee.4The members are appointed by the commission for the
aptitude test for six months; No. 3.2 Sentence 9 applies accordingly.5Different selection committees
can be appointed for each criterion and level.

4. Admission to the aptitude test

4.1 The implementation of the aptitude procedure requires that the documents mentioned in 2.2 are
present in full, on time and in the correct form.
4.21Anyone who meets the required requirements according to No. 4.1 will be examined in the aptitude
test according to No. 5.2Otherwise, a rejection notice will be issued with reasons and information on
legal remedies.

5. Carrying out the aptitude test

5.1First stage of carrying out the aptitude procedure
5.1.11Based on the written application documents required in accordance with No. 2.3, it will be
assessed whether the respective applicants are suitable for studying in accordance with No. 1
(first stage of carrying out the aptitude procedure).2The submitted documents are rated on a
scale of 0 to 120 points, where 0 is the worst and 120 is the best result:
16

The following evaluation criteria are included:

1.Professional qualifications
1The curricular analysis is not carried out through a schematic comparison of the modules,

but rather on the basis of competencies.2It is based on the elementary subject groups of
the Bachelor's degree program in Mathematics at the Technical University of Munich (at
least 27 credits) listed in the following table.3If it has been determined that there are no
significant differences in the acquired competencies (learning outcomes) for modules
amounting to at least 27 credits according to modules at the Technical University of
Munich, a maximum of 50 points will be awarded.
4Missing skills will be deducted from the score of 50 according to the credits of the
assigned modules of the Bachelor's degree program in Mathematics at the Technical
University of Munich, multiplied by a factor of 2.5Negative points are not awarded.

No. Module name Credits

MA0003 Calculus 3 9
MA0009 Introduction to probability theory and statistics 9

MA2006 Function theory 5

MA2011 geometry 9
MA2012 Introduction to optimization 9
MA3301 Numerics of differential equations 9
MA2404 Markov chains 5
MA3001 Functional analysis 9

2.Final grade
1For every tenth of a grade that the average calculated over 118 credits is better than 3.0,
3 points are awarded.2The maximum number of points is 60 points.3If a final certificate
with more than 140 credits is available at the time of application, the assessment will be
based on the best-graded modules totaling 118 credits.4It is the applicant's responsibility
to list these as part of the application and to ensure in writing that the information
provided is correct.5To the extent that this occurs, the average is calculated from the best
graded module examinations amounting to 118 credits; If this information is missing, the
overall average grade provided by the applicant will be used.

6The overall grade average is calculated as the weighted average of the graded modules
listed.7The grade weights of the individual modules correspond to the assigned credits.8th
When determining the grade, one decimal place is taken into account; all other decimal
places are deleted without rounding.
3.Letter of justification
1The written justification is evaluated on a scale of 0 to 10 points based on the examples

listed in 2.3.4.2The content of the letter of justification is evaluated according to the

following criteria:
1. Particular willingness to perform: The applicant has relevant qualifications that go
beyond the knowledge and qualifications acquired in the first degree, such as course-
specific vocational training, internships, stays abroad (see No. 2.3.3).

2. Interest: The applicant can present the connection between personal interests and the
content of the course in a structured manner.

3The two selection committee members independently evaluate each of the two criteria,
with the criteria being weighted equally.4The score is the arithmetic mean of the individual
ratings, rounded up to whole scores.
17

5.1.2 The score for the first level is the sum of the individual scores, rounded up to whole scores.

5.1.31Anyone who has achieved at least 55 points has passed the aptitude test.2In cases where it has
been determined that only individual technical requirements from the first degree program
are not met, the selection committee may require that basic examinations from the
bachelor's degree program in mathematics worth a maximum of 20 credits be taken.3These
basic examinations must be taken in the first year of study.4Failed basic examinations may
only be repeated once within this period at the next examination date.5The examination
board can make admission to individual module examinations dependent on passing the
basic examination.
5.1.4 Anyone who has achieved fewer than 45 points has not passed the aptitude test.

5.2.Second stage of carrying out the aptitude procedure

5.2.11The remaining applicants will be invited to a selection interview.
2As part of the second stage of the aptitude procedure, the qualifications acquired in the first
degree and the results of the selection interview are assessed.3The date for the aptitude
interview will be announced at least one week in advance.4Time windows for any aptitude
interviews to be carried out must be set before the application deadline expires.5The
applicants must adhere to the scheduled interview date.6If the application is justified and
approved by the commission, an aptitude interview via video conference is possible.7The
applicant bears the risk in the event of any technical problems, unless the Technical
University of Munich is responsible for these.8thAnyone who is unable to take part in the
aptitude interview for reasons beyond his or her control can, upon a justified request, receive
a follow-up appointment no later than two weeks before the start of lectures.

5.2.21The selection interview must be carried out individually for each applicant.2The interview lasts
at least 20 and a maximum of 30 minutes per applicant.3The content of the conversation
covers the following main topics:
1. Ability to work scientifically or in a fundamental and method-oriented manner,
2. existing specialist knowledge from your first degree (e.g. by outlining the solution to an
exemplary problem),
3. Applicants' insight into possible subject areas of the course as well as their particular
willingness to perform and motivation; The applicants are willing and able to educate
themselves independently beyond the classroom hours.
4The documents submitted in accordance with 2.3 may also be the subject matter.5Technical
knowledge that is only to be imparted in the Master's program in Mathematics in Science and
Engineering is not decisive.6With the consent of the applicants, a member of the group of
students can be admitted into the audience.

5.2.31Each selection committee member independently evaluates each of the three areas of focus,
with the three areas of focus being given equal weight2Each member records the result of
the selection interview on a point scale from 0 to 90, where 0 is the worst result and 90 is the
best result.4The number of points results from the arithmetic mean of the individual
evaluations.5Non-vanishing decimal places must be rounded up.
5.2.41The total score for the second stage is the sum of the points
0 - 90 points from 5.2.3 (selection interview),
0 - 50 points from 5.1.1.1 (technical qualification),
0 - 60 points from 5.1.1.2 (final grade).
2Anyone who has achieved 90 or more points has passed the aptitude test.3Applicants with
an overall rating of less than 90 points have not passed the aptitude test.
18

5.3Determination and announcement of the result

1The result of the aptitude test is determined based on the number of points achieved and
announced in a notification.2Rejection notices must be justified and provided with information
on legal remedies.

5.4 The established suitability applies to all subsequent applications for this course of study.

6. Documentation

1The process of the suitability procedure must be documented; In particular, the documentation
must show the names of the people involved in the decision, the assessment of the first and
second stages and the overall result.2A transcript of the aptitude interview must be made,
showing the day, duration and location of the assessment, the names of the selection
committee members, the names of the applicants and the key topics of the interview.

7. Repetition

Anyone who has not passed the aptitude test can register for the aptitude test again.
