TASK NAME: Define the Air exhaust system components and their function.
JOB: C1.3.8
LOCATION CPF2 SPECIFIC LOCATION (IF PRACTICAL): POWER PLANT

UNIT(S) COVERED CRITERIA/COMPETENCES

TURBINE BASICS AWARENESS

TASK DESCRIPTION :
The air exhaust system of a gas turbine consists of several components that play a crucial role in efficiently expelling
the combustion gases and ensuring proper operation. Here are the main components of the air exhaust system and
their functions:

Exhaust Diffuser: The exhaust diffuser is located downstream of the combustion chamber and serves to expand and slow
down the high-velocity combustion gases. It converts the high-velocity, high-pressure gas stream into a lower-velocity,
higher-pressure stream, allowing for smoother gas flow and reducing pressure losses.

Transition Piece: The transition piece connects the combustion chamber to the turbine section. It guides the hot
combustion gases from the combustion chamber to the first-stage turbine nozzles. The transition piece is designed to
withstand high temperatures and ensure a smooth and controlled flow of gases into the turbine section.

Nozzles and Vanes: The turbine section of the gas turbine includes a series of turbine nozzles and vanes. These components
are arranged in stages and are responsible for extracting energy from the hot gases to drive the turbine rotor. The nozzles
and vanes are designed to efficiently convert the thermal energy of the gases into mechanical energy, thereby producing
power.

Exhaust Stack or Duct: The exhaust stack or duct is the final part of the air exhaust system. Its primary function is to direct
the combustion gases away from the turbine and safely release them into the atmosphere. The stack or duct is designed to
minimize pressure losses, maintain the required back-pressure for optimal turbine operation, and control the dispersion of
exhaust gases.

Exhaust Silencer: In some gas turbine installations, an exhaust silencer or attenuator is incorporated to reduce noise
emissions from the exhaust gases. The silencer utilizes sound-absorbing materials and acoustic design principles to attenuate
the noise generated during the gas discharge. It helps comply with noise regulations and ensures a quieter operation of the
gas turbine.

Emission Control Systems: The air exhaust system may also include emission control systems to reduce the environmental
impact of the exhaust gases. These systems can involve the use of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or other technologies
to mitigate pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx) or carbon monoxide (CO) before they are released into the atmosphere.
