Exploratory
Household Services is one of the many courses in Technology Livelihood
Education which has four core competencies namely: 1) cleaning the living
room, dining room, bedrooms, toilet, and kitchen; 2) washing and ironing
clothes, linen, and fabric; 3) preparing hot and cold meals/food, and 4)
providing food and beverage service. This course is designed for student who
ought to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to Household
Services tasks.

This module is an exploratory and introductory course on Household

Services which leads you to Household Services National Certificate Level II (NC
II). It covers six common competencies that a Grade 7/Grade 8 Technology and
Livelihood Education (TLE) student ought to possess. The preliminaries of this
exploratory course include the following: 1) discussion of the relevance of the
course, 2) explanation of key concepts relative to the course, and 3) exploration
of career opportunities.

BASIC CONCEPTS OF HOUSEHOLD SERVICES

Competencies:

After reading and accomplishing this module you are expected to acquire
the following competencies:

 explain basic concepts in HS;

 discuss the relevance of the course; and
 explore career opportunities for HS.

BASIC CONCEPT OF HOUSEHOLD SERVICES

Household services are non-market services that are produced within

households that have close similarities with goods and services produced
within markets. It refers to such activities as sweeping, vacuuming, washing
dishes, doing laundry, preparing meals, cleaning bathrooms, dusting, mopping
floors, and making up beds.

Household Services and housekeeping have same concept of task, that is

maintaining the cleanliness but they differ in scope. Household Services focus
on the domestic work only while housekeeping is intended for both domestic
and institutional or lodging establishment like hotels, inns, hospitals, and
such.

Relevance of Household Services

Household services are necessary part of one’s everyday life. Keeping the
orderliness and cleanliness in a house promotes good overall health and safety.
Acquiring skills in Household Services can be applied in your daily living by
actively participating in your household chores. Also, this can be used to be
employed as housekeeper, and/or chambermaid. Moreover, having the said
skills will improve your sense of responsibility which is very important in doing
any task.
If you will let your family members be involved in household chores, it
will give them opportunity to become active participant in the house. They will
begin to see themselves as important contributors to the family. Also, they will
feel more capable for having met their obligations and completed their tasks.

Career Opportunities

Household Services requires skills in cleaning activities, preparing meals,

and providing food and beverage services. Having these competencies will help
you to be possibly employed with the following careers:

1. Housekeeping Supervisor 5. Room Attendant

2. Housekeeping Attendant 6. Kitchen Staff
3. Chambermaid 7. Food Server
4. Laundry Steward
Actually, there are more career opportunities that you can explore if you
will be able to meet the expectations of Household Services Course. You can
possibly be hired in both land and sea-based work.
There are people who have acquired skills in household services and
housekeeping who are working in different hotels in the Philippines and
Abroad, and even in cruise ships who receive a very good compensation.
