TASK NAME: Define the Air inlet system components of the Gas turbine.
JOB: C1.3.5
LOCATION CPF2 SPECIFIC LOCATION (IF PRACTICAL): POWER PLANT

UNIT(S) COVERED CRITERIA/COMPETENCES

TURBINE BASICS AWARENESS

TASK DESCRIPTION :
The air inlet system of a gas turbine is responsible for providing clean, compressed, and controlled airflow to the turbine's
combustion chamber. It comprises several components that work together to ensure efficient operation. Here are the main
components of the air inlet system:

Inlet Air Filtration: The air inlet system typically incorporates air filters to remove contaminants, such as dust, dirt, and debris, from the
incoming air. These filters help protect the turbine's compressor blades and other internal components from damage caused by foreign
particles. They are designed to achieve high filtration efficiency while minimizing pressure drop.

Inlet Air Duct: The inlet air duct is a conduit that connects the ambient air source to the gas turbine's compressor section. It ensures a
smooth and controlled flow of air into the turbine. The duct is designed to minimize pressure losses and maintain a uniform airflow
distribution across the compressor inlet.

Inlet Air Anti-Icing System: In colder environments, where ice formation is a concern, gas turbines may incorporate an anti-icing system
in the air inlet. This system typically consists of anti-icing valves or heat exchangers that warm the incoming air to prevent ice buildup on
the compressor blades and other critical components.

Inlet Air Bleed System: Gas turbines may include an inlet air bleed system, which allows a controlled amount of air to be extracted from
the compressor inlet. This bleed air is used for various purposes, such as cooling turbine components, providing sealing air for internal
seals, or supplying air for other equipment within the power plant.

Inlet Air Silencer: To reduce noise emissions, gas turbines often incorporate an inlet air silencer or attenuator. This component is
designed to minimize the noise generated by the air intake and attenuate the sound before it exits the turbine, thus reducing the overall
noise level of the plant.

Inlet Air Cooling System: In hot climates or applications where the ambient air temperature is high, gas turbines may utilize an inlet air
cooling system. This system uses evaporative or mechanical cooling techniques to lower the temperature of the incoming air. Cooling the
air improves the turbine's performance by increasing its power output and efficiency.

Inlet Air Flow Control Devices: Gas turbines may include flow control devices, such as inlet guide vanes or variable inlet guide vanes
(VIGV), to optimize the airflow into the compressor. These devices allow for adjustment of the inlet air angle and control the amount of
air entering the compressor, helping to maintain stable operation and improve efficiency across various load conditions.
