Answer All Questions (60 Marks)

Question 1
a) Determine the maximum period an ‘energy saver’ bulb rated 14W can operate off a 12V
rechargeable battery with a capacity of 7Ah. [3]

b) The resistance of a copper wire is 0.8Ω at 20˚C. The temperature coefficient of

resistance of copper at 20˚C is 0.00393. Find its resistance at 65˚C. [3]

c) The starter motor in a car is connected to the battery using two 50cm long copper
connecting wires. The resistivity of copper is 1.72 × 10-8Ωm. The starter motor takes
100A. The voltage drop across the wires must not exceed 1V. Determine the minimum
diameter required for the wires. [5]
