Q9.

A scientist prepared the following mixtures:

• 15 g cellulose with 0.2 mol dm–3 endocellulase
• 15 g cellulose with 0.2 mol dm–3 exocellulase
• 15 g cellulose with 0.2 mol dm–3 endocellulase and 0.2 mol dm−3
exocellulase.

The mixtures had identical total volumes. She determined the mass of cellulose
remaining after 48 hours.

Her results are shown in the table.

Mass of cellulose remaining / g

Time / hours Endocellulase +
Endocellulase Exocellulase
exocellulase

48 11.9 14.8 9.2

(c) Use information from the table to calculate the rate of digestion of cellulose
when both enzymes are present.

Give your answer in g min–1 and in standard form.

Show your working.

Answer = ____________________ g min–1

(2)

(e) The scientist could have expressed her results as the percentage loss in
mass of cellulose.

In the space, write the equation for calculating the percentage loss in
mass.

Q10. (c) Some students investigated the effect of temperature on the rate of anaerobic
respiration in yeast. The apparatus they used is shown in the diagram. The yeast
suspension was mixed with glucose solution and the volume of gas collected in five minutes
was recorded.

(ii) At 30 °C, one student obtained the following results.

Result 1 Result 2 Result 3

Volume of gas collected
in 5 minutes / cm3
38.3 27.6 29.4

Calculate the mean rate of gas production. Give your answer in cm3
s–1.

Answer ____________________ cm3 s–1

Q13.
Scientists measured the rate of carbon dioxide release by three groups of insects
of the same species at 10 °C, 20 °C and 30 °C. They also determined the mean
mass of each group of insects.

The scientists results are shown in the table.

Rate of carbon Rate of carbon

Temperature / °C Mean mass / g dioxide release / dioxide
µdm3 minute−1 release per gram /
µdm3 g−1 minute−1

10 0.047 0.12

20 0.046 0.33

30 0.048 0.56

(a) Complete the table above and plot a graph of your calculated values
against temperature on the graph paper. Express your calculated rates
with the appropriate number of significant figures.

(3)

The body temperature of the insects was largely determined by the temperature
they were kept at. At each temperature, the scientists recorded rate of carbon
dioxide release by individual insects over time. This rate depends upon spiracles
opening or closing.
The graphs below show results for three insects.

(b) Calculate the change in the rate per hour of opening of the spiracles
between 10 °C and 20 °C.
