Turner, Kay. “The Art of the Altar,” in Turner, Kay, Beautiful Necessity: The Art and meaning
of Women’s Altars. Aina. “An Australian’s Search of Belonging Led to the Silk Road and Famed
Hat”. The New York Times. Nov 17 2021.

Write 1-5 complete sentences to answer questions 2-5.

2. What is the main argument/theme of the reading(s)?

The main argument/theme of Kay Turner’s “The Art of the Altar” is that altarts are meant to be
beautiful and materialistic.

3. What is the author’s perspective?

Turner’s perspective is that of an outsider because she is writing about other women’s
altars and not her own.

4. How does this reading relate to the course topic and/or other readings? Think about how
the reading complements or contrasts other readings and discussions we have had in
class.
This reading relates to the activity that was done in class when we all contributed to a
class altar. The article talked about the different things that women put on their altar that
are significant to themselves. In the classroom we all put down things that were
significant to ourselves but not to each other.

5. What is your opinion of the reading? Do you agree with the author? Why or why not?
What did you like or dislike in the reading?
I agree with the author that altars should be personal because everybody is different and
everybody has their own way of showing gratitude.

6. Write 1 discussion question to share with the class:

What would your altar look like? or what things would you put on your altar?
