Matching Pipe for Qualified Fittings: Carbon Steel to ASTM-A106B and ASTM-A53B (Note 3)

Stress Intensification Factor I: 1.2. (Note 4,5)

Reference Qualification Document: Biersteker, Dietmann, Sareshwala, and Haupt, “Qualification of Non-
Standard Product Form for ASME Code for pressing piping, B31
Applications” Codes and Standards and Applications for Design and
Analysis of Pressure Vessel and Piping Components, PVP-Vol. 210-
1, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, New York, 1991.

Note 1: Piping systems containing the piping assemblies listed may establish design pressures up to and including the
ambient maximum design pressure given for temperature from -20° to 400° F for ASME B31.3 (based on
allowable stresses for the matching pipe of 15,000 psi and 20,000 psi respectively). For temperatures above
400°F in ASME B31.1 the maximum design pressure given shall be multiplied by the temperature-derating
factor listed in Table 2. Interpolation between derating factors is permitted. For methodology used to
develop maximum design pressures in accordance with ASME codes, see Reference Qualification Document.

Testing performed has disclosed that the toughness for the 15V24 material at -20°F to be comparable or
better than matching pipe material (document available upon request). However, the toughness of matching
pipe material may be affected when operating below normal ambient temperatures.

Note 2: XXX designates fitting configuration: CPL = Coupling; TEE = Straight Leg Tee; EL90 = 90°
Elbow.

Note3: Pipe used for pressure qualification tested was a seamless construction to ASME-SA106 Grade B, and
electric resistance welded (ERW) construction to ASME-SA53 Grade B. Maximum pipe hardness Rb 90.
For assemblies using ASTM A106 Grade A, A53 Grade A, or A587 matching pipe, the listed pressure-
temperature ratings shall be multiplied by 0.80. Prior to using Series MAS-3000 fittings on other carbon
steel pipe specifications, schedules, or constructions, consult with LOKRING.

When installing on ERW pipe, the longitudinal weld seam shall be drawn smooth or sanded to remove any
suckback, flat spots, or other surface irregularities. If the required surface conditions cannot be met, the use
of anaerobic sealant, such as Loctite PST sealant (given process compatibility) is recommended.

Note 4: The stress intensification factor, I, used for B31.1 thermal expansion and B31.3 displacement stress-range
calculations has been established in accordance with test procedures outlined in the Reference Qualification
Document. In this testing, an assembly consisting of a LOKRING coupling two equal length pipe tangents
on either side of the coupling was fabricated using standard LOKRING installation procedures. A uniform
bending moment was applied to the fitting/pipe assembly. This moment induced a bending stress in the
assembly greater than the pipe material yield strength (35,000 psi), and caused the assembly to flex in plane
passing through the neutral axis. In one complete flexural cycle, the fitting/pipe assembly bends an equal
distance to either side of the neutral axis. The stress intensification thus determined means that the
LOKRING fitting/matching pipe assembly will normally survive 7,000 fully reversed flexural cycles with
the matching pipe nominal stress equal to the pipe material yield strength.

While extensive fatigue testing of the 15V24 fitting and matching pipe assemblies have been performed
(documentation available upon request), it is cautioned that th3 15V24 material is among the highest tensile
strength materials approved for use in pressure component applications. In developing stress intensification
data, one assembly endured 80,000 cycles at a nominal moment stress of 35,000 psi without failure.
However, both B31.1 and B31.3 provide notes suggesting caution when designing with materials other than
those in the ASME database. Thus, until more data is available, it is recommended that the B31.1 thermal
expansion and B31.3 displacement allowable stress-ranges be conservatively based upon grade B carbon steel
allowable stress values.

Note 5: The pressure-temperature ratings and the stress intensification factor given are for the LOKRING coupling
fitting/matching pipe joint only. If the LOKRING fitting is the TEE or EL90, a forged tee or elbow exists
between LOKRING couplings located at the ends of the product form. Calculations and testing confirm
that effective pressure-temperature ratings and the effective stress intensification factors (based on matching
pipe cross-sectional properties) are enveloped by LOKRING coupling/matching pipe values. This is true
as well for conditions where corrosion has internally reduced the wall thickness such that pressure-
temperature rating and stress intensification factor could be affected. For flexibility calculations, the tee or
elbow may conservatively be considered as a rigid member.
