Task 1: P1 – What is a Personal Media Profile

Personal media profiles are ways of cataloguing your work, qualifications and interests for potential
employers or universities. It allows you to create a distinctive, professional impression of yourself before
meeting people, including your contact details to help people reach out to you. These are highly
important, as anything on the internet could be accessed by a large number of people, and it is
important to keep a formal appearance as a result.

Given the significance of these profiles, certain pieces of information are incredibly important. Having
looked through many examples of existing media profiles, examples of such key details are:

Name - As a personal media profile is made in order to showcase you, your work and your interests, it is
important to have your name included on the site. This helps establish your work as yours, essentially
enforcing yourself as a brand.

Links - Any form of contact details, such as an email address, phone number, social media links or links to
other websites (e.g., a blog) are useful, as they allow people to get in touch with you directly. This could
be beneficial for getting a job, or applying for further education.

Personal Biography - It is helpful to include information about yourself to help create a sense of who you
are, including information such as where and when you went to school and/or college, relevant subjects
for the sector you wish to work in, and general context for who you are as a person. Not only does this
humanise the person behind your work, but it makes it easier in case of interviews, as people will
already know what to expect from you.

Interests - These are good to include, as it shows other aspects of your character. For example, if you
wish to work in a creative subject, you can include uploads of any relevant work you have created
outside of employment or education to show your passion for a subject/sector. Or, if you include extra
curricular activities such as sports or groups such as Scouts/Explorers, it could suggest that you are
someone that makes the most of any opportunities you are given. It could also relate to any interested
employers, identifying you as an ideal candidate.

Skills - Including details of your skills and qualifications are important, as these would have to be given to
future employers/academic institutions at some point. It provides more detail to see if you are suitable,
as well as allowing you to show pride in your work, reflecting your personality and dedication to the
things you do. As well as being useful for establishing yourself as an ideal candidate, it also helps ensure
that you are only contacted for positions you would be suitable for, as employers can decide whether or
not you would be fit for a role based on these skills you have listed.

Images - Whether used in relation to the brand image you are creating, or to provide a visualisation of
yourself, images are beneficial in boosting the appearance of a personal media profile. Photographs of
examples of the work you have done are also great to include, showing your interests as well as your
skills. Including photos of yourself is also good in order to further humanise yourself, making you stand
out as a brand.
