Overview
An extensive coverage of health and safety into

workshop practice, focusing on hazards control,

safety precautions, and industrial hygiene, to

develop a responsible awareness of hazards.

I- Safety

It is the state of being "safe", i.e.

Protected against physical, and the other
consequences of failure, damage, error or
accidents.

It is also defined as the control of the

recognized hazards to define an acceptable level
of risk.
II- Safety Standers In Labs and Workshops
Associations issuing the safety laboratory standards :
1- International Standardization Organization (ISO)
2- International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA)
3- American Society of Testing of Materials (ASTM)
4- International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
5- British Standards Institution (BSI)
6- Laser Institute of America (LIA)
7- Standards Australia (SAI)
8- American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA).
Application fields:

1- Clinics
2- Labs
3- Workshops
4- Educational facilities.
III. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

Eye and Face Protection (vision, hearing, respiratory)

III. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

2. Head Protection

3.Foot Protection
III. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

4. Hand protection

5. Ear protection
IV- Safety Managements
Employers are responsible for:
1. Identifying hazards in the work place “hazard assessment”.
2. Identifying and providing Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) for employees.
3. Training employees in the use and care of the PPE.
4. Maintaining PPE, including replacing worn or damaged
parts.
5. Periodically reviewing, updating and evaluating
the effectiveness of the PPE program.
IV- Safety Managements (cont.)

Employers are responsible for:

6. Assign supervisors for:
a) Training personnel on proper wear, use, clean, maintain,
care and store of PPE.

b) Report the need to repair or replace PPE.

VI-Safety notes in the workshop
1.Always listen carefully to the teacher and follow instructions.
2. Do not run in the workshop, you could ‘bump’ into another
pupil and cause an accident.
3. Know where the emergency stop buttons are positioned in
the workshop. If you see an accident at the other side of the
workshop you can use the emergency stop button to turn off all
electrical power to machines.
4.Always wear an apron as it will protect your clothes and hold
lose clothing such as ties in place.
5. Wear good strong shoes (training shoes are not suitable).
VI-Safety notes in the workshop (cont.)
6. When attempting practical work all tools should be put
away.
7. Bags should not be brought into a workshop as people can
trip over them.
8. When learning how to use a machine, listen very carefully
to all the instructions given by the teacher.
9. Do not use a machine if you have not been shown how to
operate it safely by the teacher
10. Always be patient, never rush in the workshop.
VI-Safety notes in the workshop (cont.)

11. Always use a guard when working on a machine.

12. Keep hands away from moving/rotating machinery.

13. Use hand tools carefully, keeping both hands behind the

cutting edge.

14. Report any damage to machines/equipment as this could

cause an accident.
