OBJECTIVES
1. Define Empowerment and Advocacy

2. Describe the significance importance of Commitment and


Action in Participatory Development for community well-
being.
3. Promote Empowerment and Advocacy of a specific
community Action.
EMPOWERMENT
Empowerment is the act of giving somebody more
control over their own life or the situation they are
in or giving somebody the power or authority to do
something.
- It is the process of increasing personal,
interpersonal and political power so that individuals
can take actions to improve their life situations.

This can be attained by a person who can directly control what is
happening in their own lives.

they need to live better and dignified lives.

EMPOWERMENT AND COMMUNITY
ACTION
• In connection with community action, people empowerment is the
process that increase community autonomy and individual self-
determination. These processes are designed to help gain control of
their own lives.
As stated by Ban Ki Moon, Former Secretary of the United Nations, this
aims to ensure that people have the right set of skills and opportunities
they need to live better and dignified lives.
ADVOCACY
•Advocacy is the support, advice and help given to
people, often with special needs or aims, who are unable
to speak for themselves.
- It refers to enabling marginalized groups and promoting
their individual rights. It is a process of supporting people
and advancing or promoting the rights these individuals
have.
ADVOCACY AND EMPOWERMENT
• These two are both modes of community engagement. It highlights the collaborative
nature of various groups and people working together to attain a specific goal that
may promote betterment of the quality of life and social change.
Advocacy ,in connection with community engagement,also means attaining people
empowerment. It can be led by people who are not part of the community or by leaders
within the community. The most effective advocacy and people empowerment is the
combination by both..
Empowering sectors like the poor, indigenous people and the like needs strong and
effective advocacies for protection and promotion of their interests

• Commitment includes dedication of certain person or a cause.
• Commitment obligated a person to do something that involves
action.
• Commitment is very important to accomplish a certain
community action initiative with participation of the citizens.
COMMUNITY COMMITMENT
• Is the psychological bond between community members and their community.
1. Commitment fosters camaraderie, trust, and caring -- the stuff a group
needs to keep it going for the long run. If people are committed to an effort
for a period of time, they will learn what they need to know to be more
effective.
2. A community is a familiar thread used to bring people to advocate and
support each in the fight to overcome those threats. As human beings, we need
a sense of belonging, and that sense of belonging is what connects us to the
many relationships we develop.
THEIR ATRIBUTES OF A PARTICIPATORY
FOR COMMUNITY WELL-BEING
• A participatory approach helps to ensure the
ownership and commitment of the communities involved.
Active participation by local citizens and other
shareholders aims to enhance both the quality and
relevance of the suggested intervention.
1. CONNECTEDNESS
• Social connectedness is the deagree to which people have and perceive a
desired number, quality, and diversity of relationships that create a sense of
belonging, and being cared for, valued, and supported.

2. LIVABILITY
• is the sum of the factors that add up to a
community's quality of life - including the built and
natural environment, economic prosperity, social
stability and equity, educational, and cultural,
entertainment and recreation possibilities.
3. EQUITY
• Is the idea that some groups and individuals need to added
support to remove barriers that could be holding them back.
a. Employees that feel respected by their organisation are
more likely to enjoy their job
b. Reach out to help their colleagues.
c. Ultimately produce better work
PARTICIPATORY DEVELOPMENT
• aims to engage the marginalized and initiative for
their own benefits.
• It is guided by the possibility of success and
sustainable of development projects that are more
attainable if the local community is engaged in the
process of development.
FORMS OF PARTICIPATORY DEVELOPMENT
1.Passive Participation - Participation is the minimum; Stakeholders are merely informed
about the plans and progress of projects.
2. Participation by Consultation - Stakeholders being asked for their idea or opinion about
a certain problem while development professionals only listen to their views.
3. Participation by Collaboration - Stakeholders with
predetermined goals participates during the discussion, analysis,and decision-making
stage.
• All of these are types of participation, it is essential to develop Empowerment
participation.
MANIFESTATION OF PUBLIC PARTICIPATION ON
THE DEVELOPMENT
• Public participation increases the likelihood that actions taken or
services provided by public agencies adequately reflect the needs of
the people and that the benefits of development are equitably
shared.
CHARACTERISTICS OF HEALTH
COMMUNITY
• The health of a community is dependent
not only upon the genetics of its residents,
but also upon the environment within
which those individuals live. A person’s health is
a product of their environment. As such, a healthy
community is one in which all residents have
access to a quality education, safe and healthy
homes, adequate employment, transportation,
physical activity, and nutrition, in addition to quality
health care.
