BEHAVIOR OF
DUCTILE
MATERIAL
Elastic Behavior
This steel specimen clearly shows the necking that occurred just
before the specimen failed. This resulted in the formation of a “cup-
cone” shape at the fracture location, which is characteristic of
ductile materials.
• BRITTLE MATERIAL GOOD IN COMPRESSION & WEAK IN TENSION e.g.
concrete
• DUCTILE MATERIAL STRONG IN TENSION & WEAK IN COMPRESSION
e.g. steel
