Elements of Short Story
CHARACTER
is a person, or sometimes an animal, who takes part in
the action of a short story or other literary work.
Characters and how we get to know them:
1. Through the author’s physical description of them
2. Through their actions
3. Through their words (dialogue)
4. Through their inner thoughts
5. Through what other characters say and think about them
Elements of Short Story
Setting
is the time and place that a story occurs. Authors
often use descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings,
seasons or weather to provide a strong sense of setting.

Theme
is the central idea, message, or purpose in a
short story.
Elements of Short Story
Conflict
is any of the problems that a character encounters in a story.
Conflicts can be:
• External – conflict with others and with nature
• Internal – conflict within themselves
The main character may struggle:
a. against another important character (Man vs. Man)
b. against the forces of nature (Man vs. Nature)
c. against society (Man vs. Society)
d. against something inside himself or herself (feelings, emotions,
illness). (Man vs. Self)
Elements of Short Story
Plot
is a series of events and character actions that relate to the
central conflict.
There are 5 elements of plot:
1. Exposition - This is where characters and setting are
introduced.
2. Rising Action - All of the events that take place leading up to
the climax.
3. Climax - most exciting part of the story.
4. Falling Action - immediate reaction to the climax.
5. Resolution - conclusion of the plot.
EXERCISE
Group Activity
Identify the elements of short story in “The Oath from the Tales of the
Dervishes” through highlighting the Characters in green, underlining the
Setting, encircling the Theme, drawing rectangle in the Conflict and
highlighting the Plot in yellow.

Direction: In your group, you are task create a report book creatively. Use short
bond paper in doing the task. You are also given 20 minutes to do the task.
Read the selection “The Scarlet of Ibis” by James Hurst. Determine its
character, setting, conflict, plot and the theme. Write it in a 1/2
crosswise.
