SERIES-PARALLEL CIRCUIT

OBJECTIVES

1. To learn how to connect a series-parallel circuit.

2. To calculate and measure the equivalent resistance in a series-parallel circuit.
3. To calculate and measure the individual currents and individual voltages as well as
the total current and total voltage in a series-parallel circuit.

INSTRUMENTS and MATERIALS

DC Power Supply
DC Voltmeter
DC Milliammeter
VOM
Bread board
Resistors (220 , 680  and 1000 )
Connecting Wires

PROCEDURE

1. Connect the circuit shown in Figure 7.1. DO NOT switch on yet.

2. Calculate the value of the total current, total resistance and the individual currents and
voltages. Record the data in the Table.
3. Switch on the power supply and measure the total current by connecting the
milliammeter in series with the source as shown in Figure 7.2. Record the data in the
Table.
4. Measure the individual currents as shown in Figure 7.3 and record the data in the
Table.
5. Measure the individual voltages as shown in Figure 7.4 and record the data in the
Table.
6. Disconnect the circuit from the supply and measure the total resistance using your
VOM. Record the data in the Table.

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

1. Get the percent error of the equivalent resistance from the Table using the formula

% Error = Measured Value - Calculated Value x 100

Calculated Value
2. In the circuit shown in Figure 7.5, calculate the unknown currents and voltages.
