THRID MIDTERM EXAMINATION IN SCIENCE, GRADE 10

“ON ALL MY WORK, MY NAME AFFIRMS MY HONOR”

STUDENT’S NAME

SECTION: ___________________________ TEACHER: OLIVER M. VILLANUEVA

DATE: ________________ SCORE: ______________

General Directions: Read the directions carefully before answering the test. Browsing
your textbooks, notes, websites and sharing your answers to others by any means during
exam, are STRICTLY PROHIBITED and would forfeit your test form and incur appropriate
disciplinary action.

I. Directions: Read carefully the following concepts.

Write A if both statements state facts.
Write B if the first statement states fact.
Write C if the second statement states fact.
Write D if both statements are incorrect.

_______1. In Kinetic Molecular Theory,

I. Particles of different substances have different sizes.
II. Heavier particles move more slowly than lighter ones at a given temperature.

_______ 2. I. Diffusion is slower in liquids than in gases because the attractive forces between
liquid particles are quite stronger compared with that of gas particles.
II. Diffusion involves the movement of particles from a region of low concentration
toward a region of higher concentration.

_______ 3. I. Guns and other firing equipments are an application of Boyle’s Law.
II.Boyle’s law states that at constant temperature, the volume of a fixed amount of
gas is inversely proportional to the gas pressure.

_______ 4. I. Charles’ Law pressure is actually a modification of Ideal Gas Law

II. Charle’s Law states that the volume of a fixed amount of gas held at constant
pressure is directly proportional to the absolute temperature of the gas.

_______ 5. I. Gay-Lussac’s law states that the pressure of a gas is directly proportional to its
temperature at constant volume and number of moles of the gas.
II. Ideal gas law can be expressed as PV=nRT

_______ 6. Which of the following describes the pressure of a gas in a container?

I. The number of gas particles in the container
II. The force exerted by the gas particles in the container.

II. Directions. Write TRUE if the statement is correct. If false, underline the word/s that
make(s) the statement incorrect. Write the correct word/s on the blank.

____________ 7. The increase in its volume causes the warmer air to have lower density,
hence decreasing buoyancy.
____________ 8. At zero degrees Celsius, the volume of a gas is theoretically zero.
____________ 9. Lighter gases effuse slower than heavier gases at the same temperature
and pressure.
____________ 10. Graham’s law states that the rate of effusion of a gas is inversely
proportional to the time it gets through the tiny pores of the container.
____________ 11. All gas molecules obey gas laws.
____________ 12. A less attractive force exists between gas particles.

III. Directions. Briefly explain the following situations using KMT of gases.
16. LPG tanks are thick-walled steel containers (13-15)

17. An inflated balloon bursts when placed near a burning candle (16-18)

18. Tires usually burst after a long continuous drive during summer (19-21)

19. Rising of hot air balloon. (22-24)

IV. Directions. Illustrate a scenario where you can apply one of the gas laws(choose only one)
(25-26)

V. Directions. Analyze and solve the following problems. Show COMPLETE solutions and
BOX the final answer.

A. Science Teacher Pogi measured the rate of effusion of a particular gas and found to be
24.0 mL/min. Under the same conditions, the rate of effusion of pure methane (CH 4) gas is
47.8 mL/min. What is the molar mass of the unknown gas? (27-30)

B. Suppose two 200.0-L tanks are to be filled separately with the gases helium and hydrogen.
What mass of each gas is needed to produce a pressure of 2.70 atm in its respective tank
at 24oC? (31--36)

C. A particular balloon is designed by its manufacturer to be inflated to a volume of no more

than 2.5 L. If the balloon is filled with 2.0 L helium at sea level, is released, and rises to an
altitude at which the atmospheric pressure is only 500 mm Hg, will the balloon burst?
(Assume temperature is constant.) (37-43)

D. A tank contains a mixture of 52.5 g oxygen gas and 65.1 g carbon dioxide gas at 27°C. The
total pressure in the tank is 9.21 atm. Calculate the partial pressures of each gas in the
container. (44-50)
