Features
• These are the main features of Linux:
• Free. Linux is a completely free operating system. In addition, it has multiple different distributions, so that each user
can choose the system that best suits their needs.
• Open source and independent. Any professional can develop and distribute new functions, without the need for prior
permissions or protocols. Also, the new functions can be private software or paid software like SQL Server by Microsoft
or Red Hat which works with another enterprises. This speeds up the appearance of improvements and updates.
• Very stable. Linux is considered one of the most stable and robust operating systems. For this reason, it is the most
widely used in servers that have to remain always on.
• Highly secure. As it is free software, computer criminals have little interest in developing viruses for Linux. In addition,
its architecture makes it difficult for malware to appear and makes it easy to eliminate any threat.
• Multitasking and multi-user. The power of this system makes it possible to run numerous programs and applications at
the same time. It also allows multiple users to access its resources simultaneously and securely.
Tux
• Tux, the Linux’s logo was created in 1996
by Larry Ewing in a contest organizated by
Linus Torvald. The rules to create it were to
use a linux computer and GIMP, an imaging
application.
• Every Linux’s version has his own version
of Tux.
• There are two origins for the name, one that
looks like the penguin is in a tuxedo,
abbreviated tux, and the second is Torvalds'
Unix.
Fun Facts
• The creation of Linux was a hobby for Linus
Torvalds. While he was at the university, he
read a book “Design of the Unix Operating
System”. He was not convinced by the way it
was made and created his own.
• There are Tux’s statue in Tyumen, Russia
• More than 60% of cloud images and almost a
third of virtual machines are based on Linux. In
addition, Amazon Web Services, IBM Cloud
and Google Cloud Platform offer several Linux
distributions in their publicly available images.

distributions.

• Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL): Provides a flexible and stable foundation to support hybrid
cloud innovation. Its lastest version is 9.38
