Planning and designing of tourism facilities at Buddhist monasteries located in Sank isa, U.P.
CHAPTER 1 Introduction
Sankisa (also Sankasia, Sankassa and Sankasya) is an ancient city in India. The city came into
prominence at the time of Gautama Buddha. According to a Buddhist source, it was thirty leagues
from Savatthi. Sankisa is now identified with Sankisa Basantpur on the north bank of the Ikkhumati
river (Kalinadi), between Kampil and Kannauj, twenty-three miles west of Fatehgarh, twenty-five
south of Kaimganj and forty-five north of Kannauj, in Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh state of
India.
Currently it has ruins of old monasteries and Buddhist monuments. It is rarely visited by pilgrims
since it is difficult to go to, and there are not many facilities. After a long time, Alexander
Cunningham (British) discovered the place in 1842. Eighty-seven years later Anagarika Dharmapala
(Sri Lanka) came here on spiritual quest. In 1957 Pandith Madabawita Wijesoma Thero (Sri Lanka)
came to 'Sankisa' for few years and started a Buddhist school (Wijesoma Vidyalaya) for poor people.

trains and buses run regularly. Sankisa is about 250 km and is a 4 hours 30 minutes' drive from
Kanpur Airport.
3.2 Geography
Sankisa (also Sankasia, Sankassa and Sankasya) is an ancient city in India. The city came into
prominence at the time of Gautama Buddha. Sankisa is now identified with Sankisa Basantpur on the
north bank of the Ikkhumati river now identified as Kali Nadi, between Kampil and Kannauj, west of
Fatehgarh, south of Kaimganj, north of Kannauj, in Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh state of
India. Sankisa shares its boundary with three districts Farrukhabad, Manipuri and Etah. Main stupa
of the temple and Ashoka’s pillar relics lies in Farrukhabad district but the footprints of Buddhism
temples could be seen in the nearby villages in the periphery of Sankisa lying in Manipuri.

3.3 Climate
The climate here is mild, and generally warm and temperate. In winter, there is much less rainfall in
Kushinagar than in summer. The monsoon season follows with comparatively lower temperatures.
The monsoons subside in October and temperatures rise again. The brief, mild winter starts in late
October and lasts until the last week of February. Summers are too hot with a maximum
temperature of 38 degrees Celsius and winters are cold with the lowest temperature of 10 degrees
Celsius.
Figure 1 Climate
It is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site, where Buddhists believe Gautama Buddha returned from
heaven to give teachings to his mother after his death. Most of the sights and attractions in Sankisa
are associated with Lord Buddha. Most of these sites mark the Footprints of buddha and his
teachings. Main stupa is situated in Sankisa on an earthen rampart.
The village is popular amongst archaeological and historical enthusiasts. A small temple of Maya
Devi in Sankisa reinstates the legends associated with Lord Buddha. Here, the mother of Lord
Buddha is worshipped as a goddess of fertility. Buddhist sculptures dating back to Mahayana era also
adorn the walls at the site.
The remains of Asokan Pillar at Sankisa are also worthy of a visit. The pillar with an elephant in lieu
of the usual lion is associated with the representation that Queen Mayadevi dreamt at the time of
conceiving Prince Siddhartha who later became Buddha.
The excavations by ASI (Archaeological Society of India) have also unearthed many findings of
ancient era. The site unearthed many scriptures, terracotta figurines, bronze coins and stone dishes
belonging to the Buddhist times.
Several Religious Fairs and Festivals are held every year in areas such as :
i. Buddha Purnima called the Buddha Jayanti fair celebrated for two to three days and
approximately 7,000 to 8,000 or more people come to Sankisa.
ii. Kuwar Purnima fair is also celebrated in Sankisa in memory of Buddha and approximately 5,000-
10,000 tourists come.
iii. Buddha Mahotsav celebrated in Dhamma Bihar approximately 2-3 Lakhs people are coming and
also 1000 Marriage are held on this day.
The ancient pradikshna path was used as parikrama by the Buddhist pilgrims. The concept was
replica of the Sanchi stupa, which has two paths namely one inner path and an outer path .
Following list shows the district-wise domestic and foreign tourist visiting Sankisa in past year.

tourism activities and related to lord buddha. The tourism zone is situated on the main Sankisa-
Bhogaon road. The major sites (ASI) are situated on this road.
The Buddhist viharas are located on the main Sankisa-Bhogaon road and spread among two districts:
Sankisa as well as Mainpuri.
The facilities are below minimal which is the main drawback for tourism in Sankisa.
The viharas are not well maintained and lack in basic facilities. No unity among the façade of the
Buddhist sites. The ASI site is disputed and no basic amenity available inside.
Solar lights along the footpath are fixed on one side. Absence of facilities like street furniture,
dustbins, toilets, landscaping, drinking water.

The village Sankisa Basantpur located at 40 KM away from the tehsil Farrukhabad of the district is a
sacred place for the Buddhists. Sankisa Basantpur is located 10 KM away from railway station
Pakhna on Farrukhabad Manipuri railway route. Famous Chinese traveller Huwen Tsang and other
Chinese travellers mentioned in their reports about Sankisa which is located on the remains of a
hillock.
The buddha Vihar is space where all the major fairs and festivals are conducted.

All the sites situated along the road don’t have major development or follow any Façade rhythm.
The issues arrive due to such situations. The tourist sites do not have amenities to fulfil the
population requirements or attract any new tourists.
As the part of the survey, the survey along the entry area, the team visited the district and examined
the conditions for the development of inbound tourism in the area. The tourism potential, resources
and issues affecting the growth of tourism were assessed. The consultant carried out essential
requirements near all the tourist sites of the town, transportation network, location of public
amenities and services, location of tourism infrastructure, signage plan, and broad development
control regulation (including all signage, ASI properties, phasing plan etc). Survey was done to
provide help to give a preliminary understanding of biophysical characteristics, socio -economic
features, issues, problems, threats opportunities, and concerns which are generally not derived from
the literature review. The consultant carried out essential requirements such as infrastructure
requirements surrounding areas of the sites and integrated the same to the extent possible in the
project report.
The survey covered the main Buddha Vihar area (Area along the Road on the Sankisa-Bhogaon Road,
main Sarai bazar which is the main market of Sankisa, the approach road to the city which is the
state Highway (Mohammadabad to Kaimganj) junctions, main tourist sites and the facilities
available, existing resources.
Uttar Pradesh is already a globally known and popular tourism destination which receives the greatest
number of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) and Domestic Tourist Arrivals (DTAs) each year. Most
recently, Uttar Pradesh (UP) emerged at the top position for attracting the highest number of
domestic tourists and secured third position in attracting foreign tourists with a record footfall of
nearly 47 lakhs in 2019. The tourism industry in UP has a significant contribution to the states’
economic growth. It is expected that this Policy will strengthen the existing infrastructure, will foster
infrastructure development, income, and employment generation, and increase the much -needed
availability of hotel rooms for the tourists. Uttar Pradesh has guarded India’s treasure trove of
heritage and cultural assets over the ages which attract heritage enthusiasts not just from all over the
country but across the world. Through quality upkeep and restoration of assets designed to improve
visitor experience, the state aims to increase tourism earnings and footfall with increased average
length of stay (ALS) and to encourage repeat visits.
Buddhism had major centers of influence in places such as Sarnath, where Buddha gave his first
sermon; Bodh Gaya, the site of his enlightenment; Kushinagar; Sankisa: where he gave preachings to
his mother from heaven; Shravasti; Rajgir; and Vaishali. These places are now important pilgrimage
sites for Buddhists.
Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are the most influential states in India in context to Buddhist sites due to their
historical significance and concentration of important pilgrimage destinations. The State of Uttar
Pradesh is endowed with seven important sites associated with Lord Buddha including Kushinagar,
Sankisa (Farrukhabad), Kaushambi, Ramgram (Mahrajganj) and Devdah (Mahrajganj) , Kapilvastu
(Sidharthnagar) and Shravasti.
