" THE INDEPENDENT MAGAZINE FOR WARHAMMER FANTASY ROLEPLAY oT Bae ey UK £300 US $4.95 Dyieeee Seo eni Welcome to issue 12 of Warpstone. For various reasons it’s been a parcculaly tough haul this time, buthere we are on time. (And yes in reply toa reader's comment ~ we are looking teribly punctual these days. Very unbecoming must say) Not only that, but we've got plenty ofexcellent material to get your teeth nto and we're pleased to have received some correspondence forthe letters page. More please... “Marienburg: Sold Down the River has finally washed up on the shelves, a yea after our special issue dedicate tothe city. Lostat sea Jang all that, but was originally timed the issue fora simultaneous release. Sill, i looks very impressive indeed and we do give it a thorough review. Hopefully it marks the beginning of Hogshead’s | true revitalisation ofthe WFRP lin. Hogshead did save WFRP (not| simply by re-eleasing it, but by doing a quality job oft but itis time or regularnew supplements. Ofcourse, ona similar note inthe grand, tradition of WFRP, our articles on Slavery and Talabheim haven't materialised inthis issue as promised. Bar the end of the world on New Years Eve, Slavery will tum up next issue and the Talabheim series will begin in issue 14 Justas Hollywood stars wino have spent years striving tobe famous pend many of thee interviews moaning about being famous, Intend to bea “successful” fanzine editor moaning about beinga successful” fanzine editor. (Successful being a very relative term of course ~ we produce a regular product players buy, read and, for the most part, liked. Hey! A success!) Perhaps ‘moan’ isa bit of strong word, but nevertheless I'm going to discuss Warpstone's policy on submissions. ‘We love ‘em, and we just don’t get enough! ‘Warpstone wants as much input from readers as possible. A diversity of voices ean ony strengthen the magazine. Quite simply, ives us more material to work with, which is always a good thing? [Currently we have a core team of writers, bolstered by those who submit the occasional article. But this is not closed club— we want ore members ‘Once an article (these comments apply fo at, too) hes been submited and read, we always reply with constructive criticism virtually no Warpstone article has been accepted without reworking, Such a dialogue between editor and author ean involve numerous drafts, However, many writers fel put of by ths initial rejection and never resubmit thei work, which isa real shame, particularly after xe erfor that has clearly gone into preparing them. Let's make thisclear: asking for improvements or even rewriting is nat some sort of rejection by another name. If we aren't interested fin an article we will tell you so, and tell you why. The process is simply a way of getting the most out of piece, so thatthe final article really Falls its potential - be it a 500 word story oF 20,000 word scenario. And i's nota one-way process, either, I often have back~ and-forth discussions about the minor details of career (whether an advance should be +10 ot +20, or ifa skill is appropriate) ora single point ina location description, So if you intend to submitto Warpstone be prepared for more work than you pethaps expected, ‘While onthe topic of submissions its wort alking about articles based outside the borders of The Empire and Kisev. Ii difficult topic to balance. We are more than happy to cover other areas of the Wrhamer World, but ae careful to maintain the overall atmosphere. Any article must be firmly placed in the context of what has gone before. We would therefore tum down career based solely in astra, but would look stan article or a scenario based somewhere on the continent, particulary i there were good reasons why existing Pt might end up there, We also take care with articles on topics covered by forthcoming oficial sourcebooks. For example, there site point publishing an ancle on Magic when Realms ofSorceryison the way and might well make the piece obsolete, Of course, after the sourcebook has been released, things ae entirely different. At that point, both we and our readers will view the atic in the same context even ifthe article aims to ignore or re-write it! ‘The message fom this? All those who have submitted, and promised to come back to me with arevised draft go for it! REVIEWS Warhammer Armies: Vampire Counts Published by Games Workshop Reviewed by John Foody Before I begin, i's worth satin the intentions ofthis, review, Examininga Games Workshop product for Warpstone isnot a staight forward task. Although bothare nominally based in the Warhammer world, we are reviewing a product for ‘a purpose is wasnt created for. Simply, this review examines if Vampire Couns @ is a useful product for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay not is it a good product for Warhammer Fantasy Battle, And there isa difference, ‘With previous Warbamer books, many WERP payers have held their ands up in espairas the background is, changed andin some cases ripped apart. Bretonnia reviewed in Warpstone Issue 7) is certainly the most extreme example ofthis. Many of the books, and his one i included, also has the problem that the army seems to dominate the World in its impact with minimal influence from other cultures and “The latest Warhammer Armies book follows the others in offering army lists, painting tips and background on its chosen subject. Vampire Counts, ‘writen by Tuomas Pirinen and Alessio Cavaiore, looks a the undead within ‘the Old Word. These are led by the Vampire Counts, fou families (Bloodiines ‘hey are called here) that rule Sylvania. As an easterly province of The Empire (ruled bythe elector in Strand) it is of potential interest to WFRP players. Vampires themselves are popular bed guys and they have never been fully detailed for WFRP. Of course, there are many sources both in literature and cinema and it was going o be interesting to see how Games ‘Workshop integrated them into the Warhammer world. In fact Games ‘Workshop had rejected WFRP Vampire sourcebook in the pastas the writer. ‘well known WFRP author, had made some ofthe sympathetic characters However, due toa change of ‘vision’ at Games Workshop they were no Jonger eznon. Although Vampires dominate the book, there are liberal helpings of Zombies, Skeletons and Ghouls amongst others. ‘The book itself in the style ofthe previous Warhammer Army books, cighty pages long withthe middle sixteen in colour plates. They wl be atthe gots hfore dawn CCaptaln Oxo Ralvich after the defeat ofthe Erengrad army Dreams, omens and prophectes are reasonably common device in iteratre, ‘especialy fantasy and mythical stores. However, in roleplaying games they fae rather more abused and generally disregarded. Publised scenarios are ‘sualy designed to be played straight through and thus any dream or omen tends to have an affect n the immediate future, Thus a vision warning of a merchant who will eray you atthe erss-oads, immediately sets alarm bells Finging when you met him two hours later. However, in campaign play so much more can be made ofthese events. Indeed, the Old World has a god (Mom, who isastocated with dreams, This article looks o gv some ideas on how dreams and prophesies canbe incorporated into campaigns as potent but uelible Forces. “Throughout the antic | use the word vision to covers dreams, omens and vision. Mostof the comments apply toal these events, Simply though, dreams srehod when the characte iasleep and they may be misrememered ox partly forgotten. They ate seen asthe least significant of all hese events. However, reams may also be seen asa vision or omen, thus becoming important. A ‘waking vision is seen as very significant and usally involvesasight ofa future event or words of warning from 2 Sain, old fiend, et. An omen is more ‘vague, and sas likely tobe a eal event given portentous meaning. This could ‘be comets, an eclipse, artval ofthe characters at a remote village, birth of ‘three-legged chicken ee ‘An important benefit of campaign play is that events canbe planned with, plats stretched out over many weeks oF months, Thus preparation becomes Important, PCs in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay ae unigue individuals, blessed with ate points, perhaps set aside bythe gods for some legendary task. Hence itis not too much ofa step to have them guided by the gods, no matter how sub their influence. However, gods being go, their ations don't have to rake sense. Therefore dreams are clouded insymbolism, granted years before they are relevant or perhaps completly misleading. Afterall, doesthe god who grants the PC hs dream have their interests at heat or his own? Let us take as an example the dream of the merchant's betrayal. A PC awakens suddenly in the mile of the night, sweating fom the horror ofthe dream. He emembersa merchant betraying him, acrssroads ands death at thehands ofhooded men, However, the relevance ofthe dream may not become significant unt many sessions later when the characters years older. In this way iis open to mach more interpretation, Was the betrayer a merchant? Someone disguised asa merchant? A merchant disguised as someone else? Even more simply, which merchant coud itbe? Does the crossroads represent a physical croseead, ain named the crossroads ora stage ofthe characters Tife?_Does the character ignare the dream or worry about is signtieance and thus perhaps useittohisadvantage. Ofcourse when the dream is given othe character the GM mighthave ome idea ofits mesning or mone stall, wating to fd something later o ignoring it. The relevance of dreams and omens is going to depend on your style of campaign, Granting them needs abitof forethought. IF the characters pay Tip service othe gos, then it won't be so effective. Ofcourse, the importance of ‘8 vision will depend on who isreceivng it A Clerc of Sigmar who receives a 6 Vision ofadvaror comet wil give ita much greater significance han ahalling. How they eat to itis ofcourse another matter. Of course ifthe vision warned ofimpending doom. then the Cleric smore likely tobe taken seriously. Granting the same dream or vision toa group of characters isa very effective way oF teting ther to do something Bat it must not be overused. Also, be wary of placing too much significance in a vision. You don't want to tell them the Solution to & scenario only to hve them forget when it comes tothe eruneh, ‘They should suffer fo it but the scenario should not sind toa ha, Aematively dream can remind characters of a clue they have missed or forgotten (Once you have decided to grant your characte a vision you need to decide nthe frm itwilltake, Whatever you chose it should be full oF symbolism and ‘open to interpretation. Wien you grant a PC a vision tak them aside and describe wha they see and hear bu don’tallow them to write anything down or ask you to repeat what you have said (although they may ask other questions. “The elements and ideas you use na dream ae dependent on what you want to get across.
