1 General notes
1.1 General safety instructions
The Coriolis Flow Scale can only be assembled, operated and main-
tained if the user strictly observes the operating instructions. The op-
erator has to read through carefully these operating instructions, as the
manufacturer does not accept liability for damage arising from the non-
observance of these operating instructions.
- In case of problems or difficulties that cannot be done away by the user
of the Coriolis Flow Scale, the user has to contact the Brabender service
department.
- Only skilled staff is allowed to mount, operate, maintain and service the
device. Qualified staff are persons that have the according training, ex-
perience, instructions and knowledge concerning standards, regula-
tions, rules for the prevention of accidents and the plant itself and that
have been authorised by the persons that are responsible for the safety
of the installation to carry through the necessary operations and ma-
nipulations and to realise and avoid possible dangers.
- The user of the plant has to train the operating staff regularly about the
contents of the operating instructions and the safety regulations. The
operating instructions have to be kept at hand for the operator.
- The sound level according to DIN 45635 - measured with an empty
Coriolis Flow Scale - is inferior to 70dB. In case of higher sound levels
due to the product, the user will have to install a noise protection.
- No mechanical or electrical safety equipment must be disassembled or
put out of order.
- Make sure that the place of the installation provides enough free space
for the operation and possible cleaning and maintenance works of the
Coriolis Flow Scale.

1.2 Delivery and checking of the goods

If the Coriolis Flow Scale is delivered to the construction site it is
mounted on a pallet. The scope of supply has to correspond to our order
confirmation. Transport damages have to be confirmed by the forward-
ing company directly after receipt of the goods and announced to the
deliverer. Loosely supplied construction groups and accessories are to
be found on the packing lists, after receipt their completeness has to be
checked.

G
Scope of supply of the Coriolis Flow Scale: For the static adjustment
of the load cell we supply a guide roller and a test weight suspended
from a nylon cord with an M6 screw. Please store these parts.

1.3 The danger signs on the Coriolis Flow Scale

Before cleaning, service or maintenance work the Coriolis Flow Scale

has to be disconnected from the mains and protected against unau-
thorised switching on.

2 Functioning of the Coriolis Flow Scale

! The Coriolis Flow Scale must only be used for the

output, the weighing range and the product specified in your or-
der, because it has been dimensioned to this particular applicati-
on. Arbitrary modifications by the customer risk to cause severe
functional failures. Moreover the Coriolis Flow Scale is no longer
guaranteed by Brabender Technologie KG.

The Coriolis Flow Scale determines

Drive motor the bulk material flow by measuring
the change of torque on the impeller
Load cell wheel. The impeller wheel is driven
by the drive motor with constant
Hood operating speed. Product that flows
via the inlet and the product inlet
Inlet
cone onto the constantly revolving
impeller wheel causes a Coriolis
force that acts in opposite direction
Vibration to the sense of rotation. To provide
isolation pads
a constant speed the drive motor
therefore has to produce a higher
torque. The torque and thus also
Product
inlet cone the change of torque are sensed by
the load cell. As the Coriolis force
Impeller wheel and thus the change of torque are a
function of the bulk material flow,
the latter can be calculated from
the speed of the impeller wheel and
Product the change of torque that has been
outlet cone
measured. This calculation and the
processing of the measuring signals
is provided by the Congrav micro-
Outlet computer controller.
As a function of the Congrav type
Product flow
controller the actual value is meas-
ured continuously or used to con-
trol an upstream feeding device.

The Coriolis Flow Scale can be employed for all non caking, flowable
products with temperatures up to +70°C max. The Coriolis Flow Scale is
available in two construction sizes:
- CDW 150 for a maximum of 40m³/h and a constant speed of N = 650
U/min
- CDW 250 for a maximum of 100m³/h and a constant speed of N =
450 U/min

2.1 The operating conditions for a CDW
With a Coriolis Flow Scale the following operating conditions have to be
observed and respected besides the standard conditions (electric supply,
etc.):
- The Coriolis Flow Scale must only be operated if it is completely
mounted.
- After switching on, the drive motor must not adopt abruptly its oper-
ating speed, as this would necessarily damage the load cell. In its
standard execution the drive motor will be accelerated by the control
electronics in a ramp function until reaching the operating speed
(soft start of the drive motor).
- The Coriolis Flow Scale has to be equipped additionally with an
emergency cut-out device if the distance between the manipulation
unit and the Coriolis Flow Scale is to large for an emergency cut-out
that might possibly be required.
- To avoid measuring faults caused by a warm-up of the motor during
production, the drive motor has to be started app. 2 hours before the
start of the measurement. After this lead time the drive motor and the
complete mechanical weighing system have reached the operating
temperature.
- Product deposits on the impeller wheel cause an unbalance and thus
an inaccurate actual value. This has to be avoided by respecting the
maintenance and cleaning intervals (see maintenance and cleaning).
To discover unallowed unbalances the Coriolis Flow Scale can be
equipped with a vibration sensor. With the standard execution this
vibration sensor causes an alarm cut-out if the vibrations exceed the
allowed maximum value. For an adaptation to downstream processes
the vibration sensor can also be employed as fault indicator without
cut-out.
- The negative impact caused by external vibrations has to be pre-
vented by means of flexible sleeves at the inlet and the outlet and by
the use of vibration isolation pads (scope of supply).
- To provide optimum measuring conditions the Coriolis Flow Scale
needs a constant bulk material flow. For this reason, strong pulsa-
tions or even an interruption of the product flow have to be avoided.
This goes especially for upstream feeders that are controlled via the
actual value measuring of the Coriolis Flow Scale.
- The installation of downstream equipment has to be made in such a
manner that no product jams might appear.
- If the process conditions require the introduction of inert gas to avoid
oxidation processes, this is possible with a maximum pressure of 2
mbar (20mm water colon).
- After maintenance and repair works the load cell of the Coriolis Flow
Scale has to be adjusted anew.
- The determination of the Coriolis Flow Scale characteristic has to be
done by means of the Congrav controller after any mounting or
maintenance work.
- For an autotare operation of the Congrav controller the Coriolis Flow
Scale has to be started without product flow. For this operating mode
the product supply has to be stopped by means of appropriate shut-
off devices (slide valves etc.). For triggering the shut-off device, the
Congrav provides a 24 VDC signal.

A mounting plate is installed on the cover of the inlet cone of the Corio-
lis Flow Scale. This mounting plate carries under its hood the complete
weighing system of the Coriolis Flow Scale. Before service works on the
weighing system the hood has to be taken off be loosening the fastening
screws.
It is not allowed to operate the Coriolis Flow Scale without hood. The

! cover protects the weighing system from dirt or unauthorised

touching.

The load cell functions according to the principle of wire strain gauges
and supplies a mV signal according to its loading, this signal will be
evaluated by the Congrav controller. The load cell is connected to the
force transmission lever via a flexible connection. The connection has to
be adjusted in such a manner that the load cell is under slight tensile
load (50-100g). The torque of the drive motor is transmitted to the load
cell via the force transmission lever.
Two overload protection screws permit to protect the load cell from dam-
age.

Setting of the overload protection screws a = 0,3 mm.

The overload protection screws are neither a substitute for the trans-
! port catches and nor for the soft start of the drive motor.

The transport catches (painted red) protect the load cell from chocks and
overloading during a transport or maintenance works. The transport
catches always have to be locked before any maintenance or repair
work. For the operation the transport catches have to be loosened com-
pletely and fastened in their operating position as illustrated.

2.2.1 The static adjustment of the load cell

Before the first commissioning and before any commissioning after
maintenance/repair works the load cell has to be adjusted statically.
For this static adjustment you require the guide roller and the test
weight that are part of our scope of supply. The static adjustment has to
be made under operating conditions, i.e. with a running drive motor and
after elapse of the lead time, yet without bulk material flow.

©Brabender Technologie, Februar 1999 Operating Instructions Coriolis Flow Scale Page 6/14
Load cell

Test weight
guide roller

a a

Course of the static adjustment:

1. Disassemble the hood.
2. Unlock the transport catches (painted red). The transport catch lo-
cated on the opposite side of the load cell must not yet be screwed
to the mounting plate, as the adjustment will be done on this side.
3. Start the drive motor of the Coriolis Flow Scale and wait until elapse
of the lead time (app. 2 hours).
After elapse of the lead time:
4. Note the actual weight value displayed by the Congrav controller.
5. Fasten the guide roller to the Coriolis Flow Scale according to the
illustration. For the fastening of the guide roller you use a fastening
screw from the cover of the Coriolis Flow Scale.
6. Now you fasten the nylon cord of the test weight cautiously to the
force transmission lever according to the illustration and insert the
nylon cord into the groove of the guide roller.
7. Align the guide roller so that the nylon cord and the force transmis-
sion lever are in rectangular position (90°) one to the other.
8. The weight value displayed by the Congrav now has to be superior
by the weight value of the test weight (500g). Should this not be the
case, the Congrav parameter weight test value will have to be ad-
justed (see operating instructions of the Congrav).
9. Disassemble the test weight and the guide roller.
10. Fasten the second transport catch in its operating position
(unlocked) and mount the hood.

The static adjustment only serves for the adjustment of the load cell

! and of the Congrav. It does not correspond to the autotare function of

the Congrav, and thus cannot be a substitute for this function.

©Brabender Technologie, Februar 1999 Operating Instructions Coriolis Flow Scale Page 7/14
3 Mounting of the Coriolis Flow Scale

! Before mounting the complete installation has to be

switched off and protected against switching on by corresponding
protections. Generally, the mounting works must only be carried
through under respect of the valid safety conditions and specific
product characteristics (e.g. caustic).

3.1 Conditions for mechanical mounting

Mounting tools: General locksmith’s tools, level

Lifting equipment: Fork truck, crane
Auxiliary material: Cleaning rag, cleaning agent (not combustible and non
aggressive), cover tarpaulin etc.....

- Transport and lifting devices that are required for the transport of
the parts to the place where the feeder is to be put in place and for
the installation itself, have to be available.
- Electrical energy (local voltage) has to be available.
- The place where the feeder is to be installed has to be protected
against possible negative impacts of the climate. With temperatures
below 0°C at the place of the installation, continuation of mounting
work cannot be guaranteed.
- The support construction of the Coriolis Flow Scale requires a stable
base construction and the possibility of fastening to the vibration
isolation pads (M10 screws).
- If the Coriolis Flow Scale is delivered with a frame construction, the
installation surface has to provide a portative base construction and
the possibility of tight anchoring.
- Works at or above the place of the installation that might impede
considerably the mounting of the feeder have to be terminated.
- The free space around the place where the feeder is to be installed
has to be dimensioned large enough, so that there is still access for
later works on the Coriolis Flow Scale, e.g. disassembly of the impel-
ler wheel (at least 2m radius around the Coriolis Flow Scale).
- A free space of at least 200mm has to be reserved on top of the drive
motor for its ventilation.

! This space is not sufficient for the disassembly of the drive motor.
For this purpose you need a minimum height of 2m.

- The Coriolis Flow Scale has to be installed in vertical position.

- For the connection of upstream and downstream equipment flexible
sleeves that are suitable for your product have to be available.
- For mounting it has to be observed that the bulk material must flow
through the Coriolis Flow Scale without jam.
- During mounting the transport catches have to be locked.

©Brabender Technologie, Februar 1999 Operating Instructions Coriolis Flow Scale Page 8/14
3.2 Conditions for electrical mounting
- All electrical works must always and exclusively be done by author-
ised specialist staff.
- The local regulations for earthing and connection of the protective
system have to be strictly observed. Protective earthing always has to
be connected.
- The correct connection of protective earth with a sufficient con-
ductor cross section is generally prescribed.
- Laying of signal and control lines must be isolated from power cables,
screened and in separate ducts. The electric connection of the Corio-
lis Flow Scale is provided in the junction boxes already mounted. De-
pending on the execution of the Coriolis Flow Scale the junction
boxes are fixed to the cover or to the frame. The junction boxes are
equipped with special PG-screwings that permit wiring according to Abschirmung
screening

the regulations of electromagnetic compatibility - provided they have blindage

been correctly installed (see drawing). Exception: EExi-design.

- The electric connection of the motor cable has to be made without
tensile stress, as otherwise there would be a change to the weight
signal.
- The prescribed maximum line lengths and line sections have to be
observed.
- An additional emergency cut-out device has to be installed to the EMC-safe PG
Coriolis Flow Scale if the distance between the manipulation unit for
the drive motor (in most cases: control cabinet) and the Coriolis Flow
Scale is to large for an emergency cut-out that might possibly be re-
quired.
- The electric mounting has to take into account the soft start of the
drive motor. After switching on of the drive motor it has to run up to
its operating speed according to a ramp function and not abruptly.
The corresponding control electronics is available as optional acces-
sory.

3.3 Mounting of the Coriolis Flow Scale

The Coriolis Flow Scale is transported to the installation place by means
of appropriate equipment or fixed to the prepared support construction
by means of four M10 screws. The Coriolis Flow Scale has to be
mounted in vertical position. You will possibly have to insert lining
plates to guarantee the verticality. The connections for the product sup-
ply to the inlet or the outlet have to be made by means of flexible sleeves
without lateral offset and without tensile stress. The last point is the
electric mounting according to the wiring plans.

©Brabender Technologie, Februar 1999 Operating Instructions Coriolis Flow Scale Page 9/14
4 Commissioning of the Coriolis Flow Scale

Before mounting and commissioning the complete installation has to

! be switched off and protected against switching on by corresponding
protections.

The customer has to guarantee that

- all assembly works are terminated.
- all supply lines (electrical and mechanical) have to be available and
connected.
- all prescribed safety measures for the reliability of operation have to
be respected.
- all other equipment has to be available and completely mounted.
- original product has to be available in sufficient quantities.
- receptacles for collecting the product have to be available

4.1 Before the start of commissioning: preliminary checks

Inspection without supply voltages being on:
1. Check the mechanics as per the drawing?

4. Are
5. Check the correct mounting of the flexible sleeves?
6. Check the correct electric wiring ?
7. Is the load cell free from foreign bodies and dirt?
8. Is the vibration sensor free from dirt ?

Inspection with supply voltages being on:

1. Check the correct sense of rotation of the drive motor?
The correct sense of rotation is marked by a red flash on the
motor.
2. Correct functioning of the soft start of the drive motor?
If all of the above points have been answered positively, you can unlock
the transport catches as per chapter 2.2 and proceed with the following
points.

3. Has the load cell been connected correctly?

With a correct connection of the load cell the Congrav controller
has to display a small positive weight value (50-100g) -with the
drive motor being stopped. This weight value has to increase, if
the drive motor is started and runs with the correct sense of
rotation.
3. Did the lead time of the drive motor run off?
4. Has the weighing system been adjusted ? (see chapter 2.2.1)

4.2 Commissioning
The Coriolis Flow Scale is now ready for operation. The further commis-
sioning depends on the application of the Coriolis Flow Scale. Be sure to
observe the corresponding chapters in the operating instructions of the
Congrav controller.

feeder has to be dead and the main switch has to be protected
against reclosing.

- To protect the load cell, the transport catches have to be locked be-
fore maintenance works.
- The load cell must only be cleaned with compressed air or a brush.
Cleaning with water or high-pressure is not allowed.
- Do not use the Coriolis Flow Scale as working platform for mounting
works.
- Selflock nuts that have already been loosened have to be replaced by
new ones.
- Safety equipment must never be removed or put out of order by
modifications of the feeder. If this is required for the works to be car-
ried through, the relevant safety equipment has to be installed again
directly after the end of the works.
- Damage has to be repaired immediately, or the part concerned has to
be replaced, if necessary.
- Please observe the special safety instructions of the product.
- Before a new commissioning of the Coriolis Flow Scale remove all for-
eign bodies (tools etc...).

5.3 Disassembly instructions for maintenance works
5.3.1 Disassembly of the load cell
1. Disconnect the voltage supply and protect it against unauthorised
reclosing.
2. Disassemble the hood.
3. Lock the transport catches.
4. Disconnect the load cell electrically.
5. Loosen the connection load cell - force transmission lever.
6. Loosen the fastening screws of the load cell.

5.3.2 Disassembly of the impeller wheel

1. Disconnect the voltage supply and protect it against unauthorised
reclosing.
2. Disassemble the hood.
3. Lock the transport catches.
4. Loosen the outlet sleeve.
5. If necessary, support the outlet cone for the following disassembly.
6. Cautiously loosen the outlet cone and place it aside.
7. Loosen the fastening nut of the impeller wheel, by holding up the
impeller wheel against the rotation axis by means of a second
wrench.
8. Cautiously take out the impeller wheel and discard the self-locking
nut. For the assembly you have to employ an unused self-locking
nut.

5.3.3 Disassembly of the drive motor

1. Disassemble the impeller wheel (steps 1 - 8, please see 5.3.2).
9. Disconnect all electrical connections.
10. Loosen the screws of the cover.
11. With CDW 250 the mounting plate is equipped with 3 transport
eyelets, from which you can suspend a lifting auxiliary. With CDW
150 the lifting auxiliaries (hoisting slings) have to be fixed under the
cover.
12. Cautiously lift the cover.
13. Cautiously set aside the cover on a suitable place of deposit.
14. Support the drive motor and loosen the fastening screws of the drive
motor (rear side of the cover).

For the disassembly as it has been described enough free space

over the CDW is required. If the space is not available, the com-
! plete CDW will have to be disassembled and transported to a
suitable place. Here, it has to be mounted so that enough free
space is available above and below the CDW.

The mounting of the groups of components concerned is in reverse or-

der. Be sure to observe that the activities as well have to be carried
through in reverse order (e.g. instead of disconnecting à connecting,
etc.).
After each disassembly and before each new commissioning the Cori-
olis Flow Scale will have to be mounted completely. An incomplete
! installation, e.g. without outlet cone is not allowed as it means a con-
siderable risk of injuries.

©Brabender Technologie, Februar 1999 Operating Instructions Coriolis Flow Scale Page 12/14
5.4 Spare parts
For an operation without any problems or disturbances of the Coriolis
Flow Scale the user has to keep in stock the necessary spare parts.
Thus, we recommend to request a spare parts offer. We only guarantee
for the original spare parts delivered by us. If you employ spare parts
that have not been delivered by us, there is no more guarantee by Bra-
bender Technologie KG. Please indicate the type of device and the order
number (see cover sheet of the operation manual).

6 Transport of the Coriolis Flow Scale

For the transport to the place of the installation you have to employ
suitable transport equipment (e.g. fork trucks). Suspending transport
ropes from the drive motor is not allowed, as it might cause consider-
able damage.

! Generally, the transport catches have to be locked before any trans-

port.

8 Storage

8.1 Storage conditions

If it is necessary to stock the Coriolis Flow Scale over a longer period on
the construction site or during longer periods of stand-still (e.g. inter-
ruptions of mounting operations), the following has to be observed:
- Before disassembly of the devices the Coriolis Flow Scale has to be
discharged and cleaned.
- Put back the feeder in its original package material. In order to per-
mit air circulation in the packaging box, the cover of the box should
be bolstered with spacer blocks.
- Ideally, the boxes should be stored in a closed hall. However, it is
also possible to stock them outside under a roofing.
- Electric and electronic construction groups should be stored in dry
and clean rooms.
- Electric motors and electromechanical parts always have to be disas-
sembled before storage, they are stored together with the electric
components (ambient temperature: + 10 °C to + 40 °C).
- Humidity caused by rain, dripping water and wet floors or walls, as
well as the formation of condensation or perspiration water should be
avoided.
- Sleeves, joints and seals have to be stored in a room that is cool, dry
and protected against incident light.
- Check the protective coating of the painted parts and, if necessary,
touch up or renew the painting.
- In case of longer interruptions of the mounting operations, open
switchboard plants have to be closed during the interruption in order
to protect the system from touch, dirt, corrosion and humidity.

8.2 Requirements for the storage place

- weather resistant
Hall:
- protected against intruding of unauthor-
ised persons
- paved with water drain
Floor:
- free from vibration
- passable for transport and lifting equip-
ment
- suitably ventilated
Environmental con-
ditions: - dry
- possibly free from dust
- max. humidity of the air 40% to 70%
