1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of this document is to lay down the procedures for checking and approving the
documents prepared by the Civil / Structural Group in India operations.

2.0 SCOPE

This Work Instruction (WI) covers checking and approval of following types of documents

1) Design Calculation

2) Drawings

3) Enquiry Documents

4) Subcontracted Work

3.0 DEFINITIONS

4.0 METHOD

4.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

All checking shall include review for compliance with the relevant sections of the Work Instructions,
Project Specific Design Information, Design Guide, Codes of Practice and Standard Specifications. All
the review / checking lists in 4.2.2, 4.3.2 & 4.3.3 may be supplemented by additional items, if required.

In addition to checking the matter presented, a review shall be made to check whether all required
items / details have been included.

The colours to be used during checking and back drafting shall be in accordance with ASIA-SOP-202
clause 4.5.3

Checkprints shall be retained as stipulated in ASIA-SOP-202 clause 4.5.3.

Checking and Approval authorization shall be as per signatory authorization given in ASIA-SOP-202
or in Project Procedure.

4.2 CHECKING DESIGN CALCULATIONS

4.2.1 General

Checking of design calculations shall be carried out to ensure that the design fulfills the required
functions, is accurate and conforms to the norms laid down in IND-WI-C-01 & 02 as well as accepted
practice.

4.2.2 Checklist for Checking the Design Calculations

All design calculations shall be checked for:

a) Conformity with IND-WI-C-01 & 02


b) Loads and load combinations.
c) Adequacy of structure / members by both strength and serviceability criteria.
d) Overall stability and load path to supports.
e) Arithmetic accuracy of some selected calculations.
f) Adequacy of design for handling, transportation, erection and test conditions, wherever
required.
g) Economical choice of structural configuration and materials.
h) Joint strength.
i) Presentation of structural loadings to be applied to foundations (where foundation design is by
others).
j) Validation status of programs used, model geometry and deflected shapes, where analysis /
design is carried out by computer.

After completion of checking, the checker shall fill in; sign and file the calculation cover sheet as per
Attachment 7.46 and a copy of design assumptions form if applicable ( Design Assumption form as
per attchment 7.4 of IND-WI-C-07).

4.3 CHECKING OF DRAWINGS

4.3.1 General

Checking of drawings shall be carried out to ensure that they convey the required information in a
comprehensive and unambiguous manner, are accurate and follow good engineering practice. The
Engineer who has designed the structure/ unit shall preferably carry out the checking. If the checker is
not associated with the project, he shall obtain project specific information from the lead engineer.

4.3.2 Checklist for checking drawings

Drawings shall be checked for the following, as applicable:

a) Containing, as far as possible, only such items of work as have been covered in the schedule
of items of the relevant enquiry document / contract so that extra items are minimized.
b) Implementation of design philosophy.
c) Compliance with statutory regulations
d) Agreement of member sizes and details with design calculations.
e) Correctness of reinforcement location and density in reinforcement drawings.
f) Correctness of welding details shown including notation and agreement of connection details
with design calculations in fabrication drawings.
g) Mention of items of work not in Civil / Structural Contractor's Scope of work.
h) Indication of member forces on Structural GAs where connection design is by Sub-contractor
/ fabricator.
i) Inclusion of notes on construction sequence / procedure / precautions, where required.
j) Conformity with IND-WI-C-03 & 04.
k) Inclusion of MTO, Bill of Materials, Schedule of Doors & Windows, Schedule of finishes to
floors and walls and Area Statement, as applicable.
l) Completeness of reference to relevant specifications and drawings.
m) Correctness of location, Orientation and level.

n) Dimensional accuracy.
o) Correctness of location and size of embedments, pockets and anchor bolts. Sufficient
clearance between anchor bolts and reinforcements.
p) Inclusion of details of anchor bolts & embedments, if not as per standards. Sufficiency of
projected and threaded lengths of anchor bolts.
q) Correctness of Title block including scale, revision description and number, date, title
accuracy, etc.
r) HOLD list as per ASIA-SOP-202.

4.3.3 Checklist of documents for checking drawings

Drawings shall be checked against the following documents, as applicable:

a) Plot plans, Site Grading plans and Equipment Layouts.


b) Electrical, Instrumentation, Air-conditioning System and Architectural drawings for their layout
and detailed requirements.
c) Equipment Data Sheets or Equipment Vendors' drawings.
d) Related Civil Group drawings.
e) Commented prints returned from other groups.
f) Client’s comments.
g) Document Index.
h) Any special instructions in letter, memo or Minutes of Meeting form.

After completion of checking, the checker shall fill in, sign and file forms as per Attachment 7.1, 7.2,
and 7.3 as applicable.

4.4 CHECKING OF ENQUIRY DOCUMENTS

The special conditions shall clearly state the exact scope and time schedule envisaged. It shall be
checked to ensure that there is no conflict with the general conditions.

Every enquiry document shall be checked for inclusion of specifications for all the items of work
contained in its schedule of items.

Availability of estimation basis and record of estimation sheets used in the preparation of the enquiry
shall be checked.

The schedule of items / BOQ shall be checked for the following:

a) Description of items of work shall be complete in respect of activities, stated in proper


sequence and specification of materials, tools and equipment and shall not in anyway conflict
with the specifications.
b) All items of work required to execute the full scope of the enquiry shall be included. The
indicated quantity shall be accurate to within + 15% the estimate.
c) While specifying proprietary construction techniques /materials generic name/ description
should be used in addition to the brand name.
d) Free / at cost issues of materials / equipment / services (power & water) by client / owner
shall be clearly specified.
e) Provision of space for labour colony by client / owner shall be mentioned.
f) Choice of units shall be such that difficulties in measurement / payment are avoided.
g) A quantity shall appear against all items. Item rates shall not be asked for, as far as possible.

After completion of checking, the checker shall fill in, sign and file form as per Attachment 7.5.

4.5 CHECKING OF SUBCONTRACTED WORK

All subcontracted work shall be checked for the followings

a) Conformity with IND-WI-C-01, 02, 03 & 04 Drafting Standards.

b) Proper planning of drawings in respect of distribution of information, freedom from congestion,
sizing and placing of details.
c) Submission of checkprints checked as per Jacobs procedures.
d) "Checked by" signatures on drawings and design calculations.
e) All critical areas / items.
f) Entire submission, if a high incidence of errors is revealed during checking of critical
items.
g) For any specific requirements of SOPs.
h) All the subcontracted work documents shall be approved by Discipline Lead or higher
authority

4.6 RESPONSIBILITY

Checkers shall become jointly responsible with the originators for the complete contents of the
documents checked by them.

6.0 RECORDS

The check forms provided in this Work Instruction are complementary to the SOP requirements.
Final Check prints and Check forms shall be maintained and stored appropriately as per Contract
requirements.
