LINUX

Linux began in 1991 as a personal project by Finnish student Linus

Torvald: to create a new free operating system kernel. The
resulting Linux kernel has been marked by constant growth throughout
its history. Since the initial release of its of source code in 1991, it has
grown from a small number of C files under a license prohibiting
commercial distribution to the 4.15 version in 2018 with more than 23.3

million lines of source code.

Linux has been around since the mid-1990s and has since
reached a user-base that spans the globe. Linux is actually
ev erywhere: It’s in your phones, your thermostats, in your cars,
refrigerators, Roku dev ices, and telev isions. It also runs most of the
Internet, all of the world’s top 500 supercomputers, and the
world’s stock exchanges.

But besides being the platform of choice to run desktops, serv ers,
and embedded systems across the globe, Linux is one of the
most reliable, secure and worry-free operating systems av ailable.

WHAT IS LINUX?
• Linux is a Unix-like, open source and
community-developed operating system for
computers, servers, mainframes, mobile
devices and embedded devices. It is
supported on almost every major computer
platform including x86, ARM and SPARC,
making it one of the most widely supported
operating systems.
DESCRIPTION OF THE FEATURES
• Linux is very similar to other operating systems due to
having basic features such as graphical interface and
softwares such as photo editors, video editors, word
processors, etc. but features that make it truly stand out are:
• It is an open- source software- due to it being as such
anyone from anywhere is free to view, edit or contribute
to the software
• It is customizable- although the core pieces of the Linux
operating system are generally common, there are
many distributions of Linux, which include different
software options. Thus it being incredibly customizable,
because a whole range of applications can be swapped
out. Linux users also can choose core components, such
as which system displays graphics, and other user-
interface components. With this feature, it can be
tailored to the user's liking
