28 CHAPTER 5. THE ARCTIC JOURNEY
Today, the majority of Norway is a rugged topography with rich forested valleys and mountains and some of the few remaining ice age glaciers. In fact Norway
is home to the largest glacier on the continental European landmass, Jostedalsbreen. In the far northeast above the Arctic Circle, frozen arctic tundra dominates
the landscape, from Vardo, south and west. This tundra receives little precipitation and has a short growing season, so it is generally a treeless plain of low
shrubs and grasses.
• Glacial Landform Features:
1. U-Shaped Valley: The most prominent feature is the U-shaped valley. Unlike the V-shaped valleys created by rivers, glacial valleys have a wider,
flat bottom and steep, often vertical, sides. This U-shape is a result of the immense weight and movement of glaciers, which carve and widen the
valley floor while scraping and scouring the sides.
2. Cirque: At the head of the U-shaped valley, you might find a cirque. This is a bowl-shaped depression formed by a smaller glacier or tributary
branch. Cirque walls are typically steep and may contain waterfalls if hanging valleys are present.

3. Hanging Valleys: These are smaller valleys carved by tributary glaciers that enter the main valley at a higher elevation. Due to the deepening of
the main valley by the larger glacier, these hanging valleys appear to be ”hanging” above the main fjord and often discharge water as waterfalls.
4. Moraines: These are ridges or mounds of sediment deposited by the glacier at different points in its movement. There are various types of moraines,
including:

5. Fjord: Fjords are among the most striking and iconic features of glacial landscapes. They are formed through a combination of glacial activity and
sea-level changes. Initially, a fjord begins as a U-shaped valley carved by the relentless movement of glaciers over thousands of years. These glaciers,
often originating high in the mountains, exert tremendous pressure on the underlying rock as they advance and retreat, scouring the valley walls and
floor.
As the glaciers retreat due to warming temperatures or other environmental factors, the valleys they leave behind become submerged by rising sea
levels or glacial meltwater. This process, known as marine submergence, transforms the once-dry valley into a fjord, allowing seawater to flood the
lower reaches of the valley. The result is a spectacular landscape characterized by steep, towering cliffs that plunge into deep, narrow inlets filled with
saltwater.
Fjords typically exhibit a distinctive morphology, with sheer rock walls rising vertically from the water’s edge to towering heights above. The steep
gradients of the fjord walls often reflect the depth of glacial erosion that occurred during the ice age, while the narrow width of the inlet emphasizes
the confined nature of the original valley. The floor of a fjord is usually submerged beneath the water, forming a deep basin that may support diverse
marine ecosystems.
One of the most remarkable aspects of fjords is their geological and ecological diversity. The interplay between freshwater run-off from surrounding
mountains and the inflow of seawater creates unique habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna. Fjords are often home to rich biodiversity, including
marine mammals, fish, seabirds, and coastal vegetation. Additionally, the sheltered nature of fjords provides a sanctuary for wildlife and a haven for
recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and kayaking.
Overall, fjords represent a captivating blend of geological history, natural beauty, and ecological significance. As enduring symbols of the dynamic
interplay between glaciers and the sea, they continue to inspire awe and wonder in all who encounter them, serving as both a testament to the power
of nature and a reminder of the delicate balance that sustains our planet’s ecosystems.

Fjords Beyond Norway Fjords can be found in various parts of the world besides Norway. For example, New Zealand is renowned for its stunning fjords,
particularly in the South Island’s Fiordland region. Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound are two famous fjords in New Zealand, known for their majestic beauty,
sheer cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. Similarly, Chilean Patagonia boasts remarkable fjords along its coastline, including the awe-inspiring landscapes of the
Chilean Fjords and the Beagle Channel. These fjords offer visitors breathtaking views of rugged mountains, dense forests, and pristine waters, providing a
glimpse into the dynamic forces of nature that have shaped these remarkable landscapes over millennia. While fjords outside of Norway may vary in geological
composition and ecosystem, they share the characteristic features of steep cliffs, narrow waterways, and deep, glacially-carved valleys, offering visitors unparalleled
opportunities for exploration and adventure.

4. Fjords in Norway:
Depth: Norwegian fjords tend to be deeper than those in other regions. Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway, reaches a depth of over 2,500 meters
(8,202 ft), while most other fjords are shallower.
Shape: Some fjords have straighter walls, while others have more sinuous, branching shapes. This variation depends on the pre-existing valleys that were carved
by the glaciers.
Marine Life: The specific marine life found in fjords can vary depending on factors like water temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels. However, fjords often
provide a unique habitat for various marine species, including fish, crustaceans, and marine mammals.

”In the midst of the wild waves, between heaven and earth, lies Lofoten, a chain of mountains rising perpendicularly from the ocean. Their snow-capped peaks
tower into the clouds; their sides are rent by narrow sounds and deep fjords. Among these mountains lies the little fishing village of Sund, a group of wooden
houses built up the mountain’s side and surrounded by tall, slender birches, sheltered by the mountains from the sweeping winds of the ocean.”

Returning to Berlevåg around the same time at night may indeed offer a similar experience to your previous visit, but there could also be notable differences
depending on factors such as weather conditions and seasonal changes. Comparing your notes from the previous visit to Berlevåg could provide insights into
what to expect this time around.
If your previous visit to Berlevåg was marked by cloudy skies or poor visibility, you may have missed out on certain activities or scenic views. Returning to clear
skies could offer a completely different perspective, allowing you to appreciate the stunning Arctic landscape and possibly catch sight of the Northern Lights
if conditions are favourable. Conversely, if your previous visit coincided with clear skies and optimal conditions for outdoor activities, returning to cloudy or
inclement weather may limit your options for exploration.
Additionally, consider any local events or activities that may be taking place during your return visit to Berlevåg. Whether it’s a cultural festival, community
gathering, or special event, these factors could contribute to a unique experience that differs from your previous visit.
Overall, while there may not be significant changes in terms of the time of day and general atmosphere, paying attention to weather forecasts and local events
can help you anticipate any differences and make the most of your return trip to Berlevåg.

Returning to Havøysund at the same time as the first visit, with the possibility of differing weather conditions such as cloud cover, can lead to varied experiences.
Here’s what you might expect:
1. Similar Scenery: The landscape of Havøysund is likely to be familiar, offering picturesque views of the surrounding coastal scenery, rugged cliffs, and the

• Experimenting with various focal lengths offers diverse perspectives and compositions.
Remember:
• Sturdy tripods are essential, especially for longer focal lengths.
• Remote shutter releases or self-timers minimize camera shake.
With these tips and a bit of luck, capture the magic of the Northern Lights dancing across the Arctic sky, creating stunning memories and breathtaking
photographs.
Note:
The phrase ”Shutter speeds (seconds-long)” refers to the duration for which the camera’s shutter remains open when taking a photograph. In the context
of capturing the Northern Lights, using ”seconds-long” shutter speeds means setting the exposure time to several seconds or even longer.
When photographing the Northern Lights, using longer shutter speeds allows the camera to capture the dynamic movements of the lights as they dance
across the sky. This extended exposure time enables the camera to collect more light, resulting in a brighter and more detailed image of the Aurora
Borealis.
However, it’s essential to strike a balance with the shutter speed. While longer exposures can produce stunning images of the Northern Lights, excessively
long shutter speeds may cause unwanted motion blur in the final photograph, especially if there is any movement in the scene or if the camera is not
securely mounted on a tripod.
Therefore, by using ”shutter speeds (seconds-long),” photographers can effectively capture the mesmerizing movement and vibrant colours of the Northern
Lights while maintaining image sharpness and clarity.

Camera Gear
6.1 Introduction
Choosing the right camera gear for a voyage through the stunning landscapes of Norway is crucial for capturing memorable moments with clarity and precision. In
this chapter, we explore the key features of the Sony a7 IV camera and the Tamron 28-200mm lens, along with suggested camera settings for optimal performance
in various lighting conditions.
6.2 Sony a7 IV
The Sony a7 IV is a versatile full-frame mirror-less camera designed for photographers and videographers seeking high-resolution imaging capabilities and advanced
performance. With its 33-megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor and Bionz XR processor, the a7 IV delivers stunning image quality and impressive low-light performance.
The camera features 759 autofocus points, ensuring fast and accurate focusing even in challenging shooting scenarios. Additionally, the 5-axis in-body image
stabilization system minimizes camera shake, allowing for sharp handheld shots.

6.4. SUGGESTED CAMERA SETTINGS FOR CAPTURING THE NORTHERN LIGHTS 249
ISO:
• Starting point: Begin with an ISO of 3200 as a baseline. This balances capturing the faint aurora with managing noise in the image.
• Adjusting based on conditions: If the aurora is particularly vibrant, you can lower the ISO to reduce noise. Conversely, for fainter auroras, gradually
increase the ISO while monitoring noise levels. Aim to strike a balance between capturing the aurora and keeping noise acceptable.
Aperture:
• Maximize light gathering: Use the widest aperture available on your lens throughout the focal length range. With the Tamron 28-200mm lens, this
translates to f/2.8 at the wide end and f/5.6 at the telephoto end. This allows more light to enter the camera, crucial for capturing the faint aurora.
Shutter Speed:
• Balance sharpness and motion blur: Aim for a shutter speed between 1/2 to 10 seconds. This range captures both the detailed structure of the aurora
and some of its movement.
• Experiment and adjust: Start with a slower shutter speed like 5 seconds and adjust based on the intensity of the aurora. Faster aurora movement might
require a faster shutter speed (closer to 1/2 second) to minimize blur. Conversely, a slower-moving aurora can benefit from a longer shutter speed (closer
to 10 seconds) to capture more detail.
Additional Tips:
• Manual mode is recommended: Take control of your camera settings by shooting in Manual mode. This allows you to fine-tune ISO, aperture, and
shutter speed for optimal results.
• Use a tripod: While you can experiment with handheld shooting, a sturdy tripod or a fixed platform as a support, ensures sharp images, especially at
slower shutter speeds.
• Focus on infinity: Set your lens focus to infinity to ensure the aurora and landscape are sharp in your images.
• White balance: Experiment with different white balance settings (e.g., auto, daylight, or custom) to achieve the desired color temperature in your final
images.
By understanding these settings and experimenting based on the specific conditions, you can capture the breathtaking beauty of the Northern Lights and create
lasting memories of your Norwegian adventure.
