1. CAISSON BREAKWATER

1.1. General View

The construction of Seawater Fore bay will commence once the reclamation to the construction
area is handed over to Daewoo.

Daewoo will give emphasis for excavation as part of the scope of works for this project.

Figure 1: Site Location Plan of Sea Water Intake Fore Bay

The wet and dry method techniques will be applied to execute the excavation work for the sea
water intake fore bay area. Both marine and land equipment such as excavator, dump trucks,
loader, dredging equipment will be utilized according to the current situation of the work.

Materials taken from excavation will be added/used for revetment works. Based on the
information given, there is an existing revetment made by others which will be utilized during
excavation and diversification works.

The following sections below will give the work sequence on how the Sea Water Intake Fore Bay
will be constructed.

Phase 1

Caisson breakwater construction is generally carried out in the order of foundation work, main
work, covering work and foot protection work, and superstructure work.

The installation of Concrete breakwater will proceed after crushed rock bedding has been
completed as required in the technical specifications.

All arrangement, e.g., batch plants, mixer trucks, cement, aggregates, water, formworks, steel bars
and etc., shall be made by Daewoo to commence the fabrication of Precast Caisson in advance
and in parallel to the filling works of the breakwater foundation.

1.3.2. Step by Step Work Sequence

The systematic work sequence for Sea Water Intake Structure Fore Bay is as below.

Step 1

● Construct enclosure revetment around

the surveyed line of the fore bay area (by
Others).

Phase 1

Step 2

● Install Sheet piles around the perimeter

of the Fore Bay Structure to be
constructed in accordance to the
designated survey line (by Others).

Step 3

● Excavation of Fore Bay Structure Area up

to the design ground level. Design slope
and benching will be followed during
excavation to maintain soil stabilization.

● Construct Fore Bay Structure according to

the approved design drawing.

Step 4

Phase 1

 Construct temporary revetment along

existing revetment enclosure.

 Backfill Fore Bay Structure according to

the required level.

Step 5

 Remove part of the revetment

enclosure.

Step 6

 Relocate part of the revetment

enclosure.

Step 7

 Excavation of fore bay in dry condition

method.

Step 7

 Excavation of fore bay in dry condition

method.

 Place rock protection to the slope

excavated fore bay

Step 8

 Removal of temporary revetment.

 Excavate remaining length of fore bay

by dredging.

 Place rock protection to the dredged

slope of the remaining part length of
fore bay

Step 9

 Clearing debris to site work area

1.4. Revetment Construction

All materials required for revetment construction will be prepared at the quarry and hauled to the
revetment “work front

1.4.1. Quarry Run Placement

Either Trucks or split hopper barge will deliver core material from the quarry directly to the
revetment work face. The initial placement of the revetment will be to the highest water level
(HWL). This approach provides a running surface wide enough for construction vehicles above
water level. Notwithstanding, there may be instances during the highest tides when the waves
may lap over

Trucks will:

 end tip material onto the revetment, with the material being pushed over the face by a
bulldozer or end loader; or end tip directly over the end of the core.

 The core material will sink through the soft bed to found on the competent underlying
stratum.

Split Hopper Barge will:

 Directly unload the material onto the revetment, with the material directly drop down
over the alignment of the core.

 The core material will sink through the soft bed to found on the competent underlying
stratum.

Surveyors will control and guide the progression of the core to the required lines and levels as it
extends out into the water. As the core wall extends some distance from shore there may be need
to provide turning areas to facilitate the efficient turning and movement of the construction
equipment.

1.4.2. Placement of Armor Stone

The quarry core does not have the integrity to withstand substantial wave attack. To protect the
core from potential storm conditions that may arise in the course of construction, placement of
armor material to the face of the core material at sea side will follow behind the core work face.

A stockpile of armor stone will be held at the quarry, sufficient to cover the core

Phase 1

1.4.3. Topping Off

After completion of the core and armoring, the revetment will be “topped off” with placement of
the additional core and armour to bring it to final design lines and levels.

Fines scalped from the quarry rock material or quarry overburden shall be placed on the surface
of the revetment to provide a running surface for vehicles.

1.4.4. Waterproof Mat Placement

Waterproof mat will be placed on the inner face of the revetment. The purpose of the mat is to
minimize migration of the fines within the material through the revetment.

1.5. Fore Bay Excavation

Excavation of Fore Bay will be executed in two parts.

 Dry condition excavation

 Wet condition excavation

1.5.1. Dry condition excavation

As soon as the temporary revetment is completed, dry condition excavation will start at half part
of fore bay. Excavator, loader, dump trucks will be mobilized for the excavation.

Excavation will be to the design slope and level provided in the drawing. Armor layer will be
placed by excavator and man-power when the design level is obtained.

1.5.2. Wet condition excavation

The excavation thru wet condition can only be started to the remaining half part of fore bay when
the temporary revetment is removed. Dredging equipment will be mobilized to dredge the
remaining fore bay.

Dredging will be to the design slope and level provided in the drawing. Armor layer will be placed
by long arm excavator in a floating barge when the design level is obtained. Divers will assist the
excavator in placing the arrangement of armor stone to the fore bay.

1.5.3. Disposal of Excess Materials

Materials produced from excavation, if approve by the Client will be used for revetment
construction otherwise it will be disposed to the disposal designated area.
