A small fraction of people proposes that the most effective method to lower
the criminal rate is by establishing a larger number of detaining cells.
However, from the writer’s perspective, I object this suggestion.
In this day and age, crime rate all over the world is increasing exponentially.
To combat this problem, some people propose that governments should build
more prisons. In my opinion, construction of more detaining cells will not
solve the problem.
In the era of industrial revolution, it is a common belief that the crime rate
increases comparatively and people think that building additional prisons is
the most effective way to reduce crimes. As far as I am concerned, this is not
the solution because of the following reasons.
To start with, it is common knowledge that prisons are being used to punish
criminals, not to reduce them (TS1). While building more prisons can help
the government jail more people, it will not be useful in deterring people
from committing crimes (KEY POINT). Researches conducted from multiple
organizations showed that the US ranked first in both the amount of prisons
built and the amount of inmates, which proves that prisons are not the
solution to reduce crime (EXAMPLE).
To begin with, constructing more prisons will have no effect on criminal rate.
As far as I am concerned, the law existed as a warning and a threat to those
who had a willing to commit a crime (KEY POINT). Hence, the fear of
getting punished is the key to reduce the number of criminals (RESULT).
However, a larger number of cells does not apply a heavy enough pressure to
be afraid of (CONTRAST). Moreover, there are other methods which were
proven to be successful, such as passing through a stricter law by putting a
heavier fine or sending law enforces to roam the street
(REINFORCEMENT).
Secondly, constructing more prisons will put a huge strain on the
government’s budget. It is expensive to build prisons from scratch and it
costs a lot to maintain from hiring people to keep the security. The budget for
building prisons can be used for other activities that can be more helpful in
reducing crimes. For example, instead of constructing detaining cells, the
government can put the budget on educating people of the fact of crimes and
helping people who are most vulnerable to re-committing crimes.
