SECTION A:
Attempt any three questions from this section

1. (a) (i) With the aid of a labelled diagram briefly describe how standard
electrode potential of copper electrode can be determined

(ii) The electrode potentials of Aluminium and copper are given below
Cu2+(Aq) + 2e Cu(s), E = +0.34V

Al (aq) + 3e Al(s), E = –1.66V

Write a cell convention for the cell made up of half cells and hence determine the
e.m.f of the cell (2 marks)

(b) Sketch a graph to show the conductivity change during the titration of 0.01M
ethanoic acid with 0.1M sodium hydroxide. Explain the shape of the graph
(5 marks)

(c) The table below gives the molar conductivity of an aqueous solution of ethanoic
acid at 298k.

Calculate:
(i) the degree of ionisation, α of 0.01M ethanoic acid (2 marks)
(ii) The pH when the solution in (i) is diluted 10 times (4 marks)

2. (a) The rate equation for the reaction 2A + 4B + 2x X2 + 2Y + 2Z is given by


Rate = K [A] [X] [B]2,where K is the rate constant.
How would the rate of the reaction be altered if:
(i) [B] and [X] were kept constant but [A] doubled? 1 ½ marks)
(ii) [X] and [A] were kept constant but [B] halved. (1 ½ marks}
(iii) [X] and [A] were kept constant but [B] doubled (1 ½ marks)
(iv) The concentration of all species were doubled (1 ½ marks)

(b) In the presence of an acid sucrose is converted into a mixture of glucose and
fructose according to the equation

(i) the order of reaction
(ii) the rate of constant for the reaction at 25oC (1 ½ marks)
(iii) the rate of reaction when the concentration of sucrose is
0.12 Mol.dm– 3 (1 mark)

(c) The iodination of propanone takes place in the presence of an acid and the
reaction is first order with respect to propanone and zero order with respect to
iodine. Briefly describe an experiment to show that the order of reaction with
respect to iodine is zero (8 marks)

3. (a) State what would be observed and write equation for the reaction which takes place
when dilute sodium hydroxide solution is added dropwise until in excess to
(i) Ni2+(aq)
(ii) Mn2+ (aq)
(iii) Sn4+ (aq) (8 marks)

(b) Explain the following observations


(i) Lead II chloride is insoluble in ethanol whereas lead(iv) chloride readily
dissolves in the same solvent

(ii) When water is added to lead (iv) chloride white fumes are observed and a
brown precipitate is formed (3 marks)
(iii) Lead (IV) chloride readily decomposes to lead (II) chloride and chlorine
when heated but lead (II) chloride is not affected by heat
(2 ½ marks)
(iv) Carbon, which is in the same group as lead in the periodic table shows one
valency of 4 in its compounds but lead shows two valencies of 2 and 4
( 2 ½ marks)

(v) The solubilities of lead (II) halides increase in the order

4. (a) A certain compound A has molecular formula C3H8O. Write the structural formulae
and IUPAC names of all possible isomers of A (3 marks)

(b) A reacts with iodine solution in the presence of aqueous solution of sodium
hydroxide to forma yellow precipitate.
(i) Identify A (1 mark)

(ii) Write a balanced equation for the reaction between A and iodine solution in
the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide solution ( 1½ marks)

(iii) State what would be observed if A was reacted with phosphorus


Pentachloride and write equation for the reaction. Name the main organic
product. (3 marks)

(c) Compound A was heated with acidified potassium dichromate solution to give
compound B. Dilute sodium hydroxide solution was then reacted with compound B
at room temperature to give compound C.

(i) State what was observed when A was heated with acidified potassium
dichromate solution and write the equation for the reaction that took place
(2 marks)
(ii) Write equation for the reaction between B and dilute sodium hydroxide
solution and name the compound C formed according to the IUPAC system.
(2 marks)
(iii) Give a mechanism for the reaction in (C) (ii) above (3 marks)

(d) Using equations, show how A can be converted to amino ethane

5. (a) Using equations, show how the following compounds can be synthesised

(i) C – CH3 COOH

(b) Name the pairs of functional groups that can be distinguished using the following
reagents. In each case state what would be observed if each member of the pair is
separately treated with the reagent
(i) Ammoniacal silver nitrate solution
(ii) Iron(III)chloride solution

6. Explain each of the following observations (Use equations to illustrate your answer
where necessary)
(a) Alkenes undergo electrophilic addition reaction whereas carbonyl compounds
undergo nucleophilic addition reaction.
(6 marks)
(b) When ammonia solution is added to silver nitrate dropwise until in excess a brown
precipitate is formed which dissolves in excess ammonia to give a colourless
solution (3 marks)

(c) The boiling point of ethanol is 78oC where as that of methoxymethane boils at –
24oC (4 marks)

(d) Methanoic acid reacts with ammoniacal silver nitrate solution whereas ethanoic
acid does not (4 marks)

(e) The reactivity of a metal increases as one goes down the group but that of a
halogen decreases as one goes down the group (3 marks)

7. (a) write the formulae of two ores of copper


(b) (i) suggest one method by which the ores may be concentrated. (1 marks)
(ii) Outline, giving equations, the process by which impure copper is obtained from
its ore (6 marks)
(c) (i) Name the method by which impure copper is purified
(ii) Describe giving equations, the process of purification of copper in (i) above
( 4 marks)

(d) Give two large scale uses of copper ((1 mark)

(e) (i) State what would be observed and write equation for the reaction when copper
metal is added to concentrated nitric acid (3 ½ marks)
(ii) Using equations only show how the product in (i) above can be used to prepare
copper (II) sulphate (2 ½ marks)

8. The boiling point of methanol is 63oC and that of cyclohexane is 69oC. The table below
shows the mole fractions of methanol in liquid mixture and in vapour above the mixture
varying with boiling point of the solution of methanol and cyclohexane.

(i) Plot a boiling point –composition diagram for the above data. [use a scale of 2 cm
to represent 0.2 mole fraction on the horizontal axis and 2cm to represent 10 oC on
the vertical axis]. Label your graph completely.

(iii) Explain what happens when liquid mixture containing 0.1 mole fraction of
cyclohexane is fractionally distilled (3 marks)

(b) A liquid compound X which is immiscible with water forms an aqueous mixture that
boils at 97oC at a pressure of 101 KPa. The vapour pressure of water at that
temperature is 96kPa
(i) Explain why the mixture of X
(b.p = 105o) and water (B.P = 100oC) boils at 97oC (2 marks)

(ii) If the relative molecular mass of X is 125, calculate the percentage composition
of X in the distillate (4 marks)

(c) 100 cm3 of an aqueous solution containing 10g of a compound Q was shaken with
100cm3 of benzene . Q is more soluble in benzene than in water and the partition
coefficient of Q between benzene and water is 12.2
Calculate the mass of Q left in the aqueous layer. (3 marks)
