Aim:

The total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products (total mass of
reactants = total mass of products)

Theory:

Wt. Required =molar concentration x molecular weight x volume in litter Wt. Mx

Na2CO3 + CaCl2

CaCO3 + H2SO4

2NaCl+CaCO 3 (ppt)

CaSO4 + (H2CO3)
N*a_{2}*C*O_{3} = 23 * 2 + 12 * 1 + 16 * 3 = 106g / m * ol CaCO 3 = 40 * 1
+12x1+3*16=100g/mol CO2 = 12 x1+16*2=44 g/mol N*a_{2}*C*O_{3} : CaCO3 :

equpment beakers erlenmeyer flasks 50 ml

Procedure:

1. weight accurately about 0.05 g of metal (4-5 cm) to nearest 0.001 g. fold

into quarters and tie with about 30 cm string.

2. Fill a 600 ml beaker with 400 ml of distilled water.

3. Clean a gas measuring tube(Eudiometer), pour about 15ml of dilute

hydrochloric acid.

4. Complete the rest of the tube with water. Insert the metal sample to a

depth of 5 cm. close the tip with a rubber connector and hold your thumb
tightly over the mouth of the tube and quickly invert the tube in the beaker

of water.

5. Observe the evolution of hydrogen gas till all the metal vanish and

measure the volume of the gas.

6. Measure the temperature of water in the beaker and read the barometric

pressure (p) on a barometer.

Data:

Mass of metal (m) 0.02. Volume of H2 (V) 24 ml

Temperature of water (T) 19+273=292 k Barometric pressure (P) 1

Temperature at STP (To) 273 k

Barometric pressure at STP (Po) 1

Calculation:

1- Calculate the volume of the gas (Vo) at STP by using the relation.

P o xV o Px V
=
To T

So,
P xV x T o
V o=
T x Po

1 x 26 x 273
V o= =24.3 ml
292 x 1
2. Calculate no. of moles by using the equation

PV =nRT

So,
PV
n=
RT

Where ,

R= 0.08206 atm.L/mol

T= 273 K

RT =22.400 L/mol = 22400 mill / mol

P = 1 atm

So,
Vo
n=( )
22400

24.3
n= =0.0010 mole
22400

3. Calculate Eq.wt of Mg by using the equation

Equivalent weight of Mg metal = 0.5 x m / n

0.02
Eq . wt Mg=0.5 x =10 g/mol
0.0010

4. Calculate mistake percentage:

Theoretical equipment weight Mg =12 g/mol

Mistake percentage = ((Theoretical value - Experimental value) / Theoretical
value) x 100%¿
12−10
x 100=16 %
12

Consulsion
Based on our experimental data we were able to determine that [10] is the
equivalent weight for [Mg] metal. This information can be used in future
experiments involving this particular element or compound containing it.
