1. (a) 0.3454g of an organic compound Q on complete combustion yielded
0.9812g of carbon dioxide and 0.2331g of water.
In another experiment, 0.3454g of the same compound yielded 41.5cm3
of nitrogen measured at 0◦C and 760mmHg pressure.
Calculate the empirical formula of Q. (31/2 marks)
(b) Q was steam distilled at 98◦C and 101.32kPa pressure and the distillate
was found to contain 27.9% by mass Q. the vapour pressure of water
at 98◦C is 94.260kPa. Determine the molecular formula of Q and write
its molecular structure. (51/2 marks)
(c) Using equations show how Q
(i) can be converted to cyclohexene. (51/2 marks)
(ii) can be prepared from benzoic acid. (03 marks)
(d) State what would be observed and write an equation for the reaction
when bromine water is added to compound Q. (21/2 marks)

3. (a) (i) Describe how the molecular mass of a substance can be determined
using freezing point depression method.
(Diagram not required) (06 marks)
(ii) Explain why the method you have described in (a)(i) is not suitable
for determining the molecular mass of a polymer. (02 marks)
(b) A solution contains 1.54g of naphthalene, C10 H8 in 18g of camphor
freezes at 148.3◦C. Calculate the freezing point constant of camphor
(the freezing point of camphor is 175◦C). (04 marks)

(c) The following results of melting point were obtained when 1g of
camphor and solid W were mixed.

4. Name a reagent that can be used to distinguish between each of the following

is used.
(a) But-2-yne and but-1-yne.
(b) Phenylamine and trimethylamine.
(c) 2-Bromopropane and 2-chloropropane.
(d) 2-Methylpropan-2-ol and propan-2-ol.
(e) Methanol and ethanol.
(f) Benzaldehyde and phenylethanone (20 marks)
5. Carbon, silicon, tin and lead are elements of Group IV of the Periodic Table.
(a) Write the electronic configuration of the outermost energy level of
Group IV elements. (01 mark )

(ii) oxides of the elements react with sodium hydroxide. (08 marks)
(c) Dilute nitric acid was added to red lead (Pb3 O4 ) and the mixture
warmed.

(d) The resultant mixture in (c) above was filtered and the residue was
added to a solution of manganese(II) sulphate followed by few drops
concentrated nitric acid and the mixture warmed.
